  1. >you were once called anonymous
  2. >your name once carried great weight behind it
  3. >once, you were a loyal son of a distant empire
  4. >the personal champion to the empress
  5. >your skill with dual blades was unrivaled
  6. >but that was before the great betrayal
  7. >a story for a later time
  8. >now, scorned and exiled, you have no banner to march under, no ruler to have your fealty, no land to call home
  9. >which is why you now find yourself living the life of a wanderer
  10. >never staying in one place for too long, the fear of your identity being uncovered ever lingers
  11. >the only companions you have now are your blades and the hooded cloak you now don, merely an extra precaution to keeping your identity concealed
  12. >but while in a small town, you overhear talk of another region, beyond the empire's reach or influence
  13. >a region called Equestria
  14. >a strange name, but you see the bigger picture
  15. >this could be your chance to start over
  16. >to finally put your past behind you and make the best of the hand that cruel fate has dealt you
  17. >in truth you are quite hesitant
  18. >there is no telling what this new kingdom will have to offer
  19. >for all you know, it could be a more hostile place than the empire
  20. >but you finally decide to take that chance, after all, anything is better than going…back there
  21. >crickets begin to chirp, a sure sign that the day is coming to an end
  22. >it has not been all that long since you crossed over into Equestria
  23. >but regardless, old habits die hard and you still prefer to operate during the night
  24. >a few joints crack as you pull yourself off the ground you were napping on
  25. >there is a village up ahead, you had scouted it last night but were unsure whether or not you should approach it
  26. >but once again you are confronted by the possibility of making a new life for yourself, so throwing a bit of caution tot he wind, tonight is the night you begin discovering this new land
  27. >the road to the village, to your relief, has little to no traffic and is dimly lit, only a few lanterns dotted along the way
  28. >being unable to shake the feeling of reluctance, you pull your hood up slightly when the village comes into view
  29. >it's small by the standards you're accustomed to. but that isn't necessarily a bad thing
  30. >despite the fact that the sun has gone down, there are still some citizens who remain active
  31. >they throw quizzical glances your way, but make no move towards you
  32. >but after some time spent wandering the streets, you find what you're looking for, an inn
  33. >the gray mare, as the sign above the door would indicate
  34. "Finally," you think to yourself, "Somewhere I can stay that isn't covered in moss and twigs"
  35. >the door to the inn creaks quietly as you push it open
  36. >but inside is far from what you expected
  37. >a warm scene plays out in front of you
  38. >the innkeeper in the middle of some riveting tale that has some patrons enthralled
  39. >others knocking back drinks and singing, you even see others playing various games
  40. >you had not known much of this back in the empire
  41. >but as any traveler would tell you, inns are the best places to gather information, and information is what you are in desperate need of
  42. >giving the place a good once over, scanning for possible threats, you make your way over to the bar and finally take a stool on the far end
  43. >the innkeeper finishes his story to resounding cheers from the listening patrons
  44. >when he finally makes his way over to you, you just ask him to bring you whatever everyone else was drinking
  45. >but you almost drop it in mid sip when a loud voice rings in your ear
  46. >"Well hiya there stranger!" the voice is female, with an energetic and bubbly tone
  47. >you have to stop yourself from wheeling around and drawing a weapon
  48. >but she continues, "I can tell you're a stranger cuz I know eeevvveerrybody who lives around here and you see we don't get many travelers either so i saw you and didn't recognize you so i just had to come up and say hello!"
  49. >her outgoing nature stuns you momentarily
  50. "That was quite a greeting" you reply, taking another swig
  51. "But…you're right, i'm not exactly from around here. Actually i'm new to this kingdom."
  52. >her eyes widen
  53. >apparently she really meant it when she said they don't get many travelers
  54. >her eyes widen and a smile spreads across her face
  55. >she tugs lightly on your arm which causes your muscles to tense
  56. >"Well then you should definitely come with me! I can show you around and you can meet my friends so i can throw you a welcome to Equestria party!"
  57. >just as the pink haired girl's rant appears to be kicking off, another girl quickly walks over and holds her off of you
  58. >"I'm so sorry about that, Pinkie can be a little too outgoing. I hope she wasn't troubling you."
  59. >her demeanor is much more calm and level than her pink haired friend
  60. >but it isn't like she did any harm
  61. "No trouble at all ma'am." you reply from behind your hood, "I'm just not accustomed to such a…friendly attitude."
  62. >the new girl giggles a bit
  63. >"Pinkie takes some getting used to. But are you really new to the kingdom?"
  64. >your anxiety begins to build, you were hoping to be able to just speak with the innkeeper or maybe a lone patron
  65. "Yes…I am. A traveler in a new land, one that i'm hoping to learn more about."
  66. >an effort to keep the conversation away from yourself
  67. >but the pink haired girl speaks up again
  68. >"Well lucky ducky, you came to the right place. Twilight here can probably tell you aaaalllll you need to know!"
  69. >Twilight looks at you sheepishly
  70. >but apparently this Twilight is some kind of local expert, just the kind of resource you are looking for
  71. >so you decide to start with a simple question
  72. "Well Miss Twilight, who exactly rules over these lands?"
  73. >she snaps out of her awkward stance
  74. >"Well that's easy. Equestria is ruled by two sisters, or rather two goddesses." she begins
  75. >you can feel an eyebrow raise, but she has your attention, so you turn slightly to face her
  76. >"Princess Celestia and Princess Luna. Celestia is associated with the sun and presides over the kingdom during the day. Princess Luna is associated with the moon and presides over the kingdom during the night."
  77. >a kingdom ruled by goddesses, sisters even
  78. >your desire to know more intensifies
  79. "Which one has more authority?" you ask, believing it to be a simple question
  80. >but pinkie and twilight give you a confused look
  81. >"Um, neither actually," she replies. "The sisters stand as equals, and their powerful magic helps keep Equestria in balance."
  82. >magic, while not a completely foreign concept to you, is something that you have not encountered often
  83. >this place seems friendly enough, after all, they welcomed a blatant outsider
  84. "Does Equestria have enemies? Which of the two sisters leads the armies against them?"
  85. >another seemingly simple inquiry that is greeted by another round of incredulous looks
  86. >"Well traveler…" Twilight begins
  87. >"We don't have many enemies. Most of our forces go towards protecting the interior of the kingdom. We're not exactly built on conquest or war. We don't really interact with other kingdoms"
  88. >you tilt your head slightly to the side, this place is appearing more and more strange by the minute
  89. >pinkie, who had been relatively quiet during this impromptu Q&A, now seems to have something on her mind
  90. >"You're not used to a friendly attitude? That's terrible mr stranger guy, and you look so confused about how things work around here. So where are you from? Hmmmmm?"
