Yggdrasil

A spring long ago saw me push past the earth and into the air, and my voice broke the silence of the world for the first time. None answered. I grew to match those like I and despite my calls to them for knowledge and companionship. None answered. Time passed, I grew and grew and saw all around me, from the dark blue seas to the towering mountains. I called into the wind. None answered.

I was alone.

So instead I reached inside myself, and bequeathed a spark. I bore a fruit. And from that fruit came my first child. Small and lithe, she darted amongst my branches on wings akin to the clearest waters and her voice cheered me from dawn to dusk. I gave her sisters and watched and guided them as they spread to the forests around me.

For a time there was peace. Then others came, and I feared as they burned and ripped the silent ones down from their roots. I then felt glowing hot rage as the first of my daughters died directed those remaining to fight back, to make sure they too would not die. I watched them ride on hornets and wasps, as they dug beneath the earth for steel. As they brought back tributes of blood, these strange people that could not talk and ways of doing things.

It was war. For a time all we knew was war. Now it has ended and my proud daughters stand strong under my boughs to make sure it never happens again.
