  1. >weeks pass, and the grass grows back just fine
  2. >but you’re much more worried about Derpy
  3. >you inspected the damage that she did to herself
  4. >she’s got a burn blister on her tail, and about an inch of the tail fluff is gone, burnt away
  5. >when you flipped her over to check on her stomach, you noticed something you hadn’t before
  6. >her stomach skin is upraised and inflamed
  7. >you gently poke it and ask her if it hurts
  8. >she shakes her head no, so this must be an old injury
  9. >upon further inspection of her entire body, there’s something a bit odder
  10. >ever since her fluff started growing out heavily, her roots have been blackened
  11. >you thought you were just seeing things before, but now you can see an inch of black fluff on her body and mane
  12. >you’d initially thought that it was from the burns, but burns don’t grow out
  13. >you asked her about it, but she didn’t understand
  14. >she just thinks she’s a “wainbow fwuffy” now
  15. >you poked at it and it didn’t flake away
  16. >you tried to wash it off, but it didn’t help
  17. >it’s created a really odd contrast
  18. >you can almost swear that her grey is progressively becoming lighter and the yellow is turning into a peachy color
  19. >after you let her fluff grow out some more over the course of a few more months, you can see this start to take effect
  20. >about half of her is black now, her grey is white, and her yellow has faded to an extremely dull eggshell
  21. >you take her to the vet, something you feel you should’ve done a while ago
  22. >he inspects her closely and looks you dead in the eye
  23. >”Well? What’s wrong with her?”
  24. >”Nothing.”
  25. >”But her fluff is changing color! She used to be grey! She’s practically white now!”
  26. >”Hair dye fades.”
  27. >the words hit you like a truck
  28. >you open your mouth to say something
  29. >but nothing comes out
  30. >you take a breath and try again
  31. >”W-what did you say?”
  32. >”She’s not grey. She’s black. Same thing goes for the mane. It’s purple.”
  33. >you look down at her, happily babbling to herself
  34. >”You’re…you’re not Derpy?”
  35. >she looks at you, confused
  36. >”Who not Dewpy?”
  37. >”You.”
  38. >she looks stunned
  39. >”Nu! Me Dewpy! Daddeh caw me Dewpy! Dat me!”
  40. >she may be named Derpy, but she’s not Derpy
  41. >and then everything falls into place
  42. >the excellent vocabulary
  43. >the fluff
  44. >the fading colors
  45. >the upraised skin
  46. >she can speak well because she’s not Derpy
  47. >the fluff fading away is because she was dyed
  48. >the upraised skin is a chemical burn scar, probably from bleaching
  49. >the dopeyness is just general fluffy stupidity
  50. >in addition to abusing her, the bastard that did it stole a fluffy’s identity and made her think she was someone she wasn’t
  51. >”No. No, you’re not. Your name is probably something else.”
  52. >”Dewpy get noo nahe?”
  53. >”Not quite. You’ll just get your old one back.”
  54. >you realize that she doesn’t remember being a different pony, and she can’t remember anything from before you found her
  55. >you’re going to have to do something you really don’t want to
  56. >you’ll have to trigger a flashback
  57. >she won’t like it, and neither will you
  58. >but at least you two will be able to stop living a lie
  59. >you can help her come to terms with it
  60. >she can overcome her fear of her old daddy, and finally accept people back into her life
  61. >but how can you do it?
  62. >there’s no chance that you’re going to hit her
  63. >you’re not evil
  64. >you’re not her old daddy
  65. >so, you let her fluff grow out some more
  66. >you trim away as much of the dyed fluff as you can, much to her chagrin
  67. >eventually, all of the grey and yellow fluff is gone
  68. >the pony that stands before you is a very dark blue, with a dark purple mane
  69. >”Hi.”
  70. >”Hi, daddeh! Why cut Dewpy fwuff?”
  71. >”You’ll see, sweetie.”
  72. >you pick her up and set her down in front of a mirror
  73. >she cringes and tries to look away
  74. >”Derpy? Who is that pony?”
  75. >she shudders some more
  76. >”PweasedaddehnohewtMihnigh!”
  77. >Midnight?
  78. >”Is that pony named Midnight?”
  79. >”BuhdaddehMihnighwuvsouu!”
  80. >you hate what you’re doing, but it’s necessary
  81. >”Midnight. Is that you?”
  82. >”OUCHIES!”
  83. >you thought you stepped on a wing or something, but it’s just her reliving what happened
  84. >”Midnight. It’s okay. I’m not going to give you ouchies.”
  85. >”Pweasegiveweggiebahdaddehnobboboojuice!”
  86. >”Midnight. I love you.”
  87. >she stops shouting and begins crying
  88. >you hug her tightly as you feel the wet tears seep through your shirt
  89. >”Midnight…your old daddy is gone. I’m your new daddy.”
  90. >she looks up at your through bleary eyes
  91. >”Y-you no new daddeh…”
  92. >the words made your heart sink
  93. >”What?”
  94. >”Mihnigh…know ouu…”
  95. >”You remember me?”
  96. >”Mihnigh no fuhgeh…oou hewp mihnigh…oou sahe me…oou hewp me…oou give Mihnigh muffehs…”
  97. >snapping her back to her old self hasn’t erased her “Derpy” memories
  98. >you hold her close
  99. >”Midnight, you’re safe now.”
  100. >”…Tank oou.”
  101. >you hold her out in front of you
  102. >”For what?”
  103. >”Geh Mihnigh bah to Mihnigh. No wike Dewpy.”
  104. >you chuckle and hug her once more
  105. >”Yeah, I like Midnight, too.”
  106. >the two of you hug in silence for a while
  107. >”Mihnigh wuvs oou, daddeh.”
  108. >”I love you too, Midnight.”
