I Tried Dying Honourably

結論から言おう。振られた。嫌ですの一言で終わった。

ここは魔王城の中盤当たりの部屋である。
そう、転生者である俺、瀬川陽気（今はヨウキ）が守っている部屋だ。
その部屋の中央で俺は何をしているかというと

I'll start with the result. I was rejected. 'No.' With just this one word, everything ended.


This is a room halfway into the Demon King castle.

Right, it was room that I, the reincarnated Segawa Youki (currently Youki), was protecting.

I was in the centre of the room.

「……振られた。もう駄目だ。死のう……」

体育座りをして地面にのの字を書いている。
前世から合わせたら何回目の告白失敗だろうか。

"...Rejected. It's all over. I'll just die..."

I was sitting, holding my knees, and drawing squiggles on the floor.

俺の隣で困ったようにオロオロしている僧侶の格好をした少女、名はセシリアというらしい。

Next to me was the nervous and troubled looking cleric girl, whose named seemed to be Cecilia.

何故か笑いが込み上げてくる。
人間生きてたら振られることなんて何回もあるだろう。
実際、前世で何回も振られたことあるし。
だから、今回こそはという気持ちはあったのだ。

For some reason a laugh escaped me.

次転生するときは人間がいいな。

彼女が武器である杖を俺に向けている。
どうやら俺を仕留めにかかるらしい。
恋した人に殺されるなら本望だな。
この世界で楽しいことなんてないし。

"Umm, are you okay? ...Huh? What am I saying to my enemy!?"

I was thinking that she was going to cheer me up, but then she immediately prepared for battle.

I'm glad. If she gently pitied me, it'd just dig at my heart even more.

Right. I'm this girl's enemy.

Why is that?

It's because I'm a demon.

It'd be nice if I was a human the next time I reincarnated.

If I was a human, then... I'd probably be rejected for having a boring face, huh?


She raised her staff at me.

彼女が放った魔法は消えていた。俺は何もしていないので、彼女が魔法をキャンセルしたのだろうか?

だが、一度放った魔法を無理やりキャンセルすると、身体に結構な負担がかかる。
その証拠に彼女は方膝をついて、息を吐いている。なのに何故そんなことを?

「……何故抵抗しないのですか。ここ一ヶ月の闘いであなたの実力はある程度理解しているつもりです。あんな魔法、避けるなり相殺するなりあなたならできるはずです！」

魔法キャンセルの反動から立ち直った彼女は俺に問い掛ける。
何故って言われてもなぁ。


"Aren't you going to resist? After battling with you for a month, I understand how strong you are. You should have been able to avoid and nullify that magic!"

After recovering from the backlash of cancelling magic, she asked me a question.

But even if you ask me 'Why?'...

「君に振られたから死にたくなった」

「ふざけないでください！」

彼女、怒る姿もかわいい……じゃなくて。仕方ない真面目に答えよう。

"You rejected me so I wanted to do."

"Please don't mess with me!"

(Even when she's angry, she's cute... Ah, that's not important.)

Since there was no choice, I answered seriously.

「生きていたって楽しくないんだよ。この部屋にいるだけの生活だぞ?外に出るには人里襲いに行くとか理由ないと出れないんだ。んで、俺は人襲いたくないから出られない」

前世の記憶があるので、どうしても抵抗があるのだ。

"There's nothing fun even if I live. My whole life is spent in this room, you know? If I don't have an excuse like attacking villages or whatever, I can't leave here. And since I don't feel like attacking humans, I can't go outside."

「……あなたみたいな魔族を見たことがありませんね。私が知っている魔族は獰猛で残忍な、人をゴミのように扱うような性格をしているはずなのですが」

俺の言葉を聞いて不思議がっているようだ。
彼女の言う通り、確かに魔族たちはそのような性格を持った者達が大半を閉めている。
だが、俺は例外だ。

"...I've never come across a demon like you, huh. As I know them, demons should have personalities that are ferocious and brutal, and treat humans like trash, but..."

