Vietnamese Ambassador to Japan Nguyen Quoc Cuong said Vietnam annually screens around 300 foreign movies, including 10 Japanese ones. However, only few Vietnamese films hit cinemas in Japan, he noted.

He hoped more Vietnamese films would come to Japanese people in the coming time.

Based on the novel by best-selling author Nguyen Nhat Anh, the film is set in the mid-1980s in a small village, telling the story of two young brothers who share everything, but compete for the affection of the same girl.

It was listed among the top 10 outstanding cultural events in Vietnam and won the important Bong Sen Vang (Golden Lotus) prize at the 19th Vietnam Film Festival in 2015.

The film was Vietnam’s only representative at the TIFF Kids International Film Festival, which is part of the prestigious Toronto International Film Festival.

Besides this, it also bagged the best film award at the second Silk Road International Film Festival and the Golden Kite at the Vietnam Film Festival 2015.

Hong Kong and Amsterdam-based Fortissimo Films, which handled international sales for the film, introduced the film at the 68th annual Cannes Film Festival.

The film was also screened at the American Film Market in Los Angeles in November 2015.

Đại sứ Việt Nam tại Nhật Bản Nguyễn Quốc Cường cho biết Việt Nam hàng năm chiếu khoảng 300 bộ phim nước ngoài, trong đó có 10 phim Nhật Bản. Tuy nhiên, ông ta lưu ý rằng chỉ có một vài bộ phim Việt Nam được chiếu ở các rạp chiếu phim ở Nhật Bản.
Ông ta hy vọng rằng sẽ có nhiều bộ phim Việt Nam sẽ được chiếu cho người Nhật trong thời gian tới.
Dựa trên tiểu thuyết bán chạy nhất của tác giả Nguyễn Nhật Ánh, bộ phim được đặt vào giữa những năm 1980 ở một ngôi làng nhỏ, kể về một câu chuyện của hai anh em trẻ chia sẻ cho nhau mọi thứ, nhưng lại cùng yêu một cô gái.
Đây là một trong 10 sự kiện văn hóa nổi bật nhất ở Việt Nam và đã đoạt giải thưởng Bông Sen Vàng  tại Liên Hoan Phim Việt Nam lần thứ 19 năm 2015.
Bộ phim này là đại diện duy nhất của Việt Nam tại Liên hoan phim quốc tế TIFF dành cho trẻ em, là một phần của Liên hoan phim quốc tế Toronto nổi tiếng.
Bên cạnh đó, bộ phim này còn nhận được giải thưởng phim hay nhất tại Liên hoan phim quốc tế Silk Road lần thứ 2 và giải Cánh Diều Vàng tại liên hoan phim Việt Nam năm 2015.
Hãng phim Fortissimo của Hồng Kông và Amsterdam, chuyên kinh doanh phim quốc tế, đã giới thiệu bộ phim tại Liên hoan phim Cannes lần thứ 68.
Bộ phim cũng được chiếu tại Los Angeles, Mỹ vào tháng 11/2015.
