  7. Chapter Two: A New Lease On Life
  8.
  9. A night had passed since Isis had left the cliffside ruin. When she left, it was midday; she had walked until nightfall, reaching a small oasis to the east edge of the island. The water was clean and sparkling, coming up from broken water lines to an old Master System ruin Isis had passed. A look inside the ruin that night nearly drowned her, as it had flooded full of water.
  10.
  11. Isis opened her eyes slowly, to find she was lying down on a soft bed of some sort. Her armor had been taken off, resting on a table across the room. The room itself was small, wallpaper fading in spots and cracking in others, the floorboards creaking ever so slightly with each step Isis took.
  12.
  13. She stepped out of this room to find a woman sitting there on a sofa reading, a blue dress hugging her form. The woman looked up. "I see you're awake," she said. "A friend of mine helped bring you back to the city. You didn't have a Rebreather with that armor of yours, so we had to save you before..."
  14.
  15. She paused, a worried look on her face. "It's all right, ma'am. I'm fine now." Isis sat with the woman. "Thank you."
  16.
  17. "You wouldn't happen to be a Digger, would you?" The woman asked. "Your armor matched what Diggers usually wear on ruin hunts."
  18.
  19. "No, I'm not." Isis was puzzled by this. "What exactly is a Digger?"
  20.
  21. "You don't know?" The woman was stunned. "A Digger is someone who ventures into ruins all around the world, exploring them to find Refractors so we can live our lives like normal. Almost every machine on this planet that isn't found in a ruin uses Refractors to work."
  22.
  23. "So I see," Isis replied. "I'm sorry, I should know this from the start, but I don't. I'm... not exactly a normal person." She looked down at her bandages. "You've probably already figured it out, haven't you?"
  24.
  25. "If you mean the fact that you're a machine, then yes. When we got you in the bedroom last night to let you rest, I thought I'd change your bandages. I assumed that you had been hurt badly, and you needed them redressed. But by the time I had them almost all the way removed, I saw your spine under them, and then I noticed the seams in your body. I saw how the bandages were coming out of them, so I couldn't remove them the rest of the way... I didn't feel it was necessary to let my friend know this, so I urged him to leave to let you rest." The woman sighed. "I never knew Reaverbots could be human in form, though, let alone truly docile."
  26.
  27. "I'm not exactly the same as a Reaverbot, though," Isis said. "I was originally designed to fight and destroy Reaverbots that became violent. You could say I was fired from that job, though." She said nothing more on that subject, even when the woman pressed for the info; Isis felt it was better to let her caretaker know she was friendly--which she was--than to think she was broken in the mind, like an Abberant. A little white lie.
  28.
  29. That day, Isis and her caretaker--the proprietor of the local General Store, she discovered--went out on a tour of the city, to get her land legs back. The city of Kimotoma was the only one on the vast desert island, and had been there for years. It was home to a large, expansive ruin locked by the people, because the last few Diggers to explore the ruin made reports of a large Reaverbot below that was none too friendly.
  30.
  31. Isis was intrigued by this knowledge. A large ruin, protected by what sounded like a Xth-Class Guardian Unit? Something of great value must be here, she thought. It's probably best if I find a way off the island as soon as possible.
  32.
  33. They passed by the ruin's entrance, entering the main plaza of the shopping bazaar. The storekeeper stopped by her stand, which was being run by a young boy at the time. "How're you doing?" She asked.
  34.
  35. "Pretty well, considering not many people have stopped by, ma'am." The boy looked at Isis. "Is this the Digger you found outside the city limits?" He asked. Isis nodded. "Yes, I am. My name's Isis."
  36.
  37. The boy shook her hand. "Miss Elise asked me to run the shop while she was taking care of you. It's nice to meet you," he said. "Have you seen the airships coming into town? I caught the view of one just a while ago. It's docked in the plaza near the ruin gate."
  38.
  39. Great, Isis thought. That might just be my way away from here. She grinned, and turned to Elise. "Diggers ride these airships?" She asked, a curious look growing on her face; she had to keep a good appearance up, after all. Elise nodded in response. "Then if you wouldn't mind, I'd like to go meet them!" A smile broke upon her face, a sort of cheerful naieveté making itself clear.
  40.
  41. Elise and Isis made their way to the plaza, passing the ruin gate on the way. Indeed, Isis got a dark vibe from it. Just as I thought, she said to herself. That ruin only means trouble. I'm getting out of here as soon as I can. She would have processed more on this, if she had not stopped in awe of the two airships docked in the plaza.
  42.
  43. One of them was a cozy-looking ship vaguely resembling a flying houseboat, silver and red in color; the other, you couldn't even call an airship, as it resembled more of a dropship than anything. Out of the back of the dropship, a young man poked his head.
  44.
  45. He was covered in soot, assumedly from his dropship's engine. He had scruffy-looking black hair, as if he hadn't washed it in weeks and ended up with a bad case of bedhead. His eyes, after he pulled off his goggles, were as green as Isis'; if she didn't know better, the Purifier might've mistaken him for a System Unit herself. His jeans were frayed and torn, the teal T-shirt's bottom sticking out of a padded silver body armor on his upper chest. He wore only that armor; Isis guessed he wasn't much of a successful Digger.
  46.
  47. The young man walked over to the houseboat-airship, and started bickering with a very cross pair of Diggers. One was a man with teal hair and an orange shirt, the other a young girl with a hat resembling cat ears.
  48.
  49. "This is the sort you want to play yourself as?" Elise asked Isis quietly. The former Purifier scratched her head. "Well, if it gets me a living..."