  91. >she stares directly at you and leans in closer for added effect
  92. >you look to Twilight, but she too seems to be curious
  93. >but since they don't have much contact with strangers, you finally lower your hood to reveal your face, and to speak to them directly
  94. "…if you must know…i'm from Latria."
  95. >Pinkie stares blankly, but it's Twilight's eyes that widen this time
  96. >"The northern empire??" she gasps
  97. >other patrons were beginning to look over at the bar, which makes you extremely nervous
  98. "Yes, now please keep it down."
  99. >you put a finger to your mouth for emphasis
  100. >she blushes a bit and nods
  101. >"Well that would certainly explain a lot." she finally replies
  102. >"Equestria will be quite a change of pace from a militarized empire."
  103. >you merely nod in agreement, that fact is already being made apparent
  104. >how fortunate that you would stumble upon a helpful stranger, let alone one who was willing to give information about her homeland
  105. >when you stand up to buy another drink, pinkie gasps again
  106. >you quickly discover it is because the swords hidden under your cloak are momentarily revealed
  107. >you sit back down and apologize
  108. "I don't go anywhere without them…better safe than sorry."
  109. >Twilight gives you an understanding look and quickly adds
  110. >"Pinkie, he's from a more violent place than here."
  111. >but she seems to examine you more closely
  112. >"From the looks of him i'd say he's probably a soldier, or a bodyguard"
  113. >not intending to be rude, you accidentally cut her off
  114. "How do you know all of this?" you ask a bit irritated
  115. >"Well that's easy!" Pinkie interjects, "Twilight's a big bookworm, she knows lots of stuff, and it helps when you're princess celestia's student"
  116. >Twilight nearly knocks Pinkie over trying to get her to be quiet
  117. >"Pinkie!! That doesn't need to be announced!"
  118. >she now wants to get the subject off of herself, so she turns to you again
  119. >"Soo..umm…who are you exactly? and what brings you here?"
  120. >the questions you were dreading
  121. "I'm a traveler…a former soldier just like you said. Hoping to make a new start."
  122. >you're not lying, more like leaving out certain large truths
  123. >"Wow," she replied, "We don't get instances like this, especially from someone like you."
  124. >she seems to mull this fact over for a bit
  125. >"The princesses would know how to handle this. I'll write to th-"
  126. >the situation has swiftly gone from helpful to harmful
  127. "That won't be necessary." you interject a bit too quickly
  128. >another round of confused looks from twilight and pinkie
  129. >"Why not? Equestria is a rather isolated kingdom, and i'm sure they'd enjoy the opportunity to speak with someone like you."
  130. >you desperately try to form a response
  131. "Well they're goddesses are they not? I'm sure they have far more pressing matters to attend to than speak with some unimportant wanderer."
  132. >but that doesn't get you off the hook, if anything, it seems to lightly annoy twilight
  133. >"The last time a stranger came to this kingdom was almost two centuries ago. You're from an empire Equestria has had almost no contact with, and judging by your overall appearance, you've seen a good amount of violence"
  134. >damn this girl and her intellect
  135. >you can try to run away, but that will look suspicious
  136. "I wish to just blend in and go unnoticed" you reply in an exasperated tone
  137. >but now the two of them just look disappointed
  138. >"Don't you wanna make any friends mister hooded guy?" pinkie asks dejectedly
  139. "Friends?" you repeat, a bit confused. "Friends weren't exactly a luxury I could afford where I came from. Even now I travel alone, usually at night."
  140. >you don't even know why you're telling them this much
  141. >but suddenly, Twilight's face lights up, as if she had a stroke of brilliance
  142. >she runs back to one of the tables and returns with a sheet of parchment, and with an old fashioned quill, starts writing
  143. >But Pinkie unexpectedly wraps her arms around you in a hug
  144. >"Couldn't afford to have friends? That's super duper sad. I'll be your friend!"
  145. >you almost smile at her kindness, but you aren't sure if you should
  146. >but you snap out of it as you hear a soft popping sound
  147. >twilight is now smiling, but the parchment is nowhere to be found
  148. "What was that?" you ask nervously
  149. >"that was the sound of me sending a letter, to princess Luna."
  150. >you can feel panic slowly setting in, this is hardly keeping a low profile
  151. >this isn't at all how you planned for this to turn out
  152. >instead of a more discreet life here, you now afce the possibility of being confronted by one of this kingdom's rulers…a goddess
  153. >seeing your distress, twilight puts a hand on your shoulder, again making your muscles tense
  154. >"You shouldn't be so scared..umm"
  155. >she's trying again to coax a name out of you again
  156. >this time you cave
  157. "You can just call me anon."
  158. >"You shouldn't be so scared anon. This place isn't like where you come from. Please just trust me."
  159. >Pinkie smiles in agreement with her and gives you another hug
  160. >so you sigh heavily and take a long draft from your mug before setting it down again
  161. "It would seem I no longer have a choice."
  162. >twilight told you that now she just needs to wait for a response, which according to her, would not take long
  163. >she was telling the truth, because after another round of drinks, another pop can be heard
  164. >before you can ask, Twilight is opening a letter, this one sealed with a crescent moon
  165. >you want to ask how exactly that happened so quickly, but magic cannot be easily explained
  166. >Twilight smiles brightly after she finishes reading
  167. >she hands the letter over to you
  168. >"Dear Twilight Sparkle,
  169. We are most grateful to you for bringing such a matter to our attention. A traveler here for the first time in 200 years is indeed an odd but exciting occurrence. But we must discern whether or not this stranger presents a threat. From what you have told us of him, we shall want to personally see to this matter. Please await our arrival at the inn."
  170. >she is coming here? personally?
  171. >now you're really beginning to panic
  172. >but again, twilight asks you to trust her
  173. >in a fit of apprehension, you pull your hood up and attempt to leave
  174. >but after another series of pops, you are now disoriented and on the ground
  175. >no longer are you in the comfort of the inn either
  176. >all you can make out is an open field bathed in moonlight…and who can only be princess luna standing over you
  177. >your mind feels almost foggy
  178. >one moment you were sitting at the inn, now you don't know exactly where you are
  179. >after what may have been only a few moments, someone is helping you to your feet
  180. >you give yourself a quick thump to the head to try and regain your composure
  181. >twilight and pinkie look excited and also a bit nervous
  182. >you quickly remember who is standing over you
  183. "You must be Princess Luna." you finally speak up
  184. >the princess is staring at you, as if you are under heavy scrutiny, but her face is not stern or hostile
  185. >she simply nods
  186. >you aren't sure if it's just from force of habit, but you draw one of your blades from its sheath, sink down to one knee and lightly drive the tip into the ground
  187. >"uhhh, what's he doing??" pinkie asks
  188. >"It is a gesture, one used to show respect to royalty." Luna finally spoke
  189. >her voice was more feminine than you expected, her being a ruler and goddess and all, but it certainly carried authority
  190. "Your highness," you begin in an apologetic tone, "I'm terribly sorry you had to be bothered like this, it wasn't supposed to-"
  191. >Luna interrupts your frantic apology by using her magic to lift the hood off from your head
  192. >"It is no bother…anon, correct?"
