1. >The sound of a school bell chimes through the town of P0nyville.
2. >Today marks the final day of the first half of the childrens' school year, and the first day of their winter break.
3. >It also marks six months that you've known your marefriend, and three months since you adopted a filly.
4. >Time really flies in this magical, colorful world of miniature talking horses.
5. >It's home now.
6. >It's where your heart is.
7. >Your own family, with your own house, and plenty of friends to call your own.
8. >As you strap a couple of tennis rackets to your shoes, a pile of letters falls through the mail slot on the front door.
9. >Perfect timing.
10. >You flip through the letters as you stand up.
11. >Bill, bill, junk mail, letter for Speck, letter for Sirocca, letter from the Mayor, letter from the Princesses, bill, bil-
12. >Letter from the Princesses?
13. >You flip it over and look at the seal.
14. >It's sealed four times.
15. >That's so wasteful and unnecessary.
16. >You toss the rest of the mail on a small table in the foyer.
17. >Before you get a chance to examine it more thoroughly, one very excited and very happy bat p0ny flies down the stairs.
18. >"Anon! We have to go get Sirocca from school, hurry up!"
19. >Speck floats in front of you wearing a white and blue scarf, matching boots, and a matching knit cap.
20. >She actually looks kind of good with that cap on.
21. >You slip the letter into a pocket of your wool coat before Speck notices what you're holding.
22. >"Come on, she's probably waiting outside in the cold!"
23. >A smile crosses your lips as you open the front door to a world of pristine white snow.
24. >Sirocca left for school this morning without her winter clothes.
25. >That could be blamed on you.
26. >You forgot to check the weather schedule for today.
27. >Speck tugs at you as she flies through the door.
28. >You shut the door behind you as you start jogging after her, the crisp snow crunching with each of your steps.
29. >A brisk winter wind chills your uncovered face as you pass the library.
30. >Sirocca wouldn't even try to fly through this.
31.
32. >On arrival to the school, you find exactly what you expected to.
33. >One very upset little bat filly glares up at you as you step through the front doors of the building.
34. >She crosses her arms and huffs at you.
35. >You frown at her and cross your arms.
36. "You know this is your fault."
37. >Her jaw drops and she starts waving her arms and sputtering.
38. >"No! You're supposed to check the weather reports in the morning!"
39. >You shake your head and put a hand up to your chin.
40. "No, I think I told you to start doing that."
41. >Speck shoves a hoof into your hip.
42. >"Stop teasing her."
43. >Sirocca leaps into your arms as you reach out to her.
44. "I'm sorry I forgot to check the reports today."
45. >She nuzzles your cheek as you wrap her up in your coat.
46. >"It's okay, daddy."
47. >It was nice, hearing someone call you that.
48. >You always felt proud that you were accomplishing something that, five years ago, was just another dead dream.
49. >Speck climbs onto your back as you turn to leave the school.
50. >Double the bat, double the warmth.
51. >Both of them shiver as you start walking through the snow.
52. >A faint cloud of white forms in front of your lips as you sigh.
53. >You reach behind you and grab Speck by the scruff of her neck.
54. >She lets go of you as you stuff her inside your coat.
55. >They'll be warmer like that anyway.
56. >A cold wind bites at your back.
57. >Your suffering intensifies.
58. >Sirocca ducks her head inside your coat and buries her face into your arm.
59. >She nudges against you and shakes her head lightly.
60. "Sirocca, what're you doing?"
61. >"Trying to get comfortable."
62. >You feel her pull her head back from your arm.
63. >She's definitely up to something.
64.
65. >"Daddy? What's this?"
66. >Her head pops out of your coat, her mouth holding the letter from the princesses.
67. >She slaps you in the face with it on accident.
68. >Speck grabs it between her teeth before you can reach for it.
69. >"Anon, what's this?"
70. "It's nothing."
71. >"It has four seals of the Princesses. It doesn't look like nothing."