It seems that she was curious after hearing my words.

As she said, demons are mostly a bunch that have personalities like that.

But I'm an exception.

「だって俺元人間みたいなもんだし」

間違ったことは言っていないだろう。

"After all, I'm a former human."

I probably haven't said anything that would be a mistake.

「なっ！？魔族には人間を魔族に変える邪法があるというですか」

彼女は目を見開き驚愕の表情を見せる。
なんか間違った解釈された。
そんな魔法はない。
チート貰った俺でもそんなことはできないな。

"Wha-!? Are you saying that there's a black magic among demons to turn humans into demons?"

Her eyes widened and she showed me a shocked expression.

It seemed that she somehow interpreted it wrong.

There was no such magic.

Even someone with cheats like me couldn't do it.

「違う違う。俺は転生した人間なんだよ。前世が人間なの」

急に彼女が冷めた目で俺を見出した。
こいつ何言っているの的なオーラが出ている。

"No, no. I'm a reincarnated human. I was a human in my previous life, you see."

She suddenly looked at me with cold eyes.

She had an aura like 'the heck is this guy saying?'.

「……なんだよ。本当だぞ。俺は地球生まれの瀬川陽樹で、死因は交通事故だ」

地球とか交通事故とか意味は分からないかもしれないが、とりあえず一度死んだ身だとアピールする。

"...What? I'm telling the truth, you know. I was born as Segawa Youki on Earth, and died in a traffic accident."

Though she might not know what Earth and traffic accident mean, for the moment I claimed that I had died.

「……そんなこと信じられませんね。では、仮にあなたの言うことが本当だとして、何故魔王に味方をしているのですか? 我々人間に味方をしてくれてもよかったのではないですか?」

「確かにそうかもしれないが、仮に俺が味方すると言ってたら、あの勇者達は俺のことを信じたと思うか?」

あんな正義感の固まりで、我が強そうな奴が、敵と認識している奴の言うことを聞いただろうか? 勇者がすべてなビッチ魔法使いはもちろん、剣士など論外だ。

まあ、仲間になる気なんてさらさらなかったけど。いくら彼女がいるからって、イケメン勇者、ビッチ魔法使い、寡黙な剣士。そんな息が詰まりそうなパーティーには入りたくない。

彼女は俺の言葉に納得してしまったのか、黙ってしまう。

"...I can't believe such a thing. Let's say for instance that you're telling the truth. In that case, why are you an ally of the Demon King? You should find us, the allies of humanity, as a good thing, right?"

"That might be the case, but let's say for instance that I said that I was your ally; do you think that that hero and the rest of them believe me?"

Would that lump of justice, would that egotistic guy believe the words of someone he recognised to be an enemy? The hero would definitely not, the slut magician was obvious, and the swordsman would be out of the question.

Well, I didn't have the slightest interest in becoming their companion though. Even if the cleric was there, there was still the handsome hero, the slut magician, and the silent swordsman. I wouldn't want to enter a party where I'd have trouble even breathing.

It might have been because she acknowledged my words, but she stayed silent.

「まあ、あの勇者くん達の実力なら魔王ぐらい倒せるよ」

なんだかんだ勇者だし。
剣士や魔法使いも実力は本物だったから余裕だろう。

"Well, with the strength of Hero-kun and the rest, they should be able to beat someone like the Demon King."

In the end, he is a hero after all.

The strength of the swordsmand and the magician are the real thing as well, so they should be fine.

「……あなたが魔王を倒した方が早かったのではないのですか?」

「そんなことできるわけないだろ。人間社会で一兵士が王を殺したら、どうなる?」

俺は彼女に質問する。

"...If it were you, wouldn't the Demon King be defeated even faster?"

"Like I could do something like that. In the human society, what would happen if a soldier killed the king?"

I asked her a question.