  193. >you just nod, unsure of what to do at this point
  194. >"It is no bother anon, our curiosity was piqued when twilight sparkle informed us of your arrival here."
  195. >if you weren't afraid of being disrespectful, the agitation would be more visible on your face
  196. >"Your highness…I can assure you I am of no significance. You shouldn't have been bothered, it was my hope to simply settle here and blend in as well as possible."
  197. >But, as seems to be a custom in this kingdom, Luna now gives you a slightly confused look
  198. >she reaches into one of the sleeves of her dress pulls out the letter twilight wrote her and begins to read it again
  199. >you take the opportunity to actually look at her
  200. >A small, black crown adorns her head, her long, dark blue hair almost seems to be flowing of its own accord. Her skin is pale, almost like alabaster, her eyes a sapphire blue. Her dress is a mixture of blue and black, modestly cut and the emblem of a crescent moon rests on her midriff
  201. >she is absolutely beautiful, but in a more classical sense
  202. >but thankfully you manage to avert your gaze just as she puts the letter away
  203. >but this time, Luna's scrutinizing look has slightly softened, replaced by a bit of understanding
  204. >"Twilight informs us that you are a soldier who hails from Latria. You must have been displaced after the coup de etat. Then…you were loyal to the crown?"
  205. >better she think you're just a soldier you suppose
  206. >better she think you're an ordinary soldier you suppose
  207. >you just nod again
  208. >"We have heard stories of the sad fate that has befallen Latria. But to be on your own for that long…and forced to travel by night?"
  209. >her eyes betray a hint of sympathy
  210. "Neither has ever been an issue your highness. You cannot exactly afford many friends in my position…and now that I think about it…I've always rather enjoyed the night. It's always offered respite and peace."
  211. >for the first time during this entire conversation, the goddess' face lights up
  212. >"We are delighted to-"
  213. >she cuts herself off to regain her composure
  214. >"We are glad to hear you enjoy the nighttime anon."
  215. >just as she is about to speak again, you can hear the sound of rapidly approaching footsteps
  216. >Luna looks off in that direction, turns back to you and suddenly vanishes
  217. >and again you decide to forego questioning magic
  218. >you do not have to wait long to discover the source of the footsteps
  219. >four figures slowly step into view, as they draw closer, twilight and pinkie gasp in fear
  220. >"Well well well what do we have here? Three poor souls lost in the dark?" one of them snickers, a able voice, and a scratchy one at that
  221. >"aww why we gotta talk to 'em? lets just get it over with already i'm beat."
  222. >from the sound of them, they weren't exactly friendly
  223. "Who are you?" you yell in their direction
  224. >they all stop bickering simultaneously and glare at you
  225. >"ooohhh not from around here eh? Lemme fill you in. We're the Diamond Dogs, we take what we want, when we want cuz no one's tough enough to get in our way." you guess that one to be the leader
  226. >you take advantage of their talking to analyze them.
  227. >four in all, all of them lightly armored, one unarmed, two wielding a clubs, the other a mace
  228. >you recognize thugs when you see them
  229. >again, unsure if it's just instinct, you step directly in front of twilight and pinkie
  230. >"So give us all ya got or else!" the leader barks
  231. >after the sort of night you have been having, a former imperial champion is not about to be shown up by common bandits
  232. "Or else what?" you reply flatly
  233. >one of them starts laughing
  234. >"or we'll take it"
  235. >the three with weapons immediately draw them and brandish them for dramatic effect
  236. >"Lets just give them what they want, we don't want any trouble" twilight whispers
  237. >you in turn draw one of your two swords
  238. >"Back off, i'm not letting you touch them." you state plainly
  239. >"Or.else.what?" clearly mocking you
  240. >you draw your other sword
  241. >"Anon you can't be serious!?" twilight urges you to reconsider
  242. >you offer one last warning to the thugs, but it falls on deaf ears as the one with the mace charges you
  243. >magic and goddess princesses were foreign to you
  244. >but battle? oh sweet familiarity
  245. >waiting for him to close the gap, he raises his mace and goes for a slow arcing strike
  246. >bad move
  247. >lifting and twisting your left arm, you easily parry the strike
  248. >while he's reeling, you take your other sword and swiftly plunge it into his abdomen
  249. >the other three look stunned, but decide to charge you in unison
  250. >the first one to reach you is unarmed, its simple to make a quick slash at his throat, where his armor is weakest
  251. >the club wielders are a bit more difficult
  252. >the first one brings the club down hard
  253. >crossing your arms and making an x with your blades, you block the strike
  254. >the other one comes at you from the side, but a sharp kick knocks him back
  255. >you lower your blades, take a wide step to the right and a pair of slashes bring one down
  256. >when the other runs at you again, he's met with a roll dodge and a blade in his back
  257. >all four of the diamond dogs lie dead
  258. >Twilight and Pinkie's stares give off both fear and incredulity
  259. >"Well now…it seems there's more to you than meets the eye."
  260. >It was Luna's voice, but you cannot see her
  261. >you feel strange as your arms lower by themselves
  262. >you wheel around
  263. >Luna has reappeared, her arms folded and and an eyebrow raised
  264. >usually when someone has their arms folded, it is not a good sign
  265. >Did you do something wrong? Is she upset with you for killing the Diamond Dogs?
  266. >at this point you would be resigned to any outcome
  267. >things have strayed so far beyond what you had planned
  268. "Your highness please, those bandits were going to-"
  269. >this time, Luna puts a hand on your shoulder
  270. >"Yes, you did kill those men," Luna begins
  271. >"But you also selflessly came to the defense of our subjects. And you also gave them a fair warning AND waited for the attack before acting."
  272. >Luna's hand on your shoulder somehow manages to calm you down
  273. >as if all of the stress you have accumulated lately has just evaporated
  274. >"We needed to discern what manner of threat you posed before proceeding any further. Based on your actions, it is clear to us that you possess honor."
  275. >for the first time tonight, Luna actually smiles at you
  276. >it's a strange feeling, seeing a goddess smile upon you, gaining a degree of approval
  277. >it is a moment that surely would have made your former comrades jealous
  278. >"But we request that you come with us."
  279. "…come with you? But why? you're a princess, i'm just a soldier. You surely have more pressing matters to attend to?"