72. "It's unimportant. They send me an envelope like that every year around this time."
73. >You continue walking as she continues to pry.
74. >"Have you ever opened them?"
75. "Once."
76. >"What was inside?"
77. >Sirocca's head shifts between you and Speck as you talk.
78. "A letter.
79. >"And what did the letter say?"
80. "Something about Hearth's Warming Eve and holiday wishes. I don't know, Speck."
81. >She gasps and starts trying to pry the seals away from the outter envelope.
82. >You take the letter away from her.
83. >She and Sirocca both start pouting.
84. >"But, daddy. What if it's an invitation to go to Canterlot to see the pageant?"
85. >"Or what if they're inviting us to go spend the holidays with them in some far off land?"
86. >Sirocca raises and eyebrow and stares at her mother.
87. "Speck. That's stupid, and no."
88. >"So what is it then?"
89. >You tap the letter against Speck's nose.
90. "We'll discuss it when we get home."
91. >Two bat p0nies explode from your coat as soon as you start to speak.
92. >You close your coat and continue waddling through town.
93. >Tennis rackets for shoes might have been an awful idea, now that you think about it.
94.
95. >The house is filled with screams and screeches as two bat p0nies fly around holding one small, silver ticket each.
96. >Thank you based Princesses.
97. >This was exactly what your household needed.
98. >One average human with an increasing migraine, a fully grown bat mare that acts like a filly, and a filly that acts like her adopted mother.
99. >They finally settle down and bounce on the couch beside you.
100. >"Can we go?! Please, Anon?!"
101. >"Daddy! Please, we have to go!"
102. >"Anon!"
103. >"Daddy!"
104. >You clamp your hands down over their muzzles and stare at them.
105. "We'll go."
106. >They try to screech, but you shake their heads.
107. "On one condition."
108. >Speck starts to stick her tongue out of her mouth to lick your hand.
109. >Your face slowly contorts into one of disgust as her tongue meets your hand.
110. >But you won't let go.
111. >The head of the house must have willpower and strength to overcome his worst enemy:
112. >That which he loves.
113. >Sirocca sees what her mother is doing and starts trying to lick your other hand.
114. >The angels in the heavens must weep for you today.
115. >You hold fast to their muzzles, a single tear slowly trailing down your cheek.
116. >Hold fast, Anon.
117. >Sirocca sneezes into your hand.
118. >No, that's it.
119. >You can't do this.
120. >You let go of them and wipe your hands on Sirocca.
121. >"Ewww. Why-"
122. "This is your fault. Go take a bath."
123. >She harumphs and leaves the room.
124. >Speck nudges you with her nose.
125. >"What's the condition, dear?"
126. "Cheer up."
127. >She tilts her head and presses her front hooves to your chest.
128. >"Cheer up? Why? I don't feel sad, Anon."
129. >Her wings flare out as you hug her around her middle.
130. "No. No, maybe I'm the one that needs to cheer up then."
131. >Her hooves kneed your chest.
132. >"Anon, what's wrong?"
133. >A smile crosses your lips as you stroke her mane.
134. "I guess I just get a little sad during the holidays."
135. >Those soft pony lips press to your own as you stop speaking.
136. >"You don't have to be sad, anymore. You have me and Sirocca, and the Cakes and the Princesses."
137.
138. >Her ear twiches as you scratch behind it.
139. "I'm not sad because I'm alone, Speck. I've just never been in much of a holiday spirit around this time."
140. >A soft screech sounds from upstairs before your bat p0ny gets a chance to inquire further.
141. >Speck sighs softly as she presses her face into your chest.
142. "Are you going to go tell her to stop?"
143. >She rubs her face from side to side on your shirt.
144. >"It's your turn, anyway."
145. >That's not even fair.
146. >It's the holidays, and you need to lay around and mope until the last minute, when you finally decide to leave the house and join in the festivities.
147. >Oh wait, you can't do that anymore.
148. >You have a family now.
