  1. #SaveMinorities TWITTER PACKAGE V1.0
  2.
  3. :::::::OBJECTIVE:::::::
  4. Raise Awareness in social media regarding the the persecution of the minorities at the hands of the Awami League, most recently at Pabna, Sathia. From Ramu to Bishwajit and countless other incidents, the Awami League has a history of persecution of the minorities. Raise your voice. Join us.
  5.
  6. :::::BACKGROUND:::::
  7. There is a myth about Bangladesh Awami League that it is a party that adores secularism. There is a yawning gap between this perception and the reality. In fact it is the party under which members of minority community always face discrimination, torture and persecution. Some members of the minority do get privileged position as an eyewash but minority at large become subject of persecution, torture, land and property grabbing. The ruling Awami League and its allies have benefited in projecting their opposition, mainly Jamaat-e-Islami as fundamentally opposed to the rights and dignity of Bangladesh’s religious minorities. This strategy has been a historically profitable one, but one that recent evidence confounds.
  8.
  9. The truth is that the organisational capacity of Jamaat has been under sustained attack for well over three years. Local offices have been closed, regional leaders and organising cadres have been monitored and arrested in a systematic manner. Contrary to the advertised perception the organisation has gone out of its way to issue press statements, contest media reports and urge people to protect the Hindu and other minority communities.
  10.
  11. To keep a critical eye, it is worthwhile examining the Awami League’s record on minorities in light of recent experiences of its violent practices cynically leverage communal tensions for electoral, economic and personal gains. From Bishwajit to Ramu, the incidents over time implicating the Awami League as a fanner of communal tensions are too strong to be ignored. Is it not reasonable and simply politically responsible to ask whether the Awami League is really the protector of religious minorities in Bangladesh?

  171. Translation: Last Friday, temples were once again vandalised by Awami League Cadres in the village Kalirhat,Begomgong, Noakhali.
  172. Saha Alam, a local resident, informed that at 1am four or five cadres attacked the temples and smashed its boundary walls. When people started shouting for help, they left. Modusun Bhoumik, the president of the local temple association informed that last Friday they started renovating the temples with 8-10 workers. On that night, the mobs, including Yusuf and Saiful attacked the temples in a pre-planned manner. He also added that on 28th February they vandalised the temples in a similar way.
  173. The Police ASP of Begomgonj acknowledged the events of that night in the temple and said the mobs attacked the temple over the dispute of the temple’s land. He also said legal action will be taken against the mobs.
  174. It is worth noting that, on 28th February, worshippers from the general public and Jamaat-Shibir led a protest against Sayeedi’s death penalty verdict. Exactly at that time, mobs attacked, looted and vandalised some Hindu homes in the neighbouring village Aladinogor. But they media and people from a certain group used this outrageous wreckage to divert the attention and blamed Jamaat Shibir. They even attempted to blame Jamaat Shibir leaders who were not present in the area on that day.
  175. Deputy Commissioner of Noakhali, Omullo Kumar Das, one of the owners of the houses that were looted and the locals informed that this incident did not happen under the banner of any political party. Sarati Rani Das, a resident of the house, said a group of mobs entered the house with sticks and knives at late night and started looting. Even though the neighbouring Muslim came to help them, they were forced to flee in the fear of the weapons carried by the mobs. After looting, the mobs burned down the slum with gunpowder. Then they pillaged and vandalised the temples.
  176. Locals also informed that, the protesters did not enter their houses. A group of 16-17 year old boys from the local Mojumdarhat area were involved in these incidents with weapons. Police arrested 42 people who are alleged to be involved in these incidents.