  280. >despite all of this, you still had hoped to keep your identity under wraps
  281. >"Those bandits you killed, they were the diamond dogs. The most infamous marauders in the region. We doubt very highly that an ordinary soldier could take down four of them at once, especially in…this manner."
  282. "Why would you say that?" you ask weakly
  283. >"Anon, we are immortal. Our reign over these lands has spanned many lifetimes. We can tell when we are not being told the whole story."
  284. >you try to form a rebuttal, but after giving it some thought, you just slump your shoulders in resignation
  285. >you should have known better than to try and pull one over on an immortal ruler
  286. >but you notice that when Luna demanded you come with her, a stunned expression had become glued to their faces
  287. >Twilight and Pinkie are looking at you like you just solved the sphinx's riddle
  288. >Twilight leans over and whispers in your ear
  289. >"Luna never interacts with people like this. She almost always keeps to the castle."
  290. "Why?" you whisper back
  291. >she simply whispers back that it isn't her story to tell
  292. >you look back over to Luna and she is tapping her foot impatiently
  293. "I don't suppose I could convince you that i'm not worth your attention?" you try one last time
  294. >she shakes her head definitively
  295. >"As Twilight had told you, you are the first stranger in this kingdom in 200 years. That in itself makes you worth our time. Besides anon…you pique our curiosity. We wish to know more about you."
  296. >unfortunately your hood is still down, so your face turning light red is most likely visible
  297. >you could swear that you hear Luna stifling a giggle
  298. >you look to Twilight and Pinkie one last time
  299. >Twilight gives you an encouraging wave
  300. >but Pinkie wraps her arms around you
  301. >"go go go anon, i mean how often do you get the chance to hang out with a princess? Just come back sometime okay? I still have to throw you a welcome to Equestria and thanks for saving my life party!"
  302. >they both seem like good people
  303. >ones you wish you knew more of during your old life
  304. >you finally sheath your blades, realizing they were still drawn, pull your hood back up and walk over to the princess
  305. "Lead the way your highness" you state, bowing your head
  306. >Luna smiles again, apparently delighted by the acceptance of her offer
  307. >she stands almost uncomfortably close to you and once again places her hand gently on your shoulder
  308. >"you may wish to close your eyes this time anon"
  309. >at this point you aren't even going to bother questioning things
  310. >so you shut your eyes tightly and wait
  311. >you hear one last pop before everything becomes silent
  312.
  313. >you can no longer inhale the scent of nighttime air
  314. >the sounds of crickets chirping and the soft breeze rolling through the field are gone
  315. >they are replaced by the sounds of distant chatter and of footsteps falling onto stone
  316. >you don't have to be a scholar to deduce that you're now standing in Luna's castle
  317. >you open your eyes and are immediately stunned by the scene laying out in front of you
  318. >you're standing in the middle of a long corridor, the walls made of polished stone and several tapestries of various designs adorn them
  319. >a long, thin dark blue carpet covers the floor, tapering off in front of the few doors that line the corridor
  320. "What a beautiful castle." you mutter to yourself
  321. >"Why thank you anon, a great deal of effort is put into it." Luna replies standing off to your right
  322. >much to your surprise and slight chagrin, Luna grabs one of your arms and begins to lightly pull you down the corridor
  323. >you have fought countless battles, seen people die, and even encountered a monster or two, but this is bar none the strangest thing to ever happen to you
  324. >the princess of the night and one of the rulers of the kingdom you now reside in has personally sought you out and has now brought you to her castle out of "curiosity"
  325. >you had wanted to maintain a low profile upon for arrival to Equestria, but clearly that plan has now been thrown off the balcony
  326. >you pass a few people during your little walk, most of who you presume to be guards
  327. >each and every one of them giving you a look of pure shock
  328. >twilight apparently wasn't kidding when she said Luna doesn't interact with people often
  329. >at last she stops you in front of a large, oak door
  330. >with a wave of her hand, the door effortlessly glides open
  331. >the room is lined with rows upon rows of bookshelves
  332. >off to one side is a large desk, a slightly smaller table and a few chairs
  333. >"Welcome to my private study." she tells you, less authority in her voice now
  334.
  335. >under normal circumstances you would be inclined to pick up one of those books and dive in
  336. >despite your former profession, you could always enjoy a good story or gathering knowledge
  337. >Luna takes a seat at the table in the corner and invites you to sit next to her
  338. >you're a guest in the royal castle, not about to be discourteous, you join the princess in the adjacent chair
  339. >she waves her hand again, but this time, a teapot and two cups appear on the table
  340. >"Would you like some tea anon?" she asks you casually
  341. >you politely nod and she pours you a generous amount
  342. >you pick the cup up slowly and take a sip, its delicious
  343. >she takes a sip as well
  344. >this is admittedly a pleasant change of pace from the night's previous events
  345. >it almost reminds you of your time spent with the empress…
  346. >"So anon.."
  347. >you were still dreading this conversation
  348. "So your highness…what exactly would you like to know?" your tone conveys a fair amount of anxiety
  349. >"First, you may call us Luna. Second, we wish to know who you really are. No ordinary soldier could or would do what you did earlier."
  350. >you take another sip of tea so you can form your response properly in your mind
  351. "Well…I really am from Latria," you begin. "And I was a soldier…at one point."
  352. >Luna merely beckons you to continue
  353. >you take a deep breath
  354. "But my real name is Anonymous…the empire's…former champion."
  355. >you expect her to respond with contempt
  356. >but her expression shows a sudden realization, as if something has just clicked in her mind
  357. >"We see…you must not have been treated well after the coup de etat…" her demeanor is sympathetic, she actually seems to care
  358.
  359. >you pull your hood down again and look her in the eye before responding
  360. "For years I was the empress' champion. My loyalty and devotion unquestioned. The empire held me in such high regard for my service and my relations with the people. But…the empress was special to me. I served as her companion, her husband having perished in battle. She would insist that i have tea with her every night and chat after the long days would end. She was so compassionate, i did just abut anything for her."
  361. >Luna can clearly tell where this story of yours is headed
  362. >"What happened anonymous?" concern in her eyes
  363. >you run a hand through your hair, not looking forward to reliving this
  364. "There were those who were opposed to her staying in power after the death of her husband. Her son being one of them. He had always been like a younger brother to me, he was in line for the throne…but he just could not be patient. He organized all those loyal to him. In one fell swoop his conspirators stormed the palace and captured the empress. I was outnumbered…there was nothing i could do…"
  365. >the memories begin to resurge
  366. "She was…executed…publicly. The only reason I was spared from death was due to my years of service to the empire and royal family. But I was exiled under threat of death should I ever return. My life and home taken away from me…my only crime…was upholding my sworn duty."
