- He looked into her eyes, daring her to take the first step.
- “Are you married?” said Jack. He wasn't a homewrecker. He certainly wasn't averse to playing with married people, but it had to be with consent of all parties.
- “Open relationship,” said the woman. He had seen her from across the bar, and maybe it was the beautiful bushy hair, maybe it was the jazzy jeweled skrt, or perhaps that deep stare, but he had to say hello. She had said her name was River. There was a look in her eyes, like she was some sort of mythical being on Earth. It's a look people have when they've met those dark creatures in the space between spaces within the universe. Or when they are one themselves.
- Jack sipped his drink. His eyes scanned her body, allowing himself a small amount of fantasy about what he could do with her later. Most women would have shivered, or wilted. But River stared back at him, a small smile crawling over her mouth. As if she was imagining as well. She leaned over in his direction.
- “I've heard things about you, Jack. Heard you're a dangerous man,” said River. There was something behind her statement—did she know him from the conman days?
- “Oh, I've done some things. Surprised you've heard of me. I'm a new arrival in town,” said Jack.
- “I keep my ears open. Fortunately, I have a thing for dangerous men,” said River. Her grin got wider, and she shook out her hair. Perfume wafted to Jack's face. It was a 21st century fragrance—it didn't belong in the 61st century. The Doctor would have immediately warned Jack that something was wrong; fortunately, Mr. Responsible Dad in A Leather Jacket wasn't hear right now. Jack leaned over to the woman, her fragrance filling his senses.
- “You like to let them to sweep them you off your feet?” asked Jack.
- River rolled her eyes. “Heavens no. I like to sweep them off their feet, and leave them a screaming wreck.”
- Jack gave his own grin. “I don't mind a little screaming.”
- “I'm quite the screamer myself. But a man has to play his cards right to find that out,” said River. She looked at the door to the bar. Three Judoon with guns had walked in. “Looks like our little conversation has been cut short.”
- She got up, and kissed him on the cheek. Then she walked out the back door.
- There was a split second pause, and then the Judoon chased after her. Jack bit his lip for a second, and then stuck out his foot, tripping the Judoon. Then he ran through the exit, chasing after the bushy-haired woman.
- River was crawling up a fence, and looked back at him.
- “That was barely a conversation. I didn't even get to hold your hand yet,” said Jack.
- Her eyes studied him deeply, like they were searching for something. Apparently, they found it, as River helped pull him up, and said “Tell you what. Help me escape, and I'll go to dinner. Fair, my Jack Harkness?”
- “Sure. How do you know my name?”
- River gave a devilish smile. “Spoilers, my dear.”