  180.
  181. Incriminating evidence has been uncovered in light of an incident of arson against a Hindu family at a village in Laksham, Comilla. Local residents complained that the violence against the Dasbari residents was perpetrated by the local Awami League. They further added that the Hindu family was known to be a supporter of BNP. Thus it is only fair to say that this incident was caused to serve two ends, eliminate opposition supporters and incite communal tensions. Since the Das family rejected pressures to file cases against Jamaat and BNP activists, police themselves filed a case against a number of unidentified miscreants
  182.
  183. As events stand, on the 8th of March 2013, the house of Ratan Chandra Das, an expatriate residing in Kuwait, was set on fire at Uttarda village in Laksham. The fire destroyed their house and rendered them destitute. The Das family has informed that in connection with the vandalism carried out in the arson incident, miscreants looted 20 bhori gold, and let 11 mon paddy burn. The losses due to the fire have been attributed at about 20 lakh taka. Presently they lead appalling lives under the open sky.
  184.
  185. The Das family said that they have had good relations with the local Jamaat activists throughout their lives. Police at Laksham reiterated that there was no evidence indicative of Jamaat - Shibir involvement in these attacks. Rather, such attacks were indicative of a quarter who wanted to exploit the current political unrest and incidentally, put the blame on Jamaat-e-Islami
  186.
  187. Local residents said that Jamaat activists were not known to be unruly. This incident had been caused in order to instigate communal violence. To prevent any further violence by such quarters, local Jamaat and BNP activists were seen guarding houses and properties of the minority groups throughout the night.
  188.
  189. Fingers have been pointed by the residents at several local Awami League leaders and activists including Union Parishad Chairman and Awami League leader Golam Rabbani, so called local journalist and upazila Jubo League president Advocate Rafiqul Islam Hira and Awami League ex-party affairs secretary Tabarakullah Kayes.
  190.
  191. Violence carried out to instigate communal tensions:
  192. The people of Uttarda village at Laksham have stated that such events were in fact perpetrated by Awami League leaders and activists in order to destroy communal harmony. A section of the Awami League supporters, who were also local journalists in name, played an important role in prematurely and intentionally attributing the violence to Jamaat-Shibir even before the Das family filed a complaint with the police.
  193.
  194. Laksham thana police and locals said that there was no past history of local Jamaat and BNP being involved in violence against minority groups and no cases had been filed even in light of the recent nationwide unrest since neither of the parties had been seen on ground during recent strikes. Locals said that these events (arson on Hindu family property) had simply been manufactured in order to create issues to oppress the opposition.
  195.
  196. Speaking with concern, residents demanded that the police carefully investigate such incidents, identify the miscreants and take appropriate measures, going tough if necessary. Residents spoke of political pressure being mounted on the affected family to file cases against Jamaat, pressure it has refused to bow to even now. It has been found that Advocate Nitai Chandra Das, elder brother of Ratan Chandra, has been unable to attend to his law chamber due to threats and intimidation on part of ruling party members.
  197.
  198. The statement of the family of Ratan Chandra Das:
  199. Elder brother of Ratan, rural physician Dr. Gouranga Chandra Das, said that they have had good relations with the local Jamaat activists throughout their lives. He said that Muslim families had been among the first to heed to the cries of his family for help in downing the fire. Even now, they were guarding his family and property each night. Milon Rani Das, Ratan’s wife; Kalpana Rani Das and Kajol Rani Das, his elder sisters-in-law and Tanushree Das, his younger sister in law, told Amardesh, “ The Muslims living around us are not unruly. They always are among the first to help us in times of need. They are helping us even now. We know who might be our enemies at this time.” Kajol Rani Das said that they (the miscreants) are not from around our locality. They are from far away. The so called riots in Bangladesh today are a result of conspiracy of vested quarters, not riots between people of different religious faiths.” Speaking of the Chairman of the Union Parishad, they said that, “We do not need any Chairman. He came to give us consolation after the event. What will we do with any consolation? We don’t require any consolation.”
  200.
  201. Statement of police and local administration authorities:
  202. Laksham thana police, not gaining the help of the affected family, themselves filed a case. Police officials Abu Bakr, Mobarak Hossain and the respective IO officer of the case said that it was not possible to comment on how the fire spread, or who was involved in the attack. They however said that it was clear that it was an act of sabotage. However, there was no link suggesting that Jamaat Shibir was involved in this incident and that it was clear that vested quarters were involved in putting blame on Jamaat and Shibir. The investigation was in process. On asking why the Das family did not file any case, they replied that this was a question answerable by the family itself. They were police and filing such cases were part of their duty.
  203.
  204. On this, Comilla police super Mahbubur Rahman told Amardesh that investigation was being carried out against whomever allegations had been raised against by the residents. He claimed that this violence was part of a larger countrywide phenomenon of violence against minorities and assured that police investigation would lead to those responsible.
  205.
  206. However, voicing his disagreement, Laksham upazila Parishad Chairman Alhaj Mojir Ahmed informed Amardesh, “BNP-Jamaat were not involved in this violence. Even when the whole country was suffering from hartal related violence, Laksham was quiet and peaceful. This incident is a conspiracy to make BNP-Jamaat appear guilty of crimes they did not commit. Both police and the Das family know this. However, police are keeping quiet in order to avoid any conflict of interests with the government.”
  207.
  208. Mojir Ahmed further added, “Because of this knowledge, nobody has been able to force the Das family to file any false case in this regard.” He also added that it was common knowledge that many members of the Das family were BNP supporters. Talking about post violence events, Mojir Ahmed informed that local MP TR Kabikhar had given Tk 10,000 to the affected family in aid right after the violence, but had not taken any news of them since. Mojir said that he too had given the affected family Tk 10,000 in aid and demanded of the government the punishment of those involved in such vile acts.
  209.
  210. Statement of Local Awami League:
  211. Awami leaders who have been accused of involvement in the event by local people have told Amardesh that the incident was a case of vandalism and not any conspiracy. They said that the same family had been targeted earlier in 1990 communal riots (after the Babri Mosque issue) and thus it was natural that the same family was being targeted now.
  212.
  213. Local Jubo League president and local representative of news daily Dainik Bhorer Kaagoj, Advocate Rafiqul Islam Hira said, “ A day before the incident, BNP leaders in a procession said that the sanctity of the beard and Muslim cap should be protected at any cost. Therefore they were surely responsible for the incident of arson at night. Furthermore, that house was target of communal riots in 1990.”
  214.
  215. However, Hira could not answer why no cases had been filed by the affected against BNP-Jamaat men. After knowing of accusations that he was involved with the incident, he said, “See, I am not only a politician, I am a journalist as well. Why would we (Awami League) carry out such instances of violence? They (the affected Hindu family) are after all, our supporters.” Similarly accused Union Parishad Chairman Golam Rabbani said, “I am in no way involved with this incident. They (the affected Hindu family) are Awami League supporters. We want their well being. Why should we be involved in this violence?” On informing him of claims of local residents that Nitai Chandra Das was in fact a BNP supported leader, Rabbani replied, “Nitai alone supports the BNP. And the rest (of his family) supports the Awami League.” On asking him why he didn’t go to visit the house of the affected, he replied, “Will going there solve everything? They (Das family) don’t know what I am doing for them.”
  216.
  217. Leading desolate lives:
  218. The Das family have been leading desolate lives since losing everything to the fire. Milon Rani Das, with her two small children, has been spending the nights sleeping under the open sky. Only a few days ago they had erected the now burnt house, lamented the mother of two. “I ask all to come forward to help us”, she said with grief stricken eyes.