  367. >you feel yourself shudder, unsure of whether from anger or sadness
  368. >you're about to stand up, but two hands on your arm stops you
  369. >on the other end is Luna, almost trying to pull you back down
  370. >but when you don't, she drapes her arms over you in a sort of hug, in the way one would comfort a grieving individual
  371. >"Such a terrible fate to have endured anonymous. We cannot imagine the burden you have carried. But we…can relate to being alone for an extended time."
  372.
  373. >her last words roll around in your mind a few times
  374. >the ruler of a kingdom being lonely
  375. >you wouldn't believe it if you hadn't just heard it
  376. "Forgive my questioning your hi-…Luna. But you rule a kingdom presumably filled with subjects. You rule beside your sister. How would you know what it's like to be alone?"
  377. >for a moment, she averts your gaze
  378. >she shuffles her feet anxiously
  379. >"Let us just say…you are not the only one who wishes to keep aspects of your life a secret."
  380. >you give an empathetic nod, after all, she is right on that account
  381. >but she isn't finished
  382. >"But what we can tell you anonymous…we are the princess who rules over the night, we raise the moon while our sister raises the sun. Almost all of our subjects either sleep through the night it or fear it. They fear us as well. We rarely get to enjoy the company of others."
  383. >that fills in the gaps as to why she went out of her way to meet you, as well as why she brought you back with her
  384. >you want to put a hand on her like did with you, but you are unsure if that would even be appropriate
  385. >so you do the next best thing
  386. >you put on a reassuring smile
  387. "If this gives you any solace Luna, I have always appreciated the night. It brings peace from the chaos of day. Everything finally slows down allowing me to enjoy life. And since i've been on my own…it's protected me in a way. Giving me a chance to move freely and as far away from Latria as possible. And now…it would seem I have you to thank for it."
  388. >the entire time you're speaking, Luna sits beside you, listening intently.
  389. >but her even expression falters as you go on
  390. >a small smile turns to a blush, and when you finish by saying you have her to thank, a single tear forms in one of her eyes
  391. >you are about to ask if she is alright, but the question is quickly answered for you
  392. >leaning over, Luna wraps her arms around you again, but much more tightly this time
  393. >her skin is soft and slightly cold to the touch, but the cold is soothing
  394.
  395. >despite the instincts you have as a warrior, your guard is slowly lowered
  396. >her hair also slowly begins to find its way across your face
  397. >it may be ethereal in appearance, but it feels almost like strands of silk
  398. >almost of its own accord, one of your hands rises up only to land on her shoulder
  399. >as wonderful as this moment is, it ends when Luna begins to pull away
  400. >but not before quickly kissing you on the cheek
  401. >"Thank you anonymous," she beams, "Your words are kind, and do bring us solace."
  402. >but you're still stuck in the moment when she kissed you, it was almost unbelievable
  403. >the softness of her lips, the apparent affection behind them…the sensation that washed over you when they touched your skin
  404. >when reality at last kicks back in, the word flustered does not even begin to describe things
  405. >a mighty tint of red spreads across a good portion of your face
  406. >you quietly fidget for a bit but then take another sip of tea before fumbling with your words
  407. >it does not help things when Luna begins giggling at the response she's gotten
  408. > you are anonymous, the empire's former champion, they called you the dark angel
  409. >you can handle the slaying of enemies, but evidently not a kiss
  410. >for the sake of not making things awkward for yourself, the kiss is chalked up to gratitude
  411. >the door to the study being violently opened disrupts the scene
  412. >someone who you presume to be a guard stands in the doorway, clearly distraught
  413. >"My lady! Your assistance is required immediately!"
  414. >she shoots up and quickly moves to follow the guard but beckons you to follow
  415. >they set a near frantic pace as they move down the long corridor
  416. >you can only keep up and wait for some sort of explanation
  417.
  418. >you simply tag along with Luna and the guardsman for awhile before you all reach what you presume to be the castle's foyer
  419. >once there, a few more guard members can be seen, sharing the same frantic look as the one beside you
  420. >they all stand at attention when they notice Luna
  421. >"What are we needed for?" she asks, clearly concerned
  422. >one of them salutes before speaking up
  423. >"your highness, a swarm of changelings is attacking the outer wall! The unit supposed to be patrolling the outer wall is nowhere to be found. We need orders!"
  424. >you have only heard of changelings in stories
  425. >grotesque beings that take on an insect type shape, but can assume the form of just about anyone or anything
  426. >why they would be attacking a city like this though is beyond you
  427. >"Then send all available guard to the outer wall. We will investigate the missing patrol but first the changelings must be repelled!"
  428. >a resounding "yes your highness!" rings out and they run off in the direction of the threat
  429. >you automatically move to join the departing guards, but Luna holds you back
  430. "Shouldn't I go their aid?" you inquire
  431. >you are likely a far more capable fighter than any of her guard
  432. >"You will anonymous. But we need you at our side as we personally attend to this."
  433. >questions begin to burn in your head, but instinct once again takes over
  434. >a threat looms, save the thoughts for later
  435. "As you wish Luna, my swords are at your disposal."
  436. >she places a hand on you
  437. >you know what's about to come
  438. >pop
  439.
  440. >teleportation apparently becomes easier over time, it doesn't result in the same disorientation as before
  441. >but the scene now playing out in front of you is disorienting enough
  442. >the outer wall of Canterlot is lined with a small row of houses and stores on either side of the street, some built into wall itself
  443. >but all you behold is just chaos
  444. >citizens run for their lives, some ducking under carts, others trying to force their way into houses
  445. >but others are being harassed by the changelings
  446. >they're as hideous as the old tales tell
  447. >they have four legs protruding from their bodies, but their whole bodies appear to be coated in something green, more like chitin than armor
  448. >mid sized, leathery wings allow them to fly, two large fangs protrude from the top of their mouths and their eyes are devoid of pupils
  449. >if this were under different circumstances, you would be both disgusted and intrigued
  450. >more guards are beginning to amass around the ones that have already responded
  451. >in a loud, almost unnatural voice, Luna yells out
  452. >"A few of you guide as many citizens as you can to safety. The rest of you, form up! We need to expel these invaders! Show these monsters we are not to be trifled with!"
  453. >a unified verbal salute rings out as a small handful of guards detach to aid the fleeing civilians
  454. >as Luna its about to give more orders, a loud thud is heard
  455. >a changelings has swooped down and has a guard pinned to the ground
  456. >the other guards now seem too frightened to react
  457. >without hesitation you draw a sword and run to a full sprint
  458. >the guard is crying out in terror as the changelings bites and gnashes away trying to find a vulnerable spot
  459. >as you draw closer, you lean down and forward, lowering your center of gravity
  460. >you ram headlong in to the changeling, knocking it to the ground
  461. >unsure of how thick the chitin on its body is, you use the remaining momentum to plunge your sword into it
  462.
