  1. >"I'm not going to sleep with you."
  2. >Aria says, arms crossed and glaring daggers at you.
  3. >In a crowded school hallway no less, not that anyone's really paying attention to you.
  4. "What?"
  5. >"I'm. Not. Going. To. Sleep. With. You."
  6. "Who's even asking you to?"
  7. >Not that anyone would need to.
  8. >You've known Aria for maybe two weeks.
  9. >That is, she's only been going to this school for maybe two weeks.
  10. >The first few days she stuck close to her only two friends, Adagio and Sonata.
  11. >But after the whole Battle of the Bands thing they've started at least talking to the other students.
  12. >The other two, that is.
  13. >Aria just makes snide comments in class and annoys the teachers.
  14. >But you've been sitting next to her and joining her in that, just out of boredom.
  15. >You thought maybe you were just the sort of boring friends that could do that kind of thing
  16. >Maybe she thought you were flirting.
  17. >Maybe you were.
  18. >She stares at you a moment, eyebrows still furrowed.
  19. >"Adagio might jump into bed with some random guy. I don't."
  20. "So don't. What do I care?"
  21. >"Don't pretend you don't want to. You're always hanging around me lately."
  22. >You can't help letting an irritated sigh out.
  23. "My classes are boring. Misery loves company."
  24. >She frowns and looks aside.
  25. >Suddenly she seems less angry and more... insulted? Annoyed?
  26. >it's hard to place
  27. >"You're an idiot."
  28. >She walks off as Sonata skips by, joining her friend in a much more subdued manner.
  29. >Aria's not in her seat during the next class.
  30. >Or the following.
  31. >After classes are over for the day, you find yourself more miserable than you expected.
  32. >Yeah, maybe you were flirting, or at least thinking about it.
  33. >But she didn't have to be such a bitch and just take off like that.
  34. >When you close your locker, you jump in surprise as you see Sonata standing there smiling brightly at you.
  35. >"Hey! No standing around complaining with Aria today?"
  36. >What.
  37. >Have people really been noticing? Or is it just Sonata?
  38. "She didn't come to classes after lunch. I think she's mad at me."
  39. >Sonata just smiles vacantly.
  40. >Not that you'd mention it to Aria, it's not really cool to bitch about someone's friends to them.
  41. >But Sonata has never really seemed all that bright.
  42. >More like a damp match in a dark cave.
  43. >"For real? But she talks about you like ALL the time, and--"
  44. >Sonata suddenly stops talking, a startled look on her face.
  45. >"Wait, don't tell her I said that, okay? I'm not supposed to say that."
  46. "Aria talks about me?"
  47. >How interesting.
  48. >Sonata glances side to side nervously, as if she expects to find a glowering purple girl hiding in a locker
  49. >"Yeah, but like... look, she's not good at that, okay? She's never been good at that."
  50. "Good at what?"
  51. >That's right, play dumb. Maybe she'll get confused and just come right out with it.
  52. >Sonata tilts her head a little at you.
  53. >She points her finger at you, and then waggles it between you and herself.
  54. >"You know, this. Talking and stuff."
  55. >Yeah, okay.
  56. >She's always sort of out there with it.
  57. >Says what she's thinking unless it's something positive
  58. >And then she just glosses over with a bitchy joke.
  59. "So, what? She likes me then?"
  60. >Sonata's bright grin could light up the hall by itself.
  61. >"Maybe! Come on, I bet she's back at home! You can come over!"
  62. >Before you can even respond, Sonata has grabbed your hand and is tugging at you while you stand there.
  63. "What? I'm not going to go over uninvited."
  64. >"I'm inviting you! Come on, I'll make dinner. You and Aria can watch a movie and complain about it!"
  65. "But that's stupid."
  66. >But you close your locker and follow along
  67. >Sonata lets go of your hand after you start following, and smiles as the two of you leave school
  68. >It's a nice, sunny day, and the other students all leave at the same time, going to cars and busses
  69. >But you walk behind Sonata instead.
  70. >You're not even sure why you're coming along
  71. >it's not like you were pursuing Aria.
  72. >But maybe she was thinking about it.
  73. >Besides, it isn't like you haven't thought about it.
  74. >Especially when she could sing, damn.
  75. >You're pretty sure every guy in the school thought about it then.
  76. >"Where are you going?"
  77. >You stop walking and look around.
  78. >Sonata's waving from the staircase up to an apartment complex.
  79. "Oh, just spacing out."
  80. >She smiles like she understands, and you follow her up the stairs.
  81. >When she opens the door, the first thing you notice is that the place is a bit of a mess.
  82. >But not terrible, not like they'll be getting rats or anything.
  83. >"Hey Aria! Look who I brought!"
  84. >Aria glances up from the couch, and her eyes widen a moment before she forces her features into a scowl.
  85. >"Ugh, Sonata, why'd you bring him out here? You're just the worst."
  86. >"YOU are!"
  87. >Sonata says it with a complete lack of malice or conviction.
  88. >She closes the door behind you and walks off toward the little kitchen area.
  89. >Aria looks at you
  90. >You look back at her.
  91. >A few seconds pass in a weird, tense silence.
