- The Krukkiz are a small race who originated on a Tirrimm, a planet with incredible gravity and frequent techtonic activity. Most creatures on Tirrimm live close to the ground, with sure footing and armored plates; the Krukkiz evolved in dangerous caves, and found success scaling the walls to plunge down into their prey in imitation of falling stalactites.
- The Krukkiz have thick skin, though they do not possess the armor plating other species on Tirrimm do. They possess six thick-boned limbs, and four more flexible boneless limbs. Of their thick limbs, four are designed for scaling cave walls and latching onto stalactites, while two are designed as living lances, able to withstand enormous impact and pierce scales and flesh. Their boneless limbs, two by its face and one by its behind, are able to retract and hide themselves underneath ridges on their beaks.
- Krukkiz ancestors were driven from their caves by rising volcanic activity in their homeland. They adapted to surface life, becoming tree-climbers instead of cave-climbers; as their lances were more than sufficient to ambush surface prey, their evolutionary path began to shift. Their grooming limbs proved excellent at manipulating vegetation, and the species moved towards fine manipulation to be able to coax sap from trees and supplement their carnivorous lifestyle. They became more omnivorous, but, more importantly, this experimentation also rewarded intelligence. Early Krukkiz began to use tools, adapting their ambush tactics to include crude traps in order to lure prey, and their boneless limbs became stronger as they applied them to this sort of work. So, too, did their sentience emerge.
- Very few relics of early Krukkiz life remain, because their first shelters were tree-houses, with leaves woven together to serve as a roof and branches coaxed together as well. They never truly came down from the trees; vines and leaves were the ideal materials for a race with fine dexterity but litttle leveraging strength. As time went on, they were able to develop tools to make up for their weakness; boneless bracers, for instance, which wrapped about the limb and gave an artifical stiffness to it. They did little work with stone in their early days, using their lance-limbs when they might need something sharp or impactful. The first permanent Krukkiz structures were made of clay, shaped while wet and pliant and left to dry into something far more fearsome than a tree.
- They did, eventually, discover the art of stone and iron; but it was rather far along their progress as a sentient species. Metals, for them, were used in creating greater tools; why make a sword when you already have two? And the tools they used to be able to mine were just one example of the mechanations invented by Krukkiz to augment themselves. They had considerable strength in their legs and their lances, and relatively less in their boneless limbs; but their boned limbs could not make the fine movements required of tools, while their boneless limbs could. Eventually, these tools came to their logical conclusion of mechanical suits which were stronger than both of those things.
- Today, the image of the Krukkiz in the mech comes naturally to many in the Coalition. Some of them operate all-engulfing mechanisms, while others simply wear mechanised limbs which they can manipulate with many fine controls. Of course, at about a foot long - about the size of a modest cat - they probably need the boost; while they can scale doors to turn knobs or scale tables to sit in on a meeting due to their origins, they're still very small.
- - these days, their lances are mostly decorative; bright colours serve to try and attract a partner
- - when their eye-stalks retreat, the squooshy thing there can still see light; that's probably because the things they hunted were bioluminescent
- - they have incredibly sicknasty claws on their feet and they probably feel like a koala if they climb up you; they can probably wear little socks to offset that, but why would they want to, climbing is important
- - gotta work out how/if clothes work with them
- - their versions of chairs are probably, like, stalagmite-like structures they can latch onto
- - their butt beak protects their sexual organs; they probably lay eggs or somethin
- - how did they get in touch with aliens??? i feel like another species probably made contact with them rather than them going out into space and finding aliens themselves
