Jaws- Plucking Leg

All at once, 10 feet from the boat, he felt a bump
and a. firm, decisive. grasp on his left femur, some
three inches above his knee. It was surprising, but
not at all violent. His first thought was that his
partner had somehow survived, caught up with
him from below, and plucked his thigh for atten-
tion. He dipped his mask, looking down.

He was amazed to see half a human leg, swathed
in neoprene, tumbling into the depths. He observed
that, though fully detached from the upper femur
at the superpatellar bursa, it exhibited little bleed-
ing from its own portion of the femoral artery,
though a cloud of blood from somewhere else was
forming quickly. Whoever had amputated had per-
formed neatly: the skin along the incision was
scalpel-clean.