  463. >the blade meets a fair amount of resistance
  464. >but when you hear the changeling emit a noise somewhere between a hiss and shriek, it's evident that you've hit the mark
  465. >but the thing isn't dead yet
  466. >it swings its chitin coated arm from under you and it smacks you broadside
  467. >it's underside may be more vulnerable, but everything else is blunt and solid
  468. >the impact of the blow is comparable to eating a shield bash
  469. >you grunt as the blow connects and you're thrown off balance
  470. >thankfully you retain your instincts and maintain a tight grip on your weapon
  471. >but since you've left Latria, you haven't been wearing any armor, that hit will bruise up quite nicely
  472. >but as the changeling gets back up, it's clearly leaking a green, viscous fluid
  473. >you have at least wounded it
  474. >you pull yourself back up as quickly as possible
  475. >but now it seems you've also pissed the thing off, for it now folds its wings in and makes a desperate lunge in your direction
  476. >you let the monster get in close
  477. >as it comes down on you, you twist your arm and bring your sword straight up
  478. >the changeling impales itself on your sword
  479. >with a final guttural noise, its body goes limp
  480. >you hear the sound of armor hitting ground
  481. >two guardsmen have run over, one lifts the changeling away, the other helps you to your feet
  482. >that little scrap may have taught you some valuable information, but this threat is far from resolved
  483. >there are still some blaring problems
  484.
  485. >first, it's nighttime, and though the moon is unhindered in casting its glow, it is far from enough light to fight adequately
  486. >second, though more guards have arrived, most of them are standing around too frightened to act
  487. >lastly, the changelings can fly, and it isn't exactly easy to slay an airborne enemy
  488. >you have worked with and commanded men in your time with the empire, and now is as good a time as any to put that experience to use
  489. "Listen up!" you yell at the top of lungs
  490. >Luna, still present, looks shocked, but the nearby men all look to you
  491. "Your home is under attack!! The lives of the citizens you're sworn to protect are in danger! They may be frightening, but fear is a luxury you cannot afford! They can be killed! Land piercing blows on their undersides, that is where they are vulnerable!"
  492. >an idea begins to form
  493. "Any archers and spearmen step forward." you bark again
  494. >surprisingly they comply, and a fair amount of men step forward
  495. "Archers, take positions as high up as you can. Maintain a steady stream of arrows. Aim for their eyes or wings if you can! But push them towards the ground!"
  496. >Luna yells out to do as you say and they all rush off to take their positions
  497. "Spearmen! When the archers manage to push one of the vile creatures low enough, thrust your spears straight up to pierce their vulnerable underside! Wound them as best you can, they can't maintain flight int hat state for long! Everyone else, when one of them lands wounded, give it no time to recover! Attack it in any way you are able. Defend your homes, defend your lives!!"
  498. >a resounding yell from the guard indicate your impromptu rally is a success
  499. >the archers have taken up their positions, some on rooftops, some on the wall
  500. >Luna walks up to your side
  501. >"A well rounded strategy anonymous. We will play our part as well."
  502. >you ask her if she's sure about being in harms way
  503. >"We are a more hands on ruler than our sister, do not worry anonymous, we may surprise you."
  504.
  505. >as if to punctuate her point, her hand flies out and aims straight at the swarm
  506. >a bolt of blue energy fires straight from her hand and hits a changeling dead on
  507. >it subsequently drops from the sky and hits the ground with a thud
  508. >two guards take the initiative, draw their weapons and rush it, finishing what Luna started
  509. >now it begins
  510. >the twang of bows ring out as a hail of arrows glide straight toward the swarm
  511. >a few have their leathery wings punctured and start to nose dive towards the ground
  512. >more guard rush them when they land and dispatch them
  513. >but a few of them break free from the arrow shower and swoop in
  514. >one guard is picked up, dragged upwards and dropped back down
  515. >another is tackled to the ground
  516. >you sprint over to the aid of the one being pinned, ramming it head on like the first one
  517. >he scrambles to his feet and runs over to where it landed, plunging his sword straight down
  518. >a loud crack is heard another blue streak rips through the sky as Luna fires another bolt
  519. >you personally chase the changeling down to where it lands and with both hands gripping your blade, stab what you assume to be its throat
  520. >but another one swoops down and slams into you, knocking you into the side of a building
  521. >Luna fires off another bolt to protect you
  522. >as you struggle to a vertical base, another guard slays the downed creature
  523. >you and Luna now work in sync, her downing one and you dispatching it
  524. >archers bring some down outright, and push yet more slowly groundwards
  525. >the spearmen pierce them, felling them as well to be disposed of
  526. >like a well oiled machine, this process is repeated innumerous times until the few remaining changelings fly off in retreat
  527. >chittering and wing flapping can no longer be heard
  528. >victory
  529. >you raise your sword high and congratulate the guards on a battle well fought
  530. >but now that the adrenaline is wearing off, the blows you took start to affect you
  531.
  532. >being stiff armed by an arm covered in chitin, rammed by a flying changeling and being knocked back into a building with no armor did some damage
  533. >the sudden return of pain causes you to fall to one knee
  534. >you quickly look yourself over, not enough blood to raise concern, but the pain is sufficient, and you may have a broken bone or two
  535. >Luna rushes to your side, concern quite evident on her face
  536. >"Are you alright anonymous?" she kneels down beside you to get a getter look at you
  537. "Yeah.."you wince slightly as you try to stand up, "Just got knocked around a bit"
  538. >Luna attempts to help you up, but the two of you are now surrounded by a wall of armor and smiles
  539. >Luna gives a brief explanation of who you are
  540. >some say they're glad you're on their side, some slap you on the back in appreciation, and some shake your hand before they all depart to return to their posts
  541. >the once chaos ridden streets are now solely occupied by you and Luna
  542. >you make another attempt to get to your feet and this time you succeed
  543. >Luna puts both arms around you as if trying to support you
  544. >its actually endearing that she worries over you
  545. >"We are most impressed with you anonymous." she beams at you
  546. >"How you snapped my men from their fear, composed a strategy on the spot, and even how well you seem to work in tandem with us."
  547. >you realize that she did in fact surprise you, a princess, one as seemingly delicate and beautiful as Luna, but yet leads by example and joined the battle personally
  548. >you're taken aback as it dawns on you how special she is
  549. >your face turns a light red again, and it does not help things when Luna puts a hand to her chest and places the other hand on yours
  550. "What are you-"
  551. >the question is answered silently as a cold, soothing sensation washes over you
  552. >the pain from various impacts fades away and it slowly ceases being an effort to stay standing
  553.
