- Speaking Task 4
- - 45-50 seconds to read a paragraph from an academic text
- - listen to part of a lecture on the same topic
- - hear and read the prompt
- - 30 seconds to prepare your response
- - 60 seconds to record your response
- ---
- DELTA p. 292 - take 45 seconds to read about color
- - color can have physiological effects
- - perceptions are subjective but some things are universal
- - red = warm, blue = cool
- Listen to the lecture and take notes
- warm colors - comfort, love, anger
- red - warmest, raise blood pressure and heartbeat, NOT hospitals or prisons
- orange - energy, enthusiasm, malls and restaurants
- cool colors - calm effect
- blue - peace, security, water, sky, calming effect, use in bedrooms and doctors’ waiting rooms
- green - fresh, nature, health, most popular favorite color, can improve vision, good for offices
- ---
- “Use the examples from the lecture to explain the effects of color.”
- - This doesn’t ask about design choices, so the most important things will be the emotional and physiological effects.
- ---
- Your response can be organized like this:
- 1 Introduction: State the topic and summarize the main concept from the text.
- 2 Lead-in: State what points the professor makes. “The professor discusses warm colors and cool colors.”
- 3 First point
- 4 Detail/example
- 5 Second point
- 6 Detail/example
- ---
- Take 5 minutes to prepare a “perfect” response to ETS 1 test 1 (nonverbal communication)
- ---
- Record your responses to tests 2-4.
- Listen to your responses and decide which one we can hear as a class.
- ---
- Homework: If you want more feedback on today’s writing than a score and a sentence, email me a self-evaluation where you say what you think you did well, what you did badly, and what you will try to improve next time you do writing.
- You can use the descriptions at https://www.ets.org/s/toefl/pdf/toefl_writing_rubrics.pdf to know what things to look at.
