  6. Dear Lucy,
  7.
  8. I am writing to you in your capacity as Councillor for the Newnham ward.
  9.
  10. As a County Councillor, I am sure you are aware of the plans to
  11. privatise the top floor of the Cambridge Central Library, putting its
  12. administration under the company Kora, part of the Regus Group.
  13.
  14. Putting aside ideological issues for or against privatisation or
  15. concerns about the company's unethical practices such as tax avoidance,
  16. this still worries me: According to a Freedom of Information request,
  17. the planned changes will involve a great reduction in the number of
  18. desks, for which demand is already much greater than supply. This is
  19. particularly foolish at a time when exams are coming up for university,
  20. sixth form and school students.
  21.
  22. The proposals were never very transparent at all, and it is all the
  23. more worrying that a petition to oppose them was initially not accepted
  24. by the council's 'Democratic Services Manager' on a technicality,
  25. dismissing the voices of three thousand people.
  26.
  27. I understand that you will be meeting on Tuesday to discuss the
  28. proposals. I therefore implore you to do all that you can to oppose
  29. them, as well as getting other councillors to do the same. Please help
  30. to defend not only the library, but the principle of transparent
  31. government.
