  6. I'm half asleep/awake and so the point I made about "advertising" having changed on us "like mobile phones have changed on us" may not have been clear (and I worded it a bit awkwardly).

  8. Mobile phones started out purely to enable people to call each other. That was their exclusive purpose and it seemed like forever before they could also send/receive text messages.

  10. (I know this because I got one that could send/receive text messages but there was no one for me to send text messages to!)

  14. Yet the *concept* of "phone calls" has stuck *even though* making calls is now just a small function of *that "device"*.

  18. To give another example think about the humble "monitor" (VDUs / "Video Display Units"). Can you not foresee a similar thing happening with "monitors" as with "mobile phones"?

  22. In the beginning a "monitor" could only display information. That's nothing to fear! These days a modern "monitor" can send and receive information. That's a bit more worrying.

  26. Why wait - let's just call them "tele-screens"!

  28. How is it not the case that the lie system is implementing these concepts - these things - over multiple generations? How is it not the case that words with multiple meanings are given an innocent introduction - only to have their role/meaning changed later - to something that this generation would consider not so innocent!

  30. Today you can opt out of a "monitor" that monitors you. Though you may have to walk past one that does. In time you may not be able to get a "monitor" that does not monitor you! Just as you struggle to find a mobile phone that *only* makes/receives calls.

  32. And that is my point about "advertising". Its meaning seems to have changed on us - but the original "concept" has stuck.

  34. I have seen a lot of "ads" for things but made very few purchases as a result. *Am I really watching "advertising" or am I watching something else completely but don't think twice about it _because I have been trained to think of it is merely "advertising"_*?!
