West Blue Seadogs Review

I haven't watched the source material, so all of the characters kind of confused me. There wasn't a link to any archive or summary or anything, so I'm guessing it's either not important or the quest is just pretty half assed.

The first thing I noticed is that the writing quality seemed pretty atrocious, like it was written by a 13 year old. Something about it just seemed off to me, like it was one of those stereotypically bad fanfics. It felt really poorly done and shoddy, and I was about to drop it within a few posts. But for some reason, I stuck with it a little bit longer. And I'm glad I did.

At some point, I looked at it from the perspective of it purposely being a lighthearted and (for lack of a better term) "slapstick" kind of quest. With this perspective, I gained an appreciation for it. The earlier shit quality started to slowly rub off on me, especially once some more serious stuff happened and it seemed to get "better." And it did get into some fairly serious themes, like, children getting exploited and worse tier shit. But it managed to get back into the lighthearted and later pure slapstick shit. And somehow it didn't come off as jarring, but pretty natural, which indicates actually pretty good writing. Not my preference, but I can see the appeal.

I was still completely confused about some of the stuff going on, and it's clear that to appreciate it, you'd have to be a fan of the source material. Or at least have been present for the first thread, which I'm guessing wasn't archived. If you are though, I suspect it's good. The readers seemed to be having fun, getting engaged, doing creative write ins, reaction images, etc. It's good to see that in any quest. QM seems engaged with the players and said he doesn't take notes, which probably means he's a pretty cool guy. If you like One Piece and that kind of atmosphere, maybe check it out. If you don't, you probably will be like me and won't feel like reading through it.

tl;dr: May seem like total dogshit on the surface, but probably good if you're a One Piece fan and worth giving a shot. Rate it One-Piece/10