「…最悪処刑され、逃げれば指名手配されますね」

「魔族ならそんなもんじゃ済まないぞ。魔王を倒すんだ。次の魔王に担ぎ上げられる可能性がある。俺はそんなのごめんだから」

地位が低いから微妙だと言ったが、魔王になればいずれ討伐される運命なのだ。まあ、魔族である限り、遅かれ早かれ人間に討伐されるだろうが。

"...At worst, execution, and if you ran, you'd be wanted, huh."

"As a demon, it wouldn't end with just that, you know. I kill the Demon King. Then I'd become the next Demon King. I'll bloody pass on that."

Though it'd be a delicate situation since I was of low rank, if I became the Demon King I'd have the fate of being subjugated. Well, as long as I was a demon though, I'd be targetted by humans sooner or later.

「今までこの部屋守ってたって言ったけど、実際引きこもりみたいなもんでさ、飽きてきてたところだったんだ」

そんな中、現れたのが勇者パーティーである。

"Though I said I'd been protecting this room the whole time, I really did end up like a shut-in, and was just about sick of it."

And the ones who appeared in my room were the Hero party.

「本当はやられようかなと思ったんだけど、
昔発症した厨二病が災いして、ついテンションが上がって……」

全滅させてしまったのだ。

"I was actually planning on losing, but then I had a sudden and disastrous relapse of chuunibyou, and kinda got enthusiastic about it..."

And then ended up wiping them out.

「このままじゃ、この世界的にまずいと思って、回復させて近くの村に捨てようと決めたんだ。そうしたら、君を見て一目惚れしたんだ」

「はぁ……そうですか」

「一ヶ月闘いながら君を見ていた。でも、俺のせいでこの世界は平和にならないんだなーって気づいたんだ。これ以上足止めさせるのはまずいと思って、今日、意を決して告白の場を作ったんだ」

あえなく玉砕してしまったが。

"I was thinking that at this rate, it'd be pretty bad for the world, so I decided to heal you all and drop you off at a nearby village. When I did, I was taken by you at first sight."

"Haa... I see."

"I'd been watching you all month during our battles. But then I noticed that the world wouldn't be at peace because of me. Thinking that it'd be bad if I stayed indoors any longer, today, I gathered my determination and set-up a situation where I could confess to you."

Unfortunately I ended up in an honourable defeat.

「あの、勇者パーティーは魔王を倒すだろう。そうしたら俺は住み処を失う。君にも振られちゃったし。だから、もういいんだよ」

転生して種族が魔族だった時点で俺は終わっていたのだ。
部屋の中が静まり返る。
数分経つと彼女がゆっくり口を開いた。

"That Hero party will probably defeat the Demon King. After that, I'll lose my home. I was rejected by you as well. That's why I'm done."

I was finished the moment I reincarnated as a demon.

The inside of the room became dead silent.

After a few minutes, she slowly opened her mouth.

「……良くないです。あなたには力があります。私たち勇者パーティーでは相手にならないほどの。その力を是非私たち人間のために奮ってくれませんか?」

いきなり彼女がそう切り出した。

"...That's no good. You have power. Enough power that we of the Hero party aren't a match for you. Won't you use that power for humanity?"

She suddenly started saying such things.

「……そもそも、あなた程の力があれば人間にも化けられるでしょう? そうすれば十分人間社会にも溶けこめるはずです」

何故こういう展開になったんだろうか?
話の流れについていけていない俺をよそに彼女は話を続ける。

"...In the first place, with your level of power, can't you transform into human form? If you do so, you should be able to fit into human society just fine."

Just how did the situation develop into this?

Despite me being unable to follow the conversation, she continued to talk.

「だから……私と外の世界に出ましょう」

彼女が俺に手を差し延べてきた。
どうやら引きこもり卒業の時がきたらしい。
その日、魔王は倒され世界は平和になった。

"That's why... Won't you come outside with me?"

She held out her hand to me.

It seems that today was the day I'd graduate from being a shut-in.

On that day, the Demon King was defeated, and peace was brought to the world.
