- Can you explain the difference between how we pronounce /l/ and /r/?
- /l/ is formed with the tip of the tongue in the same position as /n/, /t/, and /d/.
- The sides of the tongue do not touch the sides of your mouth, as they do for /d/
- /r/ is the “opposite”: the sides of the tongue touch the sides of your mouth, but the tip doesn’t
- (The tip of the tongue is curved back into the mouth for /r/.)
- - Another difference for /r/ is that the lips are usually rounded when we say it, like for /w/.
- ---
- right / light
- wrong / long
- ---
- Three flee from three free thin tin-finned fish.
- A fleet athleet won the marathon.
- ---
- /t/ and /d/ are flapped if they occor after a vowel and before an unstressed vowel.
- A fleet athleet - the ‘t’ in “fleet” is not flapped.
- A fleet of ships - the ‘t’ in “fleet” is flapped.
