  1. Sword and Shield
  2. Low Rank
  3.
  4. Sword and Shield is an extremely versatile weapon. It touts high mobility, and reasonable defense. You can guard, and use items while your weapon is unsheathed. You also have the
  5. ability to KO monsters with shield bash attacks.
  6.
  7. Sword and Shield attacks quickly, and benefits heavily from elemental damage. You’ll want to exploit elemental weaknesses as much as possible. Ideally, this means building one of every type of elemental sword and shield, and I’ll provide the options. In practice, you can get by with just Tobi-Kadachi’s thunder element as it’s decent against everything.
  8.
  9. The short answer is:
  10.
  11. Build the Jagras Sword and Shield to bridge you to the Pukei-Pukei, and then Tobi Kadachi Path, which will be adequate to take you to Nergigante and then you can pickup his Sword and Shield.
  12.
  13. Now for the long answer:
  14.
  15. The Hunter’s Knife 1 you start with is good for the first missions but you’ll want to build the bone path as soon as possible.
  16.
  17. Make a Bone Kukri 1, and upgrade it to a Bone Kukri 2 by using 3 Monster Bone S.
  18.
  19. You’ll use this to take on the Great Jagras
  20.
  21. After your victory, immediately upgrade your Bone Kukri 2, into a Jagras Edge 1 by using 1 Great Jagras Claw, 1 Great Jagras Hide, 3 Great Jagras Scale, and 1 Sharp Claw. You can get sharp claws from regular old Jagras.
  22.
  23. Use this to hunt Kulu-Ya Ku, and Pukei Pukei.
  24.
  25. There’s an optional side grade you can make here. It’s useful to pickup as it adds poison to your weapon, at the cost of a slight damage decrease.  You can skip it if you didn’t get the required materials from Pukei-Pukei.
  26.
  27. Upgrade your original Hunter’s Knife 1 into a Hunter’s Knife 2 by using 2 Iron Ore. Then Upgrade it to a Blooming Knife 1 by using 2 Pukei-Pukei Quill, 3 Pukei-Pukei Scale, and 1 Poison Sac.
  28.
  29. Once you unlock Wildespire wastes, hunt Barroth.
  30.
  31. Barroth has a side-grade you can take, that will bridge into one of the two fire elemental Sword and Shields. Build a new Bone Kukri 1, and upgrade it to a Bone Kukri 2 by using 3 Monster Bone S. Then upgrade it to a Carapace Edge 1 by using 1 Barroth Claw, 3 Barroth Shell, and 2 Barroth Ridge.
  32.
  33. Take out Jyuratodus. There’s another sword you can make here. You can make an Aqua Messer 1 by making a Hunter’s Knife 1, and upgrading it to a Hunter’s Knife 2 by using 3 Iron Ore. Then upgrade it to an Aqua Messer 1 by using 3 Earth Crystal, 1 Jyuratodus Shell, 3 Jyuratodus Scale, and 1 Aqua Sac.
  34.
  35. The Jagras, Pukei-Pukei, Barroth and Jyuratodus Sword and Shields are all extremely close shot for shot. The Pukei-Pukei is probably still preferred because of the Poison application, and Brute Wyverns like Barroth, and Anjanath are usually very susceptible to poison. Your next hunts are against Tobi-Kadachi, and Anjanath both of which are susceptible to water, and poison, so use the Pukei-Pukei or Jyuratodus Swords.
  36.
  37. Continue with your mandatory story hunt of Tobi-Kadachi. Save the materials, you won’t be able to build the Thunder Elemental Sword and Shield until you’ve gotten to the Coral Highlands.
  38.
  39.  Hunt Anjanath, and do your best to break it’s face by using your shield bashing attacks.
  40.
  41. Now, upgrade your Carapace Edge 1, into a Blazing Edge 1 by using 2 Anjanath Fang, 3 Anjanath Scale, and 1 Flame Sac.
  42.
  43. Equip it, the added fire damage will surpass the ability to poison monsters from now on and it’s insane raw will be a huge boost. If you miss poison, you can always give a poison weapon to your pallico.
  44.
  45. Afterwards it’s Zorah Magdaros…. Setpeice… etc.
  46.
  47. In the Coral Highlands, you’re forced into an expedition to explore.
  48.
