- "VEGETA!" Broly's voice jolted him back to reality. The Omega Blaster in his hand was now glowing white with a deep jade core. His crazed eyes stared daggers at the prince. "You know, I think Frieza had it figured out. When it comes to traitorous Saiyans, there's only one way to deal with them!"
- Suddenly, without warning, Broly pulled the energy sphere out to one side and then spun rapidly, flinging it with every ounce of his massive strength...straight out into space.
- "What the hell?" snapped Vegeta, dropping his arms out of the stance for the Final Flash. Looking up, he saw the green sphere receding rapidly, gaining speed exponentially each second as it shot farther and farther away.
- Toward the nearer of the two stars in the Juno system.
- - Bringer of Death Chapter 76
- The Omega Cannon streaked toward the nearer of the two stars in the Juno system, a dim red subgiant twice as heavy and three times as wide as Earth's sun. The star was nearing the end of its life; though it had once supported a vibrant ecosystem on Alpha Juno, it had expanded and cooled dramatically. No longer capable of supporting a vibrant ecosystem, the planet had been abandoned dozens of centuries before, though a small outpost had remained until Paragus and Broly showed up.
- ...
- "Ahahahhhh!" Broly roared, his laugh punctuated with mixed rage and satisfaction. "There's no stopping it now, little prince!"
- Vegeta seemed transfixed for a moment, staring at the light of the red star. The jade beacon of Broly's attack receded out of sight in seconds, but the prince could still sense its position clearly. The Omega Cannon was quickly gaining distance and speed.
- Alpha Juno orbited close to the binary pair, only a fraction of the distance between the Earth and its sun. He wasn't sure how much closer it was, but by his best estimate it wouldn't take more than five minutes to reach the star...and less than ten minutes for the impending blast wave to surely reach them.
- Supernova. How amusing, he thought, that Frieza had glibly chosen that name for his signature planet-destroying Death Ball. Amusing, because being caught in the explosion of a planet—something the frost demon probably could have survived—was utterly unlike being caught in the explosion of a star. A supernova was said to be the most devastating cosmic force possible, its destructive capacities rivaling even the fierce hunger of a black hole.
- No one in history—at least, no one he knew of—had ever survived the death of a star. Moving at nearly the speed of light, the supernova's radioactive blast wave would swallow up planets, crushing everything in its path to dust. Countless civilizations across the galaxy had been instantly obliterated just like this.
- Even so, the prince didn't waver. As devastatingly powerful as the coming explosion was, he had no worries about his own survival. His new power was more than enough to insulate him from the deadly blast.
- But stopping it...that would not be so likely. It had all happened so fast; even with his incredible speed, there was no way he could catch up in time to deflect it. Worse, trying to prevent the blast wave from obliterating the planet under his feet seemed nearly as futile. No shield he could produce would stretch across the face of an entire world
- ...
- The Omega Cannon, now moving at 99.996% the speed of light and swollen to the size of a small moon, tore through the outer surface of the red subgiant. It left a hypersonic shockwave in its wake as it plummeted toward the core.
- At this stage in its stellar life, the dim red star had finished fusing hydrogen in its core. Now, the center of the star was almost pure helium, the weight of the hydrogen plasma surrounding the core balanced against the energy of helium fusing into carbon.
- Broly's Omega Cannon struck the helium-carbon core and detonated instantly. In less than a tenth of a second, the entire core was blasted into unbound subatomic particles. Their expansion compressed the outer hydrogen envelope while cooling the core from 180 million degrees to a mere 30,000 degrees. No longer supported by the heat of fusion, the core collapsed under its own weight near-instantaneously.
- The outer envelope of heated and compressed hydrogen also collapsed. When it struck the core, which was now ten thousand times denser than lead, it ignited in runaway nuclear fusion and rebounded like a rubber ball...the first 0.63 seconds of a supernova.
- ...
- Vegeta took a deep breath and looked up. His eyes showed him nothing; from the planet's surface, nothing about the red star appeared to have changed. But his senses told him otherwise. He had felt space itself shudder as the attack ripped through the star and blasted its core to shreds. But the blast wave traveled just under the speed of light; he knew he would see nothing with his eyes until it was almost upon him.
- The prince extended both his arms to his sides. His aura flared to life once again, a brilliant beacon enshrouded in arcs of electricity. It grew, building around him in waves and waves of power. This was true effort, the most intense concentration he'd ever done with regard to any attack, that he could recall. Groaning with clenched teeth, he pulled energy from the deepest recesses of his body, concentrating it just in front of each hands. Dark clouds from the upper atmosphere enshrouded him, bolts of midair lightning streaking past him, underneath him, all around him. His body was pulsating, vibrating as if there was an earthquake within his own body.
- "Grrrccchhhhhkkkkkk," his throaty yell echoed all around. He suddenly stretched both of his arms straight forwards, cupping them in the center. Combining the two spheres already charged in each palm released a violent and destructive shockwave through the clouds, dissipating those in front of him so that he could once again see stars. The humming zaps of yellow lightning were continuous, both around him, inside him, and leaking out of the yellow energy sphere centered before his hands. Every spare scrap of power he had was right there, ready to be fired.
- Then he saw it. In slow motion, the dim red giant began to shrink, the outer surface falling, falling...and then a flash of light, billions of times brighter than the hottest sun, searing the sky.
- When he opened his eyes, the red star had changed to bright green and was expanding, seemingly much too fast for its bulk. He knew he only had seconds before the relativistic wave of destruction would reach the planet.
- Vegeta lifted his hands above his head. "ULTIMATE FLASH!"
- The wave of flaming gold energy erupted, not only from his hands, but from his entire aura. The ground far below him split as the column of searing energy rose into the sky, nearly eighty feet wide and wrapped with the electricity of the ascended prince of Saiyans.
- ...
- The geyser of energy shot up, up, into the void of space, streaking toward the wall of approaching light. Like a thin needle of holy white power, it stretched closer, closer...
- There can be no sound in the cold, empty void of space. But the crash of nature's greatest force against Vegeta's most powerful attack produced a shockwave that, if it could have been audible, would have shaken the foundations of planets.
- The inexorable weight of the dying star's blast wave smashed down on the tip of the Ultimate Flash, sending sheets of energy flying out across its face. With undeterred force it descended, forcing the beam back down, until the dense sheets of energy stretched from horizon to horizon.
- Still the lone Saiyan poured all his energy straight up, a tornado of power and resolve spiraling up to where it met the descending wall in a broad white disk. The immovable shield caught the unstoppable force.
- And it had halted.
- Vegeta wasn't even aware of himself anymore. A deep, throaty roar from the depths of his being, violent and powerful, echoed for miles. He felt his beam shudder under the supernova's oppressive weight, but the disk of energy where the two met did not buckle. The wave was all around the world now, bending the disk into a dome that stretched halfway around the small planet.
- Then, just as he felt his muscles and energy begin to falter, his beam broke through the wave from the supernova and exploded, blasting the wall of plasma away from the planet. He was safe, C47 was safe, even Broly was safe.
- But of his ship and fleet, he didn't know. He'd honestly had no idea how much of the supernova he would be able to defend against, whether it would be enough for Alpha Juno or perhaps more. It had indeed managed to extend just beyond the planet's outer atmosphere, but not near far enough to encompass where his fleet had been.
- Now completely exhausted, could only pant for a few moments as he scanned the heavens for any signs of his ship. Slowly, having recovered only a portion of his strength, he filled his lungs and made his way out into space.