  554. >the question is answered silently as a frigid, soothing sensation washes over you
  555. >the pain from various impacts starts to fade away and it even becomes less of a struggle to stand
  556. >Luna at last takes her hand off you with a grin of satisfaction
  557. >"We cannot have you walking around injured anonymous." she states matter of factly
  558. >it's becoming increasingly apparent that magic is far more powerful than you ever thought possible
  559. >the empire was almost devoid of it compared to Equestria
  560. >you quickly shake yourself off, almost uncertain of whether healing like that is even possible
  561. >"There may be changelings still around," she looks around almost worried
  562. >"Is there a champion brave enough to escort me back to the castle?"
  563. >…is that a giggle she let out just then?
  564. >flying, shapeshifting creatures couldn't phase you
  565. >but again, a princess catches you off guard
  566. >though you walk closely beside her, compelled to remain in princess Luna's company
  567. >she wraps her arms around one of yours in a very formal fashion
  568. >the walk back to the castle is silent and uneventful, save for the incredulous stares from a few citizens awake at this hour
  569. >the entire time, Luna didn't let go of your arm
  570. >however you were not about to complain, it would be a lie if you were to say you don't enjoy it
  571. >at last the two of you pass through the grand entrance
  572. >Luna releases her grip on you as the stationed guards salute her
  573. >but apparently they were present during the battle, for they acknowledge you as well
  574. >Luna beckons for you to continue following her, but this time, leading you in a different direction than before
  575. >now she leads you up flight after flight of stairs, the castle demonstrating its emptiness as your footsteps loudly echo
  576. >a few corridors later, you see large, oak doors with a crescent moon emblazoned on them
  577. >it doesn't take a scholar to figure out that must be Luna's chambers
  578. >but she motions to another, smaller door to your left
  579.
  580. "Was there something else I needed to see your hi-…Luna?"
  581. >you have almost forgotten that she wishes you to forego the royal title
  582. >she rolls her eyes at your near mistake but opens the door nonetheless
  583. >your curiosity only escalates when a somber expression falls over her
  584. >you peer inside only to see another room, a large bed, a wardrobe, a small book shelf and a desk its only distinguishing features
  585. >"These chambers are normally reserved for honored guests," she explains
  586. >"it is your first day here, and we surmise that you must be exhausted. We extend this room to you if you wish it. Besides, our sister may more than likely wish to speak with you tomorrow."
  587. >this is possibly the most miserable she's sounded all night
  588. >but then you remember back to what she told you earlier, about being the princess who rules over the night and almost lamenting over how most of her subjects just sleep through it all
  589. >in truth, you do feel tired, and somewhere to lie down does sound pleasant
  590. >but if you do, then you will just be another person to sleep through Luna's night, and you don't like seeing her like this
  591. "I appreciate your offer," you begin
  592. "But I don't think that will be necessary. Besides, if memory serves…we were in the middle of a conversation, and it would be a shame for that tea to go to waste."
  593. >her face visibly lights up, but just as quickly, she regains her composure, but you swear you can see a hint of red in her cheeks
  594. >she gently grabs your arm and eagerly leads you away back towards her study
  595. >you cannot help but smile in reaction to all of this
  596. >it's almost adorable how fond Luna seems to be of you already, and that she would be disappointed at the thought of you sleeping through the rest of the night
  597. >she is probably just lonely and grateful for the company
  598. >the study is just as you and Luna left it, right down to the cups still half full with tea
  599.
  600. >Luna waves a hand and suddenly, the one window in the room glides open, allowing the cool night air to seep in
  601. >it feels wonderful, just one more thing you seem to enjoy abut nighttime
  602. >by now you've given up on keeping the hood over your head, every time you try, Luna seems to take offense to it
  603. "Thank you for healing my injuries Luna," you tell her gratefully
  604. "But you didn't need to be concerned. I've walked away from far worse."
  605. >Luna appears to be almost hesitant about something
  606. >as if she wants to say something, but can't quite bring herself to say it
  607. "Is something the matter Luna?" you raise an eyebrow
  608. >"Anonymous…may we be honest with you?"
  609. >an odd question, why would she not be?
  610. >you simply nod and tell her she can
  611. >"Do you remember when we told you we rarely enjoy the company of others?"
  612. >you nod again, recognizing this sin't the time top speak
  613. >"Well…since we have returned from…a long absence, we have not had any at all apart from our sister Celestia. Things can be quite lonely around the castle."
  614. >you can only sit still and listen as a goddess opens up to you
  615. >"So when we heard of a stranger's arrival to our kingdom. We saw…an opportunity. Someone who has not had a fear of us instilled in them by old stories."
  616. >there is clearly something important you don't know
  617. >"When we saw your willingness to defend our subjects and your prowess in battle, our curiosity was piqued. And you impressed us with the way you handled the changeling attack, and with the way you worked together with us…but…"
  618. >now you can tell that she's getting to the real point
  619. >"When you chose to come back with us instead of going to sleep…whether you intended it or not…that meant a great deal to us. Not once has anyone besides our sister wanted to spend a night by our side. You show us kindness that we simply are not accustomed to. You know what it's like to be banished from your home and spend so much time on your own,"
  620. >she looks away momentarily
  621.
  622. "though we have not known each other very long…we hope…that you will stay."
  623. >she looks away again, clearly embarrassed for having said all of that
  624. >you honestly have no idea what to say
  625. >the princess has just confided in you, when she clearly has no one else to
  626. >more than that, she wants you to stay around
  627. >part of you is wary about being close to royalty again
  628. >but another, more dominant part feels that same compulsion as earlier.
  629. >that part part of you wants to stick around, to make her happy. After all, she was the one to really welcome you here. And who are you to deny a goddess' wish?
  630. >you fumble for a moment, trying to form the words correctly in your mind
  631. "It's saddening to see someone, a ruler no less, being shunned for superficial reasons. You reached out to a stranger who no one in this kingdom knows,"
  632. >you aren't very good at this sort of thing
  633. "And though I have not known you for very long, I find myself wanting to make you happy. And if my company is what makes you happy, then who am I to deny a princess?"
  634. >this time Luna doesn't make an effort to conceal her joy
  635. >she nearly flies out of her chair to embrace you
  636. >the regal expression that was a least somewhat present on her face until now has evaporated
  637. >now there is just joy and gratitude
  638. >blood rushes to your face as Luna's soft, cold skin comes into contact with yours
  639. >her blue, satin dress is smooth to the touch and her hair falls freely into your face
  640. >after all, Luna isn't the only one unaccustomed to affection
  641. >you did not exactly have the luxury of settling down in the empire
  642. >it is an incredible feeling, that such simple gestures make Luna so happy
  643.
