  1. >It's been a week and Lulu is still in the hospital
  2. >the doctors said that she's not healing as quickly as she should due to her poor eating habits
  3. >namely that she doesn't eat at all if she doesn't see you
  4. >regardless you visit her every day
  5. >she's looking better, she can sit up and she doesn't need a machine to help her breathe anymore
  6. >the bullet that hit her pierced one of her lungs, the doctors say that she would have died on the street if you didn't help her
  7. >that's a small comfort
  8. >as soon as she's well enough to leave she'll just end up back on the street
  9. >next time she'll likely end up in the morgue instead of the hospital
  10. >that just makes you angry
  11. >you want to do something for her, but you don't know what
  12. >you walk in to Lulu's room
  13. >she looks at you and smiles
  14. "Hey. How are you feeling?"
  15. "Better"
  16. >you sit down next to her bed and think
  17. >you've never felt this way about anyone before
  18. >you want to do everything you can to make her happy and keep her safe
  19. >when you saw her hit the ground it was like someone tore out your heart
  20. >is this what love feels like?
  21. >as you stew in your thoughts it finally hits you
  22. >you have no idea why you didn't do this in the first place
  23. "Lulu?"
  24. "Yeah"
  25. "When you get out of the hospital, do you want to come live with me?"
  26. >the silence lasts only a few seconds, but it feels like an eternity
  27. >her eyes widen and glisten with tears
  28. >she wipes her eyes
  29. "Do you really want me to?"
  30. >you don't hesitate to answer
  31. "I love you. I have since the day I met you. All I want is for you to be happy. I don't have much, but I promise I'll do everything I can to give you the life you deserve."
  32. >this time she doesn't try to stop her tears
  33. "Okay"
  34. >you hug her tighter than you ever have
  35. "I've got to get some things ready, but I'll be back. I promise."
  36. >you leave her room in a state of elation
  37. >now that this is happening, you have some people to call
  38. >it's not a call you're looking forward to
  39.
  40. --
  41.
  42. >you haven't spoken to your parents in years
  43. >the last time you saw them they made it clear they didn't want to see you again
  44. >if not for the present circumstances you'd never even think of calling them
  45. >no better time to tear off this band-aid
  46. >an older sounding man picks up on the other end
  47. "Hello?"
  48. "Hey dad, it's Anon."
  49. >there's a short pause
  50. "Hello?"
  51. "I don't want to talk to you"
  52. "I know. I wouldn't call if it wasn't important."
  53. "Let me guess, you need two thousand dollars or they're going to break your legs. I'm not giving you any more money just so it can go up your nose."
  54. >you groan. It's not surprising at all that he still holds that against you
  55. "I don't do that anymore. Look, I need money for my kid."
  56. >you hear something break over the phone
  57. "What?"
  58. >you explain to him everything that's happened so far
  59. "I see. that certainly is an interesting story."
  60. "So will you wire me some money?"
  61. "I'll send you the money, if only to ensure that child turns out better than you did."
  62. >your father wasn't one to mince words
  63. >but money is money
  64. "Thanks"
  65. >that's one hurdle cleared
  66. >now you need to take care of something else
  67. >you haven't shown up for work in three days, so you've almost certainly been fired
  68. >which means you need to find a new job
  69. >putting that in the back of your mind you decide to head home
  70. >you crawl into bed, the day's events still replaying in your head
  71. >when you wake up, you'll be a father
  72. >you still can't wrap your head around that
  73.
  74. --
  75.
  76. >you spend the entire day getting things ready
  77. >you buy clothes, food, toys, a bed, anything you think she would need
  78. >once you've got it all in your apartment you go back to the hospital
  79. >Lulu is finally well enough to leave
  80. >she runs up to you and hugs you
  81. "Let's go home"
  82. >once you're back home you cook dinner
  83. >it's the first time in a while you've cooked with something other than a microwave
  84. >still, it turns out better than expected
  85. "How is it?"
  86. >she takes a bite, her face lights up
  87. "So good. This is the best meal I've ever had."
  88. >even though that isn't a high bar to clear you still feel proud
  89. "Alright. It's about time for bed."
