49. In a twisted social experiment, eighty Americans are locked in their high-rise corporate office in Bogotá, Colombia, and ordered by an unknown voice coming from the company's intercom system to participate in a deadly game of kill or be killed.
 50. Overall a highly enjoyable film that I would definitely recommend to a friend. Apart from offering some great pieces of gory violence, which I very much love, and keeping me on edge the whole time, it was thought provoking as well. That is, in this movie, the bad guys are the people conducting the experiment, but not any one of the Belko employees. Even if I was supporting Mike Milch all along, I don't know for sure if I would act like him or Barry Norris, in a similar situation. The film really made me think at which point do people break and survival instincts dominate over the -until recently thought to be deep founded- code of ethics. For Barry it was when the first people got killed and understood his life was at risk. For Mike it was after witnessing his girlfriend's death, when his spirit was completely crushed. To be honest, I don't know which one am I. I am looking forward to a sequel, if there is one.

Things I would change: the only thing I would change in the movie would be to have Mike flip the switch for his own head bomb after he kills all those guys. That would have been a perfect 10 for me.
 51. The Belko Experiment (2016)

*** (out of 4)

Eighty employees of the Belko company are at work doing their job when all of the sudden a voice comes over the intercom system telling them that before long most of them will be dead. The people are trapped inside the building where they play a game where it's pretty much you have to kill people are get killed yourself.

James Gunn wrote the screenplay to this film and Greg McLean (WOLF CREEK) brought it to the screen. I'm going to say that I enjoyed the film but there's no question that it could have been even better with a few changes to the story. As it stands, THE BELKO EXPERIMENT has a very good story but I think a more political spin would have been better. I think more of a "thinking man's movie" would have helped as well as there are certainly some interesting questions that are asked but the potential is just never fully dug into.

What does work is what will turn off the majority of the mainstream and that's the fact that this is an ultra-violent and downright nasty little film at times. I mean, isn't it rather hilarious that a few decades ago something like SCREAM was getting a NC-17 rating and now you've got something like this, which features heads exploding and countless scenes of some sadistic violence? The movie is certainly a violent blood-bath so fans of that type of thing are going to love it. If you're squeamish then it's best to get ready to turn your head quite often.

Another thing that works are the actors. I thought there were some very good performances throughout the film and especially by the familiar faces like Tony Goldwyn, Michael Rooker and John C. McGinley. You've also got John Gallagher, Jr. and Adria Arjona who turn in fine performances. I really wish the screenplay had dealt with the characters a bit more and given us an even harder look at the social questions that are asked. There's a sequence where a group of people are selected to be executed and they base this on whether they have children or their age. It's moments like this where the story fully comes to life and it's too bad there weren't more scenes like this.

McLeon does a nice job with the story and he certainly keeps the film moving at a nice pace but I do wish that there was a more claustrophobic feel to everything. As it stands, THE BELKO EXPERIMENT has a lot of flaws but at the same time there's enough here for horror fans to enjoy.
 52. The Belko Experiment is a grisly, sick-making exercise in sadism that tries to camouflage its base venality in a thought-experiment plot.