  49. Gather bone piles for Sturdy Bones. After you gather some, upgrade your Jagras Edge 1, into a Thunder Edge 1 by using 5 Sturdy Bone, 1 Tobi-Kadachi Electrode, 2 Tobi-Kadachi Claw, and 1 Electro Sac.
  50.
  51. You’ll be wanting to switch weapons based on elemental weaknesses from now on. In general, thunder is always a safe bet, but your next hunt is a Paolumu, who is weak to fire, so hang onto the Blazing Edge 1.
  52.
  53. Then you’ll descend into the Rotten Vale, and take out Radobaan. Radobaan isn’t weak to anything you have, use your preference.
  54.
  55. Then you’ll have to take on Legiana. Legiana is weakest to Thunder, but is also moderately weak to fire. The damage on Blazing Edge 1 and Thunder Edge 1 will be comparable.
  56.
  57. After Legiana you’ll hopefully get 2 Monster Bone+. Use them to upgrade your Thunder Edge 1, into a Thunder Edge 2 by using 2 Monster Bone+, 2 Tobi-Kadachi Electrode, 2 Tobi-Kadachi Membrance, and 2 Warped Bone. Warped Bones can be found from bone piles in the rotten vale.
  58.
  59. Use this for the remainder of low rank, as the rest of the monster’s are immune to fire, and quite weak to Thunder.
  60.
  61. If you’re feeling up to it, you can also build Legiana’s Ice Elemental Sword and Shield.
  62.
  63. Build another Hunter’s Knife 1 and upgrade it to Hunter’s Knife 2 by using 3 Iron Ore. Upgrade this to an Aqua Messer 1 by using 3 Earth Crystal, 1 Jyuratodus Shell, 3 Jyuratodus Scale, and 1 Aqua Sac. Then upgrade it again to an Aqua Messer 2 by using 5 Dragonite Ore, 3 Jyuratodus Fin, 2 Jyuratodus Fang, and 3 Gajau Skin . From there, upgrade it down the Legiana Path to Glacial Grace 1 by using 3 Legiana Claw, 4 Legiana Scale, and 2 Frost Sac.
  64.
  65. Hunt Odogaron, followed by Rathalos and Diablos.
  66.
  67. If you built Glacial Grace 1, use it on Odogaron and Diablos, otherwise, Thunder Edge 2 will be more than adequate. Rathalos is weak to Thunder, so use the Thunder Edge 2 regardless.
  68.
  69. After Rathalos, and receiving a Rathalos Marrow, you can upgrade your Blazing Edge 1, into a Blazing Edge 2 by using 1 Rathalos Marrow, 4 Anjanath Fang, 1 Anjanath Nosebone, and 1 Anjanath Tail.
  70.
  71. After beating the Zora Magdaros setpeice, and killing a deceptively strong Pukei-Pukei, you’ll gain access to High Rank quests. Congratulations, the baby gloves are coming off.
  72.
  73. High Rank
  74.
  75. Our immediate goal in High Rank is a weapon upgrade to compensate for the increased health of monsters, with a long term goal of bringing our sharpness to the next level.
  76.
  77. You have a lot of options once you hit High Rank with Sword and Shield.
  78.
  79. You’ll want to upgrade your three elemental swords by farming the high rank versions of those monsters. Start with Tobi Kadachi.
  80.
  81. Upgrade your Thunder Edge 2 into a Lightning Nemesis 1 by using 5 Quality Bone, 4 Tobi Kadachi Scale+, 3 Tobi-Kadchi Pelt+, and 3 Vespoid Innerwing. Quality bones are rewards from early high rank monsters, and vespoid wings can be carved from vespoids, which are the wasp enemies that will occasionally harass you.
  82.
  83. In no particular order, you can hunt Anjanath, and Paolumu to upgrade your Fire and Ice Sword and Shields.
  84. Upgrade your Blazing Edge 2 into a Flammensucher by using 4 Anjanath Fang+, 5 Anjanath Scale+, 3 Inferno Sac, and 1 Anjanath Plate.
  85.
  86. Next, hunt Paolumu for webbings, use your new Flammensucher because it’s weak to fire.
  87.
