- Topic / Main Idea questions (begins on p. 197) - sometimes called gist questions
- - CD1.1 - What is the subject of the conversation?
- The conversation is not about the course in general (that’s too general).
- The conversation is not about one book (that’s too specific).
- On p. 197 there are other options. It’s about a political science class, not a political organization or a physical science class.
- The topic is the noun phrase that describes the subject of a lecture or conversation.
- The main idea is what the speaker says about that topic.
- ---
- p. 199 describes possible reasons an answer is wrong. Irrelevant answers usually include some of the same words as the correct topic or main idea.
- ---
- Take notes on another piece of paper. (You generally shouldn’t need many notes to correctly answer main idea questions, but it’s good to practice anyway.)

- Reading Test (DELTA Test 1)
- For time management, you shouldn’t carefully read the whole passage before answering any questions
- 1 skim the passage to get an idea of what it’s about
- 2 read the questions (maybe answer the ones you can answer without reading the whole passage)
- 3 read the passage to look for specific answers to the remaining questions
- (4 guess the answer to remaining questions before the time runs out)