  226. Dhaka:- BNP standing committee member, Goyeshor Chondro Roy stated, that Jamaat did not play any role in the recent communal riots. “History has witnessed that Jamaat has never been involved in any communal riot since its creation in 1946. In all the cases the arrestees were found to be Awami League members”. He made this statement at a meeting in Bhashani Hall, Naya Paltan. He was the chief guest and the meeting was arranged by Krishok Dol, (Farmer’s Party, a branch of BNP), to celebrate Independence Day of Bangladesh (on 24th March).
  227.
  228. Roy also stated, “Shahbag has failed and thus the government has brought forward ‘communal violence’ issues. Awami League (the incumbent government) itself carried out the violence and wants to put the blame on BNP/Jamaat alliance. The same court is passing conflicting verdicts on different people, given the same charges and circumstances.”
  229. “Courts are handing their verdicts based on the appearance of a person(on basis of Awami League affiliation)”, he complained.
  230. Roy said the Government has become autocratic and is using the judiciary and police, with a small handful of followers, to carry out its policies of repression.
  231. “Police have been given a license to kill people indiscriminately.” he further commented.
  232. Roy cautioned the government saying, “They will have to step down eventually, and how will they feel if we use the same repressive policies and administration against them.”
  233. He said people fought the liberation war and vast majority had returned to their own professions afterwards; and only a minority had joined the fight for the purpose of looting to become rich.
  234.
  235. Others who addressed the meeting were: BNP vice chairperson, Ms Selima Rahman; chairman of Jubo Dol, Mojaeem Hossain Alal; krishok Dol leader, Jamal Uddin; and was chaired by Krishok Dol Secretary, Shamsuzzaman Dudoo.