149. >Which means you have to take them to do the things they want to do.
150. >And they want to go see the Hearth's Warming Eve pageant in...
151. >Where is it this year?
152. >You pick the letter up off of the coffee table as Speck rolls over onto the couch beside you.
153. >"Dear Anonymous,
154. >You and your family are hereby cordially invited to the annual Hearth's Warming Eve pageant in the Crystal Empire.
155. >We hope to see you there.
156. >Your friends,
157. >Princess Celestia, Princess Luna, and Princess Twilight."
158. >Typical winter holiday fare, with the tickets, and the invitation, and the location being Canterlo-
159. >You close your eyes tight and cringe.
160. >"Is something wrong Anon?"
161. "ThepageantisintheCrystalEmpire."
162. >The strain in your voice and the sharp, slow exhaling of your breath would normally alert Speck that something is, in fact, wrong.
163. >However, she just stares at you, snatches the letter away, reads it quickly, and starts screeching with excitement.
164. >Two hooves slap her face as she covers her mouth.
165. >"WE'RE GOING TO THE CRYSTAL EMPIRE?!"
166. >You nod slowly and grit your teeth.
167. >In an instant, she's gone up the stairs.
168. >Excited screeches and splashes sound from upstairs.
169. >A voice sounds in your head.
170. >
"You could have stopped this!"
171. >But no.
172. >It's already happening, and it's all too late.
173.
174. >One very excited little filly giggles and splashes her hooves around in the water around her.
175. >A small rubber duck rocks back and forth as she guides a little tug boat toward it.
176. >She makes engine noises as she pushes the boat through the water, and ends with a loud explosion as she picks the boat up and slams it down on the duck.
177. >A wave of water splashes over you, soaking your mane and coat, along with the floor.
178. >You scowl briefly, before smiling and slashing water at her.
179. >She screeches and recoils, giggling as she slaps the water in your direction.
180. >The sound of knocking halts you and Sirocca.
181. >"Are you almost finished in there? It's getting late, and we probably need to leave tomorrow."
182. >You shush Sirocca and she shushes you back.
183. "Almost!"
184. >Sirocca starts to giggle and splash a little bit.
185. >Anon's sigh sounds through the door.
186. >"Whatever. Just finish up so we can go eat dinner."
187. "Are we going out to eat?"
188. >"No, I was thinking about making that mango curry you like."
189. >Sirocca claps her hooves together and squeals.
190. >That does sound really good.
191. "Alright, Anon. We'll be out in a minute."
192. >Anon's footsteps grow quiet as he walks down the hall.
193. >Sirocca immediately starts squealing and splashing again.
194. >"WE'RE GOING TO THE CRYSTAL EMPIRE!"
195. >You join in with her excited screeching.
196. >But, just as suddenly as you start, you stop.
197. >Sirocca looks up at you with her big, sad, blue eyes.
198. >"But what if Daddy doesn't let us have any fun?"
199. >You tap your lips with a hoof and hum.
200. "Then we'll ditch him and go have our own fun!"
201. >The little bat pony looks down at her rubber duck.
202. >"Why doesn't daddy like having fun?"
203. "I don't know Sirocca. It might just be because of the holidays, from what he's told me."
204. >She harumphs and crosses her forelegs as you hold a towel out.
205. >"But, why? The holidays are supposed to make everyone happy!"
206. >She climbs out of the tub and you start rubbing the towel all over her.
207. "We just need to cheer him up."
208.
209. >Anon groans and pushes his bowl of curry across the table.
210. >You reach for it and pull it close to you as a freshly bathed and dried Sirocca giggles.
211. >The warm curry smears over your muzzle as you plunge your face into the bowl.
212. >"Are spoons too hard for you to use, Speck? Sirocca isn't have any trouble with it."
213. >A chunk of mango falls from your chin as you look up at him.
214. "Spoons are for p0nies who don't enjoy their food."
215. >You go back to loudly slurping and scarfing Anon's bowl of curry.
