- "Yeah, well. . . " The deputy shook his head. "Why Kristen was here--what got her so scared--was that I forgot the clip for my revolver at home."
- "What?"
- "Before all this we were looking for a house," Green said quickly. "So we're staying with her sister. Her sister's got kids. She doesn't like a loaded gun around the house. So when I go home, I take the clip out."
- "And you forgot to reload it."
- "I wasn't supposed to be on till midnight," Green said. "Got a call at home from Hart about all this, asking if I could get you at the airport. Walked out the door in a hurry and just forgot."
- "But you have the clip now."
- "Oh, yeah. She brought it to me." Green patted his holster. "I'm all set."
- ...
- Green had somehow managed to move his arm. He'd pulled his gun out of his holster.
- And dropped it on the floor.
- Fellowes smiled. "Deputy Green. Let me get that for you." Fellowes bent down and picked it up.
- Green's eyes showed a mixture of terror and defiance.
- "I would have let you live, but when the killing is so easy . . ."
- Fellowes shot Green square in the forehead. The deputy toppled forward onto the coffee table; blood pooled around his head.
