- Listening Practice - ETS Guide test 2, first set
- Submit your answers when you finish.
- ---
- Writing Section: Fourth and final section of the test; 2 tasks; about 55 minutes total
- 1 integrated: 3 minutes to read a text, listen to a lecture, 20 minutes to write about how the lecture relates to the text
- 2 independent: 30 minutes to write a short essay to answer a choice question
- ---
- Two types of choice question are possible for writing:
- - agree/disagree: “Do you agree or disagree with the following statement?”
- - some/other: “Some people prefer…. Others think…. Which do you believe is better?”
- ---
- “Typically, an effective response has a minimum of 300 words.”
- - It’s not a strict minimum, but if you’re much below 300 you probably need more development of your points to get a 5.
- ---
- Timing:
- 3-5 minutes: prewriting
- - brainstorm reasons to support both choices, and think of some examples to support each reason
- - choose the option that you have better reasons and examples for
- - write a short outline to remember the order that you’ll explain the reasons
- <1 minute: thesis statement
- - write your own opinion in one sentence (which will be part of the introduction paragraph later)
- 5 minutes each (or 7 if you only have two): body paragraphs
- - Force yourself to move to the next paragraph after 5 minutes, even if you’re not finished
- - Include one reason for your opinion.
- - Include details and examples to show that the reason is true and that it supports your opinion.
- <1 minute: conclusion statement
- - Write a one-sentence summary of your opinion and the reasons you just explained
- ---
- BREAK
- ---
- After you write a one-sentence conclusion sentence, spend a few more minutes finishing up your body paragraphs and making sure they’re developed enough. Then add some sentences to the introduction and the conclusion and make corrections.
- ---
- - Your introduction can be a some people / other people statement (just be sure not to copy the prompt if it’s also in the some/other form).
- “Many people believe that the biggest advantage of the Internet is the amount of information we now have available. However, a few think that some issues can arise when we have so much information. In my opinion, the amount of information is more of a benefit than a problem. I have three reasons for this opinion.”