216. >Sirocca holds her bowl up to him and smiles.
217. >"Please, papa. Can I have some more?"
218. >Anon takes her bowl and walks over to the stove.
219. >As he fills her bowl, you quickly finish the rest of your current bowl.
220. >You wait patiently for him to return to his seat and give Sirocca her bowl back.
221. >You slowly scoot one of your bowls toward him.
222. >He shakes his head and glares at you.
223. >He squints at you as you pick the bowl up and start shaking it at him, your lips drawing back to show all of your teeth as you frown.
224. >Sirocca minds her own business and stares into her curry as she eats.
225. >You shake the bowl harder and start whining.
226. "Please, Anon! I'm still hungry!"
227. >"You're a grown mare, Speck. You can get more yourself."
228. >You throw your arms across the table and start screeching as the bowl slides toward him.
229. >It stops just short of the edge of the table.
230. >You sniffle a little bit.
231. "Anon, please."
232. >"Absolutely not."
233. "I thought you loved me!"
234. >"I do."
235. "Then why won't you get me more curry!"
236. >"You're more than capable of getting it yourself."
237. >Sirocca slowly pushes her bowl toward Anon.
238. >"Daddy, I'm full."
239. >"You didn't even eat all of it."
240. >"You gave me too much."
241. >Anon shrugs and stirs the spoon in the curry.
242. "Can I have it?"
243. >"No."
244. >He takes a bite of the curry and stares at you.
245. "Why do you hate me!"
246. >"I don't. You just decided to eat like a pig, and you know I can't stand that."
247. >He takes another bite and points the spoon at you.
248. >"Besides, I'm hungry and you've already eaten two bowls."
249.
250. "Well then, why did you give me your bowl?"
251. >"You already know why."
252. >You shake your head and shrug.
253. >Sirocca quickly excuses herself from the table and runs up to her room.
254. >Oh.
255. "A-Anon."
256. >"What?"
257. >You point at Sirocca's seat.
258. >He looks at it, his expression changing to one of pure worry.
259. >"Oh."
260. "It's too close to Hearth's Warming Eve, dear."
261. >"Were we fighting?"
262. >You shake your head and smile at him.
263. "No, but you know how sensitive she gets about us. She thinks we're the best parents in the world, right?"
264. >He nods slowly and looks down at his curry.
265. >"Yeah, you're right. I'm sorry Speck."
266. "No, I'm sorry."
267. >Anon sets his bowl down and pushes it away from him as he gets up and walks around the table.
268. >You wrap your forelegs around his neck as he hugs you.
269. >"Come on, we need to go talk to Sirocca."
270. >You nod and follow him as he walks out of the kitchen.
271.
272. >The bedroom door creaks open, followed by hushed whispers.
273. >You sigh deeply, and pretend to snore as your parents approach your bed.
274. >They quietly approach your bed and sit on its edge as they continue to whisper to each other.
275. >"She's so cute when she's asleep."
276. >Anon shushes Speck as he pulls your blanket over you.
277. >He runs his hand over your head and combs his fingers through your mane.
278. >A shudder runs through your spine as he leans down to kiss you on the cheek.
279. >Finally, you decide to look up at him and Speck.
280. >"Did I wake you?"
281. >You shake your head and scoot close to him, cuddling against his side.
282. >He hugs you close as your mother rests her head against his leg.
283. >Your papa grumbles, picks both you and your mother up, and lays back on your bed.
284. >"Sorry we were fighting, Sirocca."
285. >Your mom's eyes meet your own.
286. >She looks sad, almost like she knows she hurt you.
287. >Anon grunts as you climb over his chest and flop onto Speck.
288. >She squeezes you tight and gives you a soft kiss on the forehead.
289. "I love you, mom."
290. >"I love you too, sweetheart."
291. >"You two go to sleep. We have a long day ahead of us, alright?"
292. >You and Speck squeal with excitement as Anon pulls your blanket over the three of you.
