Scientists, Doctors, and Crooks, oh my!

A group of "scientists," who probably took time out from denying global warming, in addition to sleazeoid science writer Simon Singh, have formed an organization called "Sense About Science," dedicated to convincing us that sugary soft drinks don't cause obesity and disease. By an amazing coincidence their million dollar "donor" is the Coca Cola company. They're even denying a massive study of 260,000 people, showing the danger of sugar, by Tufts University. Next, I suppose a "donation" to Tufts will be the next attempt to shutter the study. Let's hope Tufts takes the high road.

Also, Big Pharma gave nearly five billion dollars in "considerations" to doctors last year. (I worked for a doctor who told me about those long ago.) So if your doctor prescribes the fifty dollar pill that has bad side effects instead of the older and just as effective fifty cent pill that doesn't, you'll know why.

Reminds me of a dentist in Mass who did things I found were unnecessary, that later caused me trouble and expense. The moral is, if you are going to undergo an expensive or dangerous procedure or drug regimen, search the net and get second opinions. Then, remembering those "considerations," make your Own decision.

A good magazine about this is What Your Doctor Doesn't Tell You. It's hard to find on stands since Sense About Science is also working to ban it. But they have a website at wyddty.com . No, they're not science illiterates or newage nuts. They're just countering the propaganda.