  92. >Suddenly, a weird smile creeps across Aria's lips
  93. >It's weird in that she's smiling.
  94. >Not a sneer, not a smirk, not a grin. A smile.
  95. >"Sit down."
  96. >You walk over and toss your books to the floor beside the couch, and sit down next to Aria.
  97. >"She thinks she's setting up a date or something, right?"
  98. "Something like that."
  99. >"Let me guess. Watch movies and complain?"
  100. "Yep."
  101. >Aria points to a stack of DVDs that have been casually piled next to the small TV.
  102. >"Pick one then."
  103. >An hour of boring movie with dry commentary later, Sonata delivers a few plates of spaghetti
  104. >She sits down on the other side of Aria and smiles at the both of you.
  105. >Aria doesn't touch hers until you try yours.
  106. >You can't help but make a face at the taste.
  107. "What is this?"
  108. >Sonata keeps smiling as she swallows her own bite.
  109. >"It's spaghetti! But with cumin, and habanero, and some curry powder."
  110. >You take another taste, and once you know what to expect...
  111. "It's... not bad?"
  112. >Aria rolls her eyes and jabs at a meatball on her plate, but doesn't make any real comment when she starts eating as well.
  113. >Sonata keeps mostly quiet as the movie keeps running over the course of this mid-afternoon dinner.
  114. >As soon as she's done eating, she takes you and Aria's plates and goes to wash up.
  115. >The evening drags on with the second movie, Aria seemingly content to just sit there next to you, her shoulder barely touching yours.
  116. >Making comments about the movie, the acting, Sonata's cooking, whatever.
  117. >Sonata walks by to go into one of the bedrooms, giving you a thumbs up before she closes the door.
  118. >The new movie keeps on being boring, but after a while you notice a weight on your shoulder
  119. >Aria is leaning her head against you, one of her pigtails draping lightly down over your arm
  120. >She doesn't notice you noticing, and you decide not to mention it
  121. >You don't think she wants to be noticed.
  122. >Another twenty minutes pass before the apartment door opens
  123. >Aria sits up immediately, and scoots a bit away from you on the couch.
  124. >Adagio walks in, arm in arm with that guy she's been dating, from school.
  125. >He glances at you as he walks in, and there's a sort of vague nod of recognition.
  126. >They just immediately walk toward another bedroom.
  127. >Aria glances at the room, and then to you.
  128. >You open your mouth to speak, but she holds up a finger to quiet you.
  129. >You wait for her to say something, but then she speaks quietly.
  130. >"Three, two, one, and..."
  131. >A shuddering moan comes from Adagio's bedroom.
  132. >Aria smirks, a more familiar expression.
  133. >"Yeah. That's like all they ever do when they're over here."
  134. "Wow, you weren't kidding about her going right to bed then."
  135. >"They're just getting started."
  136. >The movie doesn't quite drown out the noise.
  137. >The bed creaking, the moaning, it's all still there, just at the limit of audibility.
  138. >You try to ignore the sound of some dude getting laid in the next room, but it's admittedly distracting.
  139. >Even before you feel Aria's hand suddenly lightly grip the bulge in your pants.
  140. "Agh! What the hell?"
  141. >She's scowling at you again, but with a little light of amusement in her eyes.
  142. >"Knew it. You like her."
  143. "Hey, come on! They're being loud, any guy would get like this!"
  144. >"I told you, I'm not going to sleep with you."
  145. >This again?
  146. "I'm not asking you to. We're not even together."
  147. >She raises an eyebrow at you.
  148. >Her fingers tighten around that bulge, not entirely pleasantly.
  149. >"We've been sitting here for hours. We had dinner, we're watching a movie."
  150. >Her glowering frown changes into a grin.
  151. >The kind of grin that sends a shiver up your spine.
  152. >"We're together. You know, until Adagio drags Sonata and me off somewhere else."
  153. "What, you three are leaving?"
  154. >Aria pulls her hand away, and tries to look bored of the topic, looking at her nails.
  155. >"We don't really stay anywhere too long. Or we didn't, anyway."
  156. "But she has a boyfriend. You're all going to school."
  157. >Aria glances around nervously.
  158. >"We never stay. Or at least before..."
  159. >Her eyes stop somewhere for a moment.
  160. >You follow them over to the broken gemstones on the little desk in the corner.
  161. >Oh, shit, right.
  162. >They were magic or something. You asked Sunset about it, but she just kind of waved you off without explaining.
  163. >When you look back to Aria, something in her expression tells you to keep your mouth shut.
  164. >A moment passes, and then you speak anyway.
  165. "Maybe now she won't. I don't mind just sitting here. Do you?"
  166. >Aria looks at you for a moment.
  167. >A long, drawn out, somwhat awkward moment.
  168. >You feel like you're being judged, for something more than what she was expecting.
  169. >Finally, she runs her fingers down your arm, and then interlaces them with yours.
  170. >She holds your hand, and she leans against you again, watching the bad movie that's still playing.
  171. >Maybe it's not perfect.
  172. >Maybe Aria's got some issues even.
  173. >But for right now, the important thing is that you're here with her, and she's here with you.
  174. >Even if you're just watching dumb movies
  175. >At least you're doing it together.
