  72. >1oom
  73. Open source game engine recreation of Master of Orion 1, requires the original game files. The project is done. "Out of the box 1oom looks and plays just like MOO1, but without DOSBox. Extra features include larger galaxy view resolution, mouse wheel support, planetary governor for less micro, space combat autoresolve for skipping boring battles, hotseat multiplayer, and quality-of-life streamlining."

  82. >Remnants of the Precursors
  83. Free, open source remake of Master of Orion 1 in Java. Aims to be an accurate recreation of the original game, but comes with lots of new, original artwork and some quality of life improvements. Playable and fairly close to feature complete, just missing some additional polish, Orion, random event monsters, and some diplomatic options.

  93. >Dominus Galaxia
  94. Turn based space 4x that tries to be a modernised 3D version of the original Master of Orion. It stays true to most of its mechanics, but also makes some changes, like having hex tiles on the combat map, some different planetary sliders and different ways for colonisation to happen.
  95. The currently unfinished, but perfectly playable version of the game can be downloaded for free here:

  102. >Star Ruler 2
  103. Free, open source space 4X RTS game that used to be commercial, but went open source because the devs are bros. Features interplanetary supply chains, diplomatic bidding auctions and a very detailed ship creator.
  104. There used to be a compiled release with music (https://github.com/powercat/StarRuler2-Source/releases), but it appears to be down. Unless someone else uploads another compiled version, you might have to manually compile the game yourself from the source code here:

  114. >Aurora
  115. A free space 4X game that can best be described as a mix between radar screens and spreadsheets. This game puts an impressively detailed focus on design and logistics. You don't just design space ships, you design (and research) their individual components. You mine and ship various minerals across a potentially huge galaxy. You set up bases for refueling, supplies, maintenance, ammo and keep them stocked up with interstellar supply routes.
  116. The game doesn't explain itself much at all, so you will need to look up some tutorials.
  117. The C# rewrite of the game has recently been released. It's still a bit buggy, but it's already vastly superior to the old VB6 version:
  118. http://aurora2.pentarch.org/index.php?board=276.0
  119. NOTE: If your PC is not set to use a "." as decimal separator, the game might break.
  120. Find and use AuroraMod on the modding reddit. AuroraMod lets you customise the graphics and lets you automatically fix the decimal separator issue without having to change it on your system:

  130.
  131. >The Ur-Quan Masters

  140. >Starsector
  141. A space game with very large scope. Essentially Sid Meier's Pirates or Mount and Blade in space. You can fly around with a single ship, do missions, trade, hunt bounty, get faction favor, or command whole fleets and even colonise planets. Trade and smuggling are well developed systems, requiring you to make use of stealthy shipping routes and the black market. Prices of goods depend on the socio-economic situation on the respective planet. Ships can be customised a whole lot. Combat is very flashy real time action. You either give orders to your ships on a tactical map or steer an individual ship directly. There are also many mods, adding new ships, weapons, and even 4X mechanics.
  142. The developers are nice guys who let everyone reuse other people's cd-keys to try the game out. If you like the game, then you should consider supporting them.

  145.
  146. >Shores of Hazeron
  147. Free, genre-mixing MMO space game that lets you build cities on different planets and design space ships. The game is now completely free to play again and financed through Patreon. You will probably be creeped out by the graphics and horrifying randomly generated creatures, but the game is definitely insteresting enough to make staying with it worth it. This game is a city builder, FPS, RTS, space ship design and exploration game that is also an MMO with a huge scale and seamless transition between planets and space. The moment you manufacture your first rocket and fly to the moon is very memorable.

  211. >People's Tactics
  212. Free, turn-based hex-tile wargame and predecessor to Advanced Tactics and Shadow Empire. The game is very lightweight with only around 28 mb, but still an interesting strategy game with ground-air-naval units, values for readiness, experience and fortification, logistics supply lines, chain of command and reinforcements being trained by your captured cities and sent out from your main HQ to your frontlines. The game features lots of scenarios and a random map generator. You can play against AI or human players via PBEM. Also very moddable. The default resolution is pretty small and can't be changed as far as I can tell. To start a scenario, you need to press the "load" button. See the docs folder for the manual.

  238. >Hammer and Sickle
  239. The forgotten abandonware sequel of the Silent Storm series. Turn based, squad combat similar to Xcom, but during the cold war. Expect it to be clunky, buggy and difficult. Might need a patch or crack to make it run on modern computers. It uses the notoriously terrible DRM StarForce, which can prevent Windows 7 from starting, so a no-cd crack is adviced.

  332.
  333. >Crusader Kings 2
  334. Paradox' notorious medieval european strategy game about rising from count to king, plotting assassinations, arranging mariages, and incest is playable for free on Steam. There is a ridiculous amount of DLC, but you don't really need any to have a good time. You might need to look up some tutorials or guides to figure out what to do though, because it's a Paradox game.

Features city building, real time army warfare, diplomacy, trade routes, dungeon exploring and Crusader Kings-like character management and marriages. The map is split into territories that can hold one settlement each. Settlements can be upgraded into cities, which lets you zoom into their tile and build them up in city builder fashion like Ceasar or Anno. Don't let too many corpses lie around or the Ghuls will come. Also supports modding. There is also an optional "deluxe" graphics pack available for sale. This is version 3 of Bronze Age. The "classic" download gives you version 1 and 2, which are very different games.
  353. Bronze Age 1 is more like a Dwarf Fortress-like colony builder, where all your citizens are shown walking around, you control soldiers individually like an RTS, and the map is not split into territories. Doesn't have a lot of content though.
  354. Bronze Age 2 is a little more abstract and advanced than 1. It introduced territories, changed the game to a hex-tile map, and doesn't show any people walking around, other than military units, which have been changed to squads.
  355. Keep in mind that all versions of Bronze Age tend to run into framerate problems eventually. If you ever feel like the game didn't register some input, hold the button down a little longer.

  442. A world and history generator, an open world roleplaying game, a colony manager, a 3D fortress creator. A game quite ridiculous in scope. But don't let that shy you away from the it. Look up some basic tutorial, then start playing and use the wiki whenever you want to look up something new.

  497.
  498. >Generic Mod Enabler
  499. Free, useful, little utility program that makes it easier to enable and disable mods for pretty much any game. You just need to place it into your game's main directory, then put your modded files in the "MODS" folder. When you then click to enable the mod, the program will automatically backup the game's default files and replace them with the modded files. When disabling the mod, it will replace the files again with the default files and delete the backup.
