	The movie begins with Ted Kramer achieving a big promotion at work. Ted comes home to find his wife, Joanna, leaving him and their child Billy. Joanna was primarily a housewife. With Joanna gone, Ted is having a hard time raising billy while focusing on his new job, which demands a high level of attention. After many difficult months their house is in a state of harmony.  Billy and Ted are getting along fine and Ted has learned to take care of Billy.


	 Joanna comes back to New York after being absent for 15 months. When Joanna arrives, she starts watching Billy from afar and soon asks Ted for custody of their child, Billy. Ted refuses to give Joanna custody of Billy, and so a court case ensues. As soon as the case starts, Ted gets fired from work due to mishandling one of his responsibilities. Ted is forced to take up a lower paying job that he is over qualified for in order to strengthen his argument in court. Joanna, however, ends up winning the court case. Ted refuses to appeal to higher courts because it would require Billy testifying, and he is not willing to put Billy through the stress of a testimony. When Joanna comes to pick Billy up, she realizes the Billy is already at home. So, instead of Joanna taking Billy to her house, she resumes living with Ted and Billy as a family.
