  2. I Have Seen

  5. I have seen
  6.
  7. Shrapnel flying through the air
  8. As my friends run for cover,
  9. Me among them.
  10.
  11. I have heard
  12.
  13. The sound of bombs, of gunshots
  14. Cries of terror of the frightened, the fallen
  15. Wailing sobs of those who mourn.
  16.
  17. I have seen
  18.
  19. The darkness of the night
  20. Lingering over a stormy ocean
  21. With only a single boat sitting there
  22. As I make my way across the harbor.
  23.
  24. I have heard
  25.
  26. Only eerie silence of escape
  27. Stifled tears of my companions,
  28. Wondering whether we will live.
  29.
  30. I have felt
  31.
  32. The dismay of seeing neverending sea,
  33. Fear for my life, for others
  34. A want to be only back home.
  35.
  36. The horror of gunshots raining down
  37. Anxiety and worry as I pretend to be dead
  38. While others are not pretending.
  39.
  40. I have heard
  41.
  42. My classmate cry out in pain,
  43. Begging for water from his father
  44. To sooth his bleeding eye.
  45.
  46. His father replied to him,
  47. "Be ready son, for when you die
  48. I shall toss you into the ocean."
  49.
  50. I have seen
  51.
  52. A refugee camp, on land
  53. Where my legs are still unsteady on solid ground
  54. But where I can rest and eat
  55. And where I shall for two years to come.
  56.
  57. I have felt
  58.
  59. The uneasiness of an airplane
  60. But hope that I can at least
  61. Come to a new world, a new life
  62. And I pray for those left behind
  63. In this time of war.
  64.
  65. I have seen
  66.
  67. Year after year pass by,
  68. And I am a new person.
  69. I have been given countless opportunities
  70. Food when I am hungry, a home to come to
  71. Education so I am as equal as anyone
  72. Here in this 'Nuoc My'.
  73.
  74. I have been given a family,
  75. People to come home to and laugh with,
  76. To share our troubles.
  77.
  78. Oh, I have heard, I have felt
  79.
  80. I have seen
  81.
  82. Through my mother's eyes.
  83.
  84.
  85.
  86.
  87.

  93. They told me they were bad
  94. This much I know is true,
  95. For all the Commie wants
  96. Is the same for me and you.
  97.
  98. Oh I know this sounds good
  99. And I know how it could,
  100. But you’ve got to realize
  101. That it’s through a compromise.
  102.
  103. For all shall be the same
  104. As the revolution came,
  105. An image that was buttered
  106. A reality that fluttered.
  107.
  108. No more consumer goods,
  109. No more hoodies with them hoods.
  110. Why would you want a car
  111. When you can walk to the bar.
  112.
  113. A heel for a toe,
  114. For no one cares,
  115. This is the burden
  116. That this system bares.
  117.
  118. Perhaps it was the storming
  119. That made the trouble forming,
  120. For quotes must be met
  121. Or you’ll fall into debt
  122.
  123. For every women and man
  124. They truly had a plan,
  125. In a box they’ll live
  126. 60 feet is what they give.
  127.
  128. Now if you want to get ahead
  129. Join the commie party stead,
  130. For then you’ll really go far
  131. And actually get to drive a car.
  132.
  133. Now a cold war must be fought
  134. So they can show us what they’ve got,
  135. But when it was completely done
  136. It truly was the West that “won”.
