Through his actions, the God of Death Thanatos has created an alternate timeline known as the Divergent Universe, a breach in time where the natural flow of time established by the gods has been disrupted. This discontuinity acts as a choke point in the flow of time, preventing any other possible outcomes from ever existing. The only way to stop it is to destroy the source of the divergence; Thanatos must be defeated and the influence of the gods must be restored. While Thanatos does have control over the divergent universe, he is not omniscient: players can use the temporal breach to travel back and forth between time and liberate the world of the future.
