  14. History: A historically reclusive but proud nation, Vento Aureo has generally kept to its own vast expanses of general nothingness for centuries. It is bordered to the west and north by open sea, to the east by vast plains and to the south arid deserts. Its capital city is named Burando, and it sits on the peninsula jutting out from the mainland, a bastion of greatness, made near entirely from the marble of Vento Aureo. The great fortress of Dagarand was created, a citadel upon a naked hill, a grand castle to defend the peninsula and the city of Burando in the case of attack from land.

  16. Centuries ago they were part of a larger Empire, however as time went on, the Empire split, and the people of Aureo, as it was simply known then, were led by their ruler, one Theó Blackthorn, out across the water to the great grasslands. It was there that they found large expanses of arable land and herdable livestock. They founded the city of Burando, and under King Theó Blackthorn, created the Kingdom of Vento Aureo.

  18. Military service in Vento Aureo is highly looked upon, as the greatest fighters and warriors are rewarded richly by the Royal Family in person. They are led by the Princes of the Realm, members of the Royal Family, known as Marshals. The eldest male heir is known as the First Marshal, with the rest being numbered after him. Men not of the Royal Family can attain Marshalship, however, they can never achieve a higher rank than Fourth Marshal. The military is mostly composed of a standing army of light and heavy infantry, with light cavalry in the form of Vento Aureo Cavallerizzo being present. The men of the army are organised into ‘eserciti’ of three thousand men each, broken into units of 100 men called ‘secoli’.

  20. The light infantry wears a form of segmented metal strips fastened to internal leather strips, over a cloth tunic, called ‘corazza segmentati’. They wear helmets with a rear guard to protect from blows to the neck, with a protrusion on the front about 3” above the rim to protect the face from sword blows. They use a light sword designed for stabbing so as not to interfere with the ‘scudo luce’, the rectangular and semi-cylindrical shield they bore on their left arms. The shield is relatively thin, but light, designed more to protect from thrusts from shortswords and defend from arrows than to block any meaningful blow. They also bear two ‘giavellotto’, 2m long javelins, designed to bend and break apart on impact.

  22. The heavy infantry is quite apart from the light infantry. While the light infantry clears the way with their ‘giavellotto’, the ‘uomini d'acciaio’, men of steel, march forth. They are equipped with plate armour, reinforced by mail. The pauldrons and faulds are made of bands instead of solid plates for better flexibility, a full hauberk sitting beneath their plate. The skirts on everyone cover their thighs, leg protection is mostly mail chausses, supplemented by greaves on the shins. The plate is cared for and tempered to a shine. Their shields are universally rectangular with curved tops and bottoms; thicker and heavier variants of the light infantry 'scudo luce', tall tower shields. They are trained to use spears, swords and bows, however, due to the weight of the armour they are instructed to choose between the weapons in a war. Those who choose to use a bow are given numerous arrows, as well as their own personal bow, as well as the light stabbing sword of the infantry if they are forced into close combat. Those who lose or break their bow are forced to either find a new one amongst the corpses of the dead or join the swordsmen on the front lines. The spearmen are given a two-handed 8’ weapons, designed to let a small number of men hold small defensive positions with relative ease against a numerically superior foe. They are also handed a thrusting sword in case they lose or break their spear. The swordsmen are given the heavy variant of the ‘scudo luce’, as well as proper longswords with which to slash and cut through the enemy.

  24. Vento Aureo hasn’t much of an offensive navy, however, they enough ships to protect their coastlines effectively, with a focus on galleys manned by slaves and light infantry.
  25. The cavalry comes in the form of the relatively small fighting core of the Cavallerizzo, horsemen from the plains in the east of the Kingdom, highly trained horsemen that form a bond with their horses from a young age, starting to ride and fight at the age of seven. They are light, emphasising speed and agility, using spears, shields and swords, as well as horseback archery. They favour a lamellar cuirass, padded with a soft undergarment over a mail hauberk, to stop the piercing of arrows and deflect the strike of swords. They are known as the Golden Wind of the West, and it is them that will bear Vento Aureo into a brighter future.
