Linda- Cloaked Elites

Without even waiting to see if Roselle had complied, Linda fired. Two heartbeats later, the Elite’s armor flickered into view as her sniper rifle’s large round blew the front out of the alien’s torso armor.

Linda followed the priority arrow toward her next target and set the aiming reticle just to the right of a dodging blur. The range was only eight hundred meters this time, and it took the round only one heartbeat to arrive.
...
She switched to her next target and glimpsed a blur diving behind a low outcropping of shale. She put a round in four centimeters from the edge, drawing a spray of stone flakes. An Elite with a fist-size hole in his backplate rose and staggered away. A few centimeters of brittle shale was not much protection from firepower that could punch through a meter-thick concrete wall.

Linda followed the priority arrow to her last target. He was motionless, so she could not see his camouflage-blur—even when she looked directly at him.

But then she noticed the forks of a beam rifle emitter nozzle protruding from the uphill side of a talus heap. It was not pointed quite in her direction, so she set her targeting reticle about a meter back from the muzzle and fired. It was always good to know the specs of the enemy’s weapons.

The range was only five hundred meters, almost point-blank for an SRS99, but this time Linda could only assume that her attack was fatal. No sooner had she pulled the trigger than particle beams began to drill through stone all around her.
