48. An underlying plot exists in this movie of Susan growing not just in size but in confidence. The movie begins with Susan going along with her fiancé because he has a decent job and from what she can tell, he cares for her. Throughout the movie, Susan realizes that she doesn't need to stand in a man's shadow and that she is her own strong, independent woman.
 49. When a meteorite from outer space hits a young California woman named Susan Murphy and turns her into a giant monster, she is taken to a secret government compound where she meets a ragtag group of monsters also rounded up over the years. As a last resort, under the guidance of General W.R. Monger, on a desperate order from The President, the motley crew of Monsters is called into action to combat the aliens and save the world from imminent destruction!
 50. Monsters Vs. Aliens has some really funny moments, but by the time you get to see them on the big screen you've already seen them plenty of times on the small one. So there's not too much left to offer by buying a ticket. I thought the 3D was OK. They have a couple of moments specifically designed around flexing the 3d capabilities, but again nothing mind-blowing.

The story revolves around the gigantic Susan (Reese Witherspoon) while pushing all the more interesting characters out of the spotlight. Susan is someone we've all seen in movies before. The victim of an unfortunate mishap leading her down a path she would rather not go down. So the plot follows the same course from there, feels pretty routine. Focusing more on the three other monsters would have made this a better movie. They're much more interesting and only get a small handful of moments to shine throughout the picture.

That was probably the biggest letdown. Having some great comedic potential in the characters voiced by Hugh Laurie, and Will Arnett take a back seat ride. No complaints about Seth Rogen's B.O.B. though, he was great. Kiefer Sutherland was surprisingly good as the General. I underestimated his vocal range.

Finally they made a big deal about Stephen Colbert playing the President, and there wasn't enough of him. All of his funny moments, except for the scene after some of the credits, saturated the coming attractions and commercials. I would have liked to see more of his character.

Overall, its enjoyable. I like to see elements of classic old genres (like the classic monster movies of the 50's and 60's) brought to life in modern day CGI. I just thought this movie had more up its sleeve than it was showing me.
 51. I had seen this first in theaters in 3d. This was the one of the first 3d movies I had seen with the whole glasses deal and stuff. And really, the 3d wasn't as amazing as it could have been. I can recall two specific parts where the 3d was in use, one right at the beginning of the movie with the ping pong ball paddle, the other later on when the alien is having coffee or something and the fork floats in the air. There may have been a third but I can't specifically remember. Which is basically what I'm trying to say, the 3d wasn't good enough.

The story was okay, and comical enough to keep me entertained, however I still wish they could have worked a bit better on the plot. I mean, why date and try to marry some guy who in the end is a jerk? All of that work for nothing. And then there's the comical Government which steps in and tries to take care of things because they know better than us.

Overall the movie was good. It was one of the better dreamworks movies compared to some of the stuff they've made. It could have been better, but it could have been worse. 7/10.
 52. Monsters vs. Aliens suffers from the common 3D problems: dim lighting, poor focus in fast-paced action sequences, and too many distractions for the movie to grab the viewer.
 53. Susan Murphy (voice of (Reese Witherspoon) is changed into a giantess when she is hit by a meteor containing a substance called quantonium. She is sent by the government to live with a group of monsters, all of whom are shunned on Earth. When the Earth is attacked by an alien, however, the President of the United States sends the monsters on a mission to fight the alien and save the Earth. A photo of Susan and some of her monster friends can be viewed here. No reason was given in the movie, so viewers have suggested a variety of reasons. Some think it's because a small amount of quantonium still remained in her body. Others suggest that the quantonium permanently damaged her hair's pigment, perhaps due to the stress it had on her body. Another possibility is because it was meant to show that she wasn't done with being a monster. Still others suggest that, although her old hair stayed white, new hair might grow out brown at the roots. If you enjoyed Monsters vs Aliens, you may wish to take a look at some of Dreamworks' previous animated films.
