  1. Ethan pushed the doors open and entered the restaurant slowly, inspecting the clientele without staring at them. He picked up a book of matches from the lobby counter, buying more time to scan the room. It was training, and by now habit, for him to memorize the layout of a room upon entry. He checked doorways, stairs, curtains; he noted who sat with their back to a wall and who sat at the tables with the best views of the entire room. He noted who sat near an exit and who, if anyone, wasn't dressed appropriately for their surroundings. And all the while he was doing this, Ethan moved casually toward the center of the room, where Eugene Kittridge was dining alone.
