- Grettir dismounted. He was wearing a helmet and the sax was belted at his side. In his hand he held a large spear with no barbs. Its socket was inlaid with silver. He sat down on the ground and pulled out the nail which held the spear-blade in place. He did this so that Thorbjorn would not be able to throw the spear back at him.

- Neither Thorbjorn nor his son had a helmet. Grettir walked to the marsh, and when he came within range he threw the spear at Thorbjorn. The blade was looser on the shaft than Grettir had intended, and it wobbled in flight before falling off and plunging to the ground.