  88. Upgrade your Glacial Grace 1, into a Glacial Grace 2 by using 4 Paolumu Wing, 4 Legiana Claw, 3 Legiana Tail Webbing, and 1 Legiana Plate. These are all low rank Legiana materials, but high rank paolumu materials.
  89.
  90. The plates can be annoying to get, which is part of why the Tobi-Kadachi path is considered the main weapon as it’s simply easier to build.
  91.
  92. You can now optionally hunt Legiana in high rank to upgrade your Glacial Grace 2 into a Rimespire. Use 3 Legiana Claw+, 5 Legiana Scale+, 3 Legiana Wing and 2 Freezer Sac.
  93.
  94. You’ll have to hunt a Pink Rathian now as part of standard progression.
  95.
  96. It’s going to be a toss up what’s better. Pink Rathian is weakest to thunder, but the Lightning Nemesis 1 doesn’t have blue sharpness. The Flammensucher would be good, but Pink Rathian is immune to Fire reducing it’s damage output.
  97.
  98. Whatever you choose, hunt Pink Rathian, and use the monster hardbones you get to upgrade your Lightning Nemesis 1 into a Lightning Nemesis 2 by using 3 Monster Hardbone, 2 Tobi-Kadachi Electrode+, 4 Tobi-Kadachi Membrane, and 3 Thunder Sac.
  99.
  100. Your next mandatory hunt is going to be Nergigante. Any of these weapons will be viable, but Nergigante is weakest to thunder element so the Lightning Nemesis 2 is the preference.
  101.
  102. If after your hunt, you got enough Elder Dragon Bones you can upgrade your Lightning Nemesis 2 into a Lightning Nemesis 3 by using 4 Elder Dragon Bone, 4 Tobi-Kadachi Electrode+, 6 Tobi-Kadachi Claw+, and 1 Wyvern Gem. The wyvern gem can be found as carves or rewards from monsters like Barroth, Jyuratodus or Radobaan.
  103.
  104. Of course, Nergigante’s Sword and Shield is extremely powerful, so you should focus your efforts on that. Go through the Ore Tree by making a Hunter’s Knife 1, into a Hunter’s Knife 2, into a Hunter’s Knife 3, into a Steel Knife 1, into a Steel Knife 2, into a Steel Knife 3, into a Chrome Slicer 1.
  105.
  106. Then upgrade your Chrome Slicer 1 into a Nergal Jack by using 3 Nergigante Talon, 4 Nergigante Regrwoth Plate, 2 Nergigante Tail, and 2 Nergigante Carapace.
  107.
  108.
  109. Congratulations, you now have a weapon that’s completely capable of getting you through the rest of the game, and one of the best Sword and Shields.
  110.
  111. This will be adequate for taking out the remaining Elder Dragons as a baseline.
  112.
  113. For final targets, after beating Teostra, you can finish upgrading the Flammensucher into a Gnashing Flammensucher by using 2 Teostra Mane, 6 Anjanath Fang+, 2 Anjanath Nosebone+ and 1 Anjanath Gem.
  114.
  115. You can also finish upgrading your Rimespire into a Legia Rimespire after beating Kushala Dao-ra by using 2 Daora Claw+, 5 Legiana Claw+ 3 Legiana Hide+ and 1 Legiana Gem.
  116.
  117. You can also build Teostra’s Blast Element Sword and Shield. It offers Blast Element which is alright, but Nergal Jack will be better over all.
  118.
  119.
  120. Kushala Daora is weakest to thunder, so the Lightning Nemesis 3 is preferred.
  121. Teostra is weakest to Ice, so the Legia Rimespire is a good choice, but
  122. Vaal Hazak is weakest to fire OR dragon, so use the Nergal Jack as it doesn’t have the Flammensucher’s -20% affinity.
  123.
  124. After taking out Xeno’jiva, you can upgrade the Nergal Jack one more time into Eradication Vanguard  by using 2 Xeno’Jiva horns, 5 Nergigante Horn+, 5 Nergigante Talons, and 1 Nergigante Gem.
  125.
  126. The Gems will make these difficult. If you go for one Sword and Shield, go for Eradication Vanguard because of it’s high raw, good blue sharpness, and reasonable dragon element. It will serve as a great general purpose weapon
