  22. - occasion: How many times have you seen it? the last time, millions of times
  23. - a period of time: I had a good time. It’s the tragedy of our time.
  24. - the thing measured by hours, minutes, and seconds: How much time do you have? I don’t have a lot of free time. (“How long?” is about this type of “time”)

  35. (slightly less strong: Every copy of new books will be digital. We won’t be able to get new books on paper any more.)
  36. weaker meaning: Every book will have an available digital version. We won’t need to use printed books any more, but they will continue to exist.
  37. ---
  38. Are there other technologies (like paper books and vinyl records) that you think will mostly disappear in the future (or become niche products that only a few “strange” people want to buy).

  52. 7 T
  53. 8 T
  54. Ann: I think the thing that’s fabulous about opening the story up to others is, it comes back. And it’s not just remarking on what we’re doing. What we ended up getting were other people’s dreams.

  66. ---
  67. p. 133 part 13 - contrastive stress = stress on a word or words in a sentence to emphasize contrast
  68. If only one word is stressed, there’s probably contrast with what someone else did or said.
  69. i ordered TWO cheeseburgers = I asked for 2, not another number.
  70. i ordered two CHEESEburgers = I asked for burgers with cheese, not regular hamburgers.
  71.
  72. We can also contrast two things in one sentence:
  73. MARY cooked the DESSERT, and JOHN cooked the MEAL
  74.
  75. he teaches english as a foreign language (normal pronunciation stresses “English”, “foreign” and “language”)

  81. Let’s eat Grandpa! = I’m suggesting that we eat my grandfather.
  82. (In this sentence, “Grandpa” is capitalized because it functions as his name.)
  83.
  84. She enjoys cooking her pets and her family. (no pauses, rising intonation only on “her pets”)
  85. She enjoys cooking, her pets, and her family. (pauses between, and “cooking” and “her pets” have rising intonation)
  86. ---
  87. Homework: Make a list of questions humans and extraterrestrials (space aliens) might have during first contact, and make a list of possible misunderstandings and communication problems they might have.
  88. (Tomorrow in class, you will prepare and then perform a conversation between aliens and humans at first contact.)