  290. Summary: In a recent Amar Desh Op-Ed, a Hindu commentator Shanjib Choudhury argued that it is highly unlikely that the party, already accused of being ‘communal’ in their politics, would not engage in something so foolish as this at a time when they are being persecuted themselves and under serious scrutiny.

  361. According to eyewitnesses, on last Tuesday a rally in support of strike was led by Mizaanur Rahman from Zero point to Kamaruddin college. On their way home, the rally participants were attacked by the ruling party supporters, resulting in street fights and chase-counter chase. Awamileague supporters have beaten up some BNP supporters and handed them over to police. Before police arrived at the scene, Awamileague-Juboleague supporters have set fire to a few abandoned properties belonging to Kartik Das and Sona Das. They then spread a rumour over mobile phones that Hindu minorities were being attacked and their properties were being arson and looted by BNP-Jamaat.

  368. Jamaat for judicial probe into attacks on minorities
  369. WEDNESDAY, 06TH MARCH, 2013
  370. Acting Ameer of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, Moqbul Ahmed has issued the following statement condemning the recent attacks and persecution on the minorities:
  371. \\\\\\\"The Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami condemns the syndicated, unsubstantiated and malicious reporting by a number of newspapers including the Daily Star and Prothom Alo on 5 March, 2013, where without any specific evidence; they have alleged that members of Jamaat carried out attacks on minorities all over Bangladesh. These reports have been published with a deliberate view to fuel sectarian violence, by newspapers which have long been supporting the call for banning Jamaat in recent times.
  372. Jamaat categorically states that none of its members were responsible for the reported attacks. In fact Jamaat has issued strict orders to its member to protect the lives and properties of minorities in light of the saying of the Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) ‘whoever harms a non-Muslim will not enter paradise’. In fact in its numerous press statements Jamaat has condemned the attacks on minorities. Jamaat will continue to condemn all such attacks on minorities.
  373. Moreover, Jamaat-e-Islami conducted preliminary investigation has revealed that local Awami League leaders and activists along with the assistance of the different government agencies have carried out these attacks to deflect the public attention from the crimes against humanity being committed by the police.
  374. We, therefore call upon the Government to set up an independent judicial enquiry to probe into the incidents in order to take swift legal measures against the perpetrators. In the meantime we call upon the people to resist all such unfortunate attacks on minorities

  382. Shafiqur Rahman Shafique from Sherpur (Bogra); Local residents today apprehended a Juboleague [youth branch of the ruling Awamileague] leader when he led a group of Juboleague members to ransack the Shaheed Minaar located at Shahidia Alia Madrasah. His name is Tobibur Rahman Tipu. He is a joint-convenor in the local Juboleague committee. The local ruling party MP, Habibur Rahman, has condemned the attack. He has said that anyone involved with this incident should be punished.
  383.
  384. On Tuesday at around 3pm, a group of about 10-12 members of the local Juboleague committee (youth wing of ruling Awami league party in govt) led by Tipu attacked on the Shaheed Minaar within Shahidia Alia Madrasah. As they started ransacking the newly built centre-pillar of the Shaheed Minaar, some local residents chased them away. During this, a joint convenor of the Juboleague city branch , Tobibur Rahman Tipu was apprehended and handed over to the police. The ex-mayor of Sherpur and an adviser of BNP Bogra branch has said that the general strike was observed very peacefully, we we avoided any clashes during the strike, but the local Juboleague members attacked on the Shaheed Minaar in broad daylight. We condemn this and want justice. The ruling party MP for Bogra-5 and the chairman of the Shahidia Madrasah governing committee, Mr Habibur Rahman, has confirmed that the attack did take place but said that this was a careful plan [by the opposition party], but whoever was involved must be punished. He has strongly condemned the incident.
