  1. THIS story concerns a little girl, whose name was Elaine Jasmine Bock.
  2. When you hear the words “little girl,” you think of a sweet creature, innocent, small, and very cute. These are not the words one uses often to describe Elaine.
  3. She was tall, freckled, pale, and very skinny, had rough skin, and looked as though her parents were a meat grinder and a zombie. There was always that dull, glazed over expression on her face, which was not the best sight in the world. A long scar ran across one cheek, tilting upwards as it crossed the nose, and ended on the other cheek. She had gotten it after falling somewhere, though nobody remembered where. Often she was bruised, puffy, or swelling. And her hair! You’d expect little girls to love brushing their hair and dressing up and things of that sort… but Elaine’s hair lacked any sort of luster and made up for it by tangling in any which way possible. The best way to describe it would be a large brown bird’s nest on her head.
  4. The truth was Elaine was as sweet and innocent as every other little girl, and perhaps even more. She was kind, caring, and loved living creatures. Even the rats and snakes… and yes, the cockroaches! She loved them all. She loved running through the woods and catching little bugs and bringing them home, where her mother would not approve and force her to dump said bugs in the backyard.
  5. The animals loved her as much as she loved them. Stray cats would fawn on her, and her neighbor’s Doberman would jump up and lick her face. The other children, however, did not show such kindness. And neither did their parents. Something about Elaine screamed “This is a bad child.”
  6. Nice people would tell her that she looked like an earth spirit, a sprite, or a forest fairy.
  7. Everyone else told her, “You look like a wreck.”
  8. Her parents were adamant about getting her to be a “respectable little girl” but their attempts were often foiled when she ran into the woods with her beautiful frilly dress. She would come home looking like the survivor of a nuclear apocalypse.
