+Surfpurzel __ I asked you whether you were aware of what the flat Earth folk had to say about the *routine* phenomenon of lunar eclipses (for surely that's a "gotcha!"). You admitted that you did not know.

*You are assuming that there can be no alternate explanations that are sound*. (Keep in mind that an explanation can be sound yet also false.)

It is often the case that there is a phenomenon and there are two contradictory (but sound) explanations for it. *If one is correct then the other must necessarily be false*.

As you sit in your living room how can you know which is the correct explanation? You can't without *assuming the conclusion* and *trusting* the people who are giving you the explanation *that conforms to your pre-existing belief-bias*.

What verifies the explanation? _A genuine photo_.

We all grew up believing the Earth is a ball. *Even the most vocal flat Earth advocate - deep down - believes the Earth is a ball* (it's just they won't ever admit it).

We all grew up believing this because *we trusted adults would not lie to us* and we were *shown photos which we accepted at the time as genuine* - not realising until later that they were merely *visual representations* (no matter how accurate to reality they may be).

This belief was put into our heads as children.

The explanation you are giving can certainly *seem to be the case* but without a genuine image as I mentioned above *TO VERIFY IT* you cannot know with *complete certainty* that it is the *only* (true) explanation. You can be 99.99999999999999% confident - but that is *not* certainty.

I don't doubt for a second that you are 99.999999999999999999% confident you are correct. But in the absence of sufficient proof you are lying to yourself if you believe it's 100%. You are accepting (and mistaking) proof's appearances for [actual] proof.

The explanation you have given *fits what we can observe*. At the same time there are flat Earth explanations *that also fit what we can observe* (but you wouldn't know about that *because you have not genuinely searched for alternate explanations*).

The flat Earth explanation does not require belief in anything more outrageous than what "ball Earth astronomers" and "astrophysicists" would routinely have you believe.

If "astrophysicists" are permitted to "make sh!t up" about the universe and talk about "theoretical concepts" as though they are certainties *then why can't the flat Earth folk do so as well*? _You need to be *consistent*_.

You are preferring one explanation over another because it *feels* right to you. It *feels* like the Earth is a ball. You see a ship *appear* to go over the horizon - so the Earth *must* be a ball. You read somewhere that "the law of perspective got debunked" and you take it as a fact about reality. It's easy for you to *accept* the ball Earth explanations as true. It is easy for you to *imagine* they are true. Therefore *your belief naturally follows*.

_And maybe it is true_.

But if it *is* true - it isn't for the reasons you've given. *For that a genuine photo is required*.

It's not good enough to believe "Big Foot" exists merely because you have found fur, droppings and large foot prints. It is not good enough to say "all the available 'evidence' points to 'Big Foot'". You need a photo for that kind of claim. _Pics or it didn't happen_.

Since this can go nowhere. *Since you haven't the first clue what I am talking about* - let me see if I can ask you something you might agree with:

*Would you not agree that a genuine photo of the Earth from space - showing the entirety of its shape - and where that photo upon scrutiny remained distinguishable from CGI - would settle this "flat vs ball" dispute categorically and with permanent finality*?

Would not a genuine photo of the Earth from space - one free from any potential shenanigans - put this entire topic to bed?