  90. >you take her to her room
  91. >she flops down on the bed
  92. "It's so soft."
  93. "Glad you like it. Goodnight."
  94. >you go to your room and go to bed
  95. >a few hours later you're woken up by someone walking your room
  96. >Lulu silently crawls into your bed
  97. "Bad dream?"
  98. >she nods
  99. "Don't worry, I'm right here."
  100. >she falls asleep, the whole time she doesn't stop shaking
  101. >you're not surprised, most grown adults were never the same after something like that happened to them
  102. >you couldn't imagine what she must be going through
  103. >you pull her close and hold her
  104. >she stops shaking and sleeps peacefully
  105. "Don't worry, I've got you"
  106. >that was the first night, the night you two became a family
  107. >what started as a chance encounter between two strangers ended with their lives bound to one another
  108. >all the hardships the two of you endured were all worth it in the end
  109. >neither of you would ever be alone again
  110.
  111. --
  112.
  113. >you can't believe this day has come
  114. >so much time passed without you noticing
  115. >this might be the happiest day of your life
  116. "Okay Lulu, smile"
  117. >Lulu looks incredibly embarrassed
  118. "Come on, can't you be cool?"
  119. "Nope. This is one of two times where I get to be as uncool as I want, you're just gonna have to deal with it."
  120. >you snap picture after picture
  121. >once you're done she groans and goes off to join her friends
  122. >she only acts like this around them, but that doesn't bother you
  123. >nothing could possibly bring you down today
  124. >today's the day you get to see your little girl graduate high school
  125. >it's amazing how she went from a low C student to graduating high school with honors
  126. >she's already gotten a scholarship to a good college so you don't have to worry about tuition
  127. >you take your seat in the stands, you're the only human attending
  128. >after multiple speeches from the students and staff it was finally time to hand out the diplomas
  129. >you wait for your chance
  130. >finally it comes
  131. >the principal calls out her name
  132. "Lucille Mayberry"
  133. >you jump up
  134. "WOOOOOOO. THAT'S MY BABY!"
  135. >you shout at the top of your lungs
  136. >Lulu grabs her diploma and rushes off the stage
  137. >the other parents are glaring at you, but you don't care
  138. >once the ceremony is over you find Lulu outside and run to her
  139. >ignoring her protests you wrap your arms around her and spin her around
  140. "Lulu?"
  141. "What is it?
  142. "I'm so proud of you."
  143. "Thanks, dad."
  144.
  145. --
  146.
  147. >it's been years now
  148. >you're old and retired
  149. >the city tore down the project years ago, but with the money you had saved up you were able to move to a nice, quiet suburb
  150. >you're glad you're not in the ghetto anymore, but you find yourself aching for something to do
  151. >you hear a knock at the door
  152. >when you open it you see a group of dogs, a woman, a man, and two young boys
  153. >you haven't seen them in years, but it feels like only yesterday
  154. "Hello, it's good to see you all again"
  155. >Lulu smiles at you
  156. "Hi dad. Can we come in"
  157. >you laugh
  158. "My door's always open for you."
  159. >the last time you saw her was the day she got married
  160. >you've been keeping in contact with her, but this is the first time she's ever come to visit
  161. >her two kids run to the backyard and play while Lulu and her husband join you in the living room
  162. "So, how have you two been?"
  163. "It's been wonderful. The new trauma center has already saved so many people."
  164. >Lulu and her husband Ron were both doctors, they met in college
  165. >things in the city never got any better, but at least with the new trauma center there's a chance more people can be saved
  166. >Lulu's ears perk up and she gets an angry look on her face
  167. "Those two better not be fighting again"
  168. >she storms off to the backyard
  169. >after she's gone Ron looks at you
  170. "Can I ask you something?"
  171. "What?"
  172. "A human raising an anthro, how does that happen? I tried asking Lucille but she won't tell me anything."
  173. >you sigh
  174. "It's a long story, but what the hell?"
  175. >you tell him the long, sad story
  176. >about the man who had given up on his future
  177. >about the girl who had given up on living
  178. >how they ended up coming together
  179. >and how they saved each other
