- I Have Seen

- I have seen
- Shrapnel flying through the air
- As my friends run for cover,
- Me among them.
- I have heard
- The sound of bombs, of gunshots
- Cries of terror of the frightened, the fallen
- Wailing sobs of those who mourn.
- I have seen
- The darkness of the night
- Lingering over a stormy ocean
- With only a single boat sitting there
- As I make my way across the harbor.
- I have heard
- Only eerie silence of escape
- Stifled tears of my companions,
- Wondering whether we will live.
- I have felt
- The dismay of seeing neverending sea,
- Fear for my life, for others
- A want to be only back home.
- The horror of gunshots raining down
- Anxiety and worry as I pretend to be dead
- While others are not pretending.
- I have heard
- My classmate cry out in pain,
- Begging for water from his father
- To sooth his bleeding eye.
- His father replied to him,
- "Be ready son, for when you die
- I shall toss you into the ocean."
- I have seen
- A refugee camp, on land
- Where my legs are still unsteady on solid ground
- But where I can rest and eat
- And where I shall for two years to come.
- I have felt
- The uneasiness of an airplane
- But hope that I can at least
- Come to a new world, a new life
- And I pray for those left behind
- In this time of war.
- I have seen
- Year after year pass by,
- And I am a new person.
- I have been given countless opportunities
- Food when I am hungry, a home to come to
- Education so I am as equal as anyone
- Here in this 'Nuoc My'.
- I have been given a family,
- People to come home to and laugh with,
- To share our troubles.
- Oh, I have heard, I have felt
- I have seen
- Through my mother's eyes.

- Communism In a Poem

- They told me they were bad
- This much I know is true,
- For all the Commie wants
- Is the same for me and you.
- Oh I know this sounds good
- And I know how it could,
- But you’ve got to realize
- That it’s through a compromise.
- For all shall be the same
- As the revolution came,
- An image that was buttered
- A reality that fluttered.
- No more consumer goods,
- No more hoodies with them hoods.
- Why would you want a car
- When you can walk to the bar.
- A heel for a toe,
- For no one cares,
- This is the burden
- That this system bares.
- Perhaps it was the storming
- That made the trouble forming,
- For quotes must be met
- Or you’ll fall into debt
- For every women and man
- They truly had a plan,
- In a box they’ll live
- 60 feet is what they give.
- Now if you want to get ahead
- Join the commie party stead,
- For then you’ll really go far
- And actually get to drive a car.
- Now a cold war must be fought
- So they can show us what they’ve got,
- But when it was completely done
- It truly was the West that “won”.
