One of the ways is to use backlinks research tools like Ahrefs or Majestic to see where your competitors are linking from and try to recreate those links. The other way is to connect with other webmasters in your niche and see if you can get links from their websites
through forums and blogs.

Ahref is the way I go. Analyse the best links of your competitors and see which you can pick up. Also be willing to get creative, find a mix of appropriate forums to build a reputation on and share with them if it is relevant, speak to bloggers in your industry. Even a little look at Fiverr can yield the odd quality link (ask questions before purchasing as there are lots of sellers of spam and low quality links) with the right time put into research.

This is so damn true. When I started building my site I was ADHD trying to find backlinks. Now I find networking with other people in my industry, doing guest posts, helping to actual build a quality industry rather than not so quality backlinks to boolean text has helped my rank tremendously.
