- ⊱Personality: Iseul is very naive and idealistic. She is so optimistic, that it gets to a point where she ignored bad news. In order to stay happy, she has placed her trust in abstract concepts and superstitions. She loves to have fun and is known by the staff to be a little mischievous. Being hospitalized has not dampened her spirit and she greets newcomers with bright smiles and a handkerchief. Her idea of a good time in talking and laughing with someone while doing some sort of non-athletic activity, such as crafting. Her peers often describe her as the kind of person you would turn to when you need to feel normal and just have a good time. She doesn’t think of herself as “Iseul, the girl with leukemia” and doesn’t see others as “_____ the person with _____”. Because of this, a lot of people gravitate towards her. She craves normalcy and it secretly bitter that she has missed out on a lot of classic teenage experiences. So, she tries to recreate them as best as possible in the peds wing.

- ⊱Backstory: When she was thirteen years old, she decided she wanted to play soccer, since many of her friends were joining. However, she started having major trouble exercising. She would be short of breath and dizzy, complaining of pain in her joints. One night, she started running a fever too. Her grandmother, who is easily scared by illness, took her to the hospital. There they were able to diagnose her and get her started on the treatment. However, the leukemia has continued to spread and she can continued to display symptoms.

Her lymph nodes will swell occasionally and. She nose bleeds often, especially in the winter or in the morning when it is cold and dry. Also, she will often run a fever.

- ⊱Severity: Her disease is very serious. Although she is undergoing treatment, her leukemia is very persistent and her doctors worry about her body loosing its ability to fight off infections, which could cause her to die. There is also fear that the leukemia will spread to her brain.

She believes that if she was going to die, she would have already so she will probably survive. She stays hopeful by folding paper cranes. While in the hospital she read about Sadako Sasaki and thought that if she kept folding paper cranes it would keep her alive. She has surpassed 1,000 so she thinks she will live. She still wants to reach a goal of making 1,000 within a whole year by herself, since she thinks then maybe she will be cured.

- Jeno is a very quiet person who doesn’t socialize much with others. He is relatively new to the peds wing so he is still apprehensive towards making friends. Slightly morbid, he doesn’t want to befriend people if they could die, or be released and never see him again. However, once he becomes friends with someone, it can be hard to get him to shut up. He will make tons of jokes in an attempt to lighten what he calls: the dreary hospital mood that permeates our lives.

- At first the two of them are just casual friends. Jeno is still apprehensive about becoming close with anyone and he sees Iseul first as a girl with Leukemia instead of who she is as a person. Eventually, the two of them become closer and Iseul teaches him to not think so much about their medical conditions and just focus of building friendships and being happy. As their friendship develops, they slowly start falling for each other. However, at the same time Iseul’s condition starts to worsen. While the start caring more and more for each other her, the universe is not on their side. Their story ends with them in love.

Iseul’s leukemia spreads to her brain and her she beings to develop even more symptoms such as headaches, vomiting, and blurred vision. Her body becomes unable to fight off infections and she passes away in the night.