  644. >it is a wonderful feeling, that such a simple gesture makes Luna so happy
  645. >after a few moments that seem to last an eternity, Luna pulls back from you, a slight blush creeping onto her face
  646. >she clears her throat once and straightens her hair
  647. >as if snapping back to reality, Luna makes one more inquiry of you
  648. >"We are curious anonymous…most warriors of your..former status are usually given a title, correct?"
  649. >unsure of what she means, you ask her to clarify
  650. >"Oh, well, hmm, you know…a title. A monicker if you will."
  651. >an unusual question, but it's hardly a personal one
  652. "Well, the people of Latria called me the dark angel." you reply matter of factly
  653. >she seems intrigued by this
  654. >"Why did they call you that?" she asks
  655. "I never asked for that name…but I guess it was because of how I used to watch over the empress. But in battle I wouldn't hesitate to cut down enemies. Always finishing them off as swiftly as possible."
  656. >the princess' face remains mostly unreadable, but there's a hint of something that she cannot hide
  657. >if you didn't know any better, you would swear it looks like "excitement"
  658. >the princess spends the next few hours asking you all sorts of questions
  659. >apart from a few that lean towards the personal side, you answer all of them
  660. >but Luna expertly keeps the subject of conversation away from herself
  661. >you want to ask her a few things as well, but decide against it, unsure if it would be inappropriate
  662. >gradually you become more and more weary, trying your best not to slouch in your chair
  663. >a few specks of sunlight grab your attention, and Luna's as well
  664. >"Good heavens!" luna yelps out, "is it morning already?"
  665. >a quick peek out the window confirms that the sun is beginning to rise
  666. >it dawns on you that you just spent the entire night with Luna
  667. >but she now seems very concerned
  668. >she quickly rambles off something about not lowering the moon and runs out
  669. >you're left alone in her study, unsure of what to do next
  670.
  671. >a book on an adjacent shelf catches your attention
  672. >"The Maiden in the Moon"
  673. >you absent mindedly begin to read through the first few pages
  674. >it's actually a story about Luna
  675. >two chapters go by, and it seems there is definitely something about her she doesn't want you to know
  676. >you wish to read further, but the door swinging open perishes the thought
  677. >a man clad in golden armor stands in the doorway
  678. >"Anonymous?" he asks
  679. >you just nod in agreement
  680. >"I am Flash Sentry, of the royal guard. You actually saved me from one of those...horrible things last night."
  681. >from force of habit, you stand up and walk over to Flash to shake his hand.
  682. "Can I help you Flash?"
  683. >"Princess Celestia has ordered me to find you, she wishes to meet with you."
  684. >over the course of the night, you have almost forgotten of Celestia, Luna's sister who rules over the day.
  685. "Seems as though I don't have a choice, do I? Well lead the way."
  686. >Flash takes a few steps ahead of you and begins to lead you down a few flights of stairs, this castle seems to be built on stairs
  687. >but the castle is clearly more active now
  688. >people dressed in high end atttire beginning to file in, chatter beginning to fill the halls as you walk
  689. >you take the opportunity and ask Flash what princess Celestia is like
  690. >he paints the portrait of a wise and benevolent ruler. Kind, fair, and one whom her subjects have next to nothing negative to say about
  691. >you didn't realize you are nervous until now
  692. >but his description puts you at ease, at least for now
  693. >after a few more corridors and doorways, you come upon a set of large, pristine white doors
  694. >Flash tells you this is the throne room and beckons you inside before returning to his post
  695. >the doors give shockingly little resistance as you push them open
  696. >for a throne room, its actually quite subtle
  697. >but one of the thrones is occupied, and its occupant stands and extends a hand towards you
  698. >"Hello there, you must be anonymous, please, come in"
  699.
  700. >Celestia's voice is warm and inviting
  701. >you take steps until you reach the steps leading up to the throne
  702. >"Greetings your highness." you state, bowing your head
  703. >its immediately clear that not only are the sisters opposites in their spheres of influence, but in appearance as well
  704. >where luna's skin is pale, celestia's is healthy and almost glowing. Her hair flows in the same ethereal fashion, but celestia's displays the full color spectrum. She wears a long, flowing white dress decorated with a sun, gold jewelry and a larger crown adorns her head. Where Luna's bust was more modest, Celestia is clearly the more "gifted" of the two
  705. >a few moments pass, but she doesn't even get up from her throne
  706. >so you take the initiative and speak up
  707. >"If I may inquire your highness…why do you need to meet with me?"
  708. >again she doesn't move and replies from her throne
  709. >"You needn't be so nervous anonymous. A group of my guards have been regaling the tale of your aid in repelling the changelings. I merely wish to meet you, and thank you."
  710. >the smile on her face hasn't faltered once since you walked in…it's almost unsettling
  711. "Yes well-"
  712. >"Or rather, I should be thanking three times." she interrupts you
  713. >"Once for fending off the changelings, once for defending my student Twilight Sparkle…and once..for looking after my sister. She has told me about you, but I'm afraid she can be naive at times."
  714. >now there is definitely something bothering you about her
  715. >it isn't what she said…more like the way she said it
  716. "Well your highness," you begin hesitantly, "Princess Luna had more to do with repelling the attack than I did…and she hardly needs to be looked after."
  717. >Celestia seems slightly taken aback, but the smile never disappears
  718. >"So my guards have said. But nonetheless, i'm relieved that someone of your capability was there to defend her…hasty decision."
  719. "Yes…well i'm nothing special. Anyone would have done the same in my position.."
  720.
  721. >Celestia stares at you for an uncomfortable amount of time, as if intensely scrutinizing you
  722. >that regal smile still plastered on
  723. >but what bothers you is the way she talked about Luna
  724. >condescending doesn't begin to cover it
  725. >they are supposedly equals, but Celestia seems to treat her like a child
  726. >the silence is broken again by her warm voice
  727. >"Anyone who would be so willing to come to the aid of a kingdom not their own is quite welcome here. You have my gratitude anonymous, i'm sure I can find a place for you here."
  728. >then, still without getting off her throne, she waves you off, apparently saying you can leave now
  729. >more than glad to oblige, you quickly bow again before exiting the throne room
  730. >as you begin to wander aimlessly through the castle, that meeting begins to bother you more and more
  731. >or rather celestia herself seems to bother you
  732. >she was very kind to you, and her words of gratitude were genuine
  733. >but yet…that smile never left her face, she never once left her throne, and she spoke of her sister in such a condescending manner
  734. >and there was no courtesy, just a wave off
  735. >the whole opposing theme between Celestia and Luna only seems to deepen
  736. >it just makes you glad that Luna was the one to find you first, and you hope to avoid Celestia in the future, being in her presence leaves you feeling rather unsettled
  737. >in your aimless wandering, you realize you no longer know where you are
