  6. [2015-10-14 13:11:23] <Mare-Do-Well> 3Golden_Dream touches the door and gives it a good sniff. If it's fire, it'll smell like ashes and, well. Long Brahmin meat. If it's worse, it'll smell of rotten long brahmin meat and fire. She grumbles. "Never go anywhere nice."
  7. [2015-10-14 13:11:34] <Mare-Do-Well> 3Noble_Heart shudders slightly and frowns. "We shall have to give these zebras a proper burial before we leave this town." She moves to open the rear door carefully. "Be prepared to hold your breath. This may be dangerous."

  9. [2015-10-14 13:12:03] <Mare-Do-Well> 3Golden_Dream slowly attempts to open the door, holding her shotgun dear.

  11. [2015-10-14 13:12:21] <Mare-Do-Well> 3Just beyond the door is a platform, and metal stairs leading down into the mines. It is utterly dark here. But below, the mines glow with a feeble orange light.

  16. [2015-10-14 13:15:09] * Noble_Heart scowls. "We cannot leave yet. Not only is this where Xero is hiding. But this was where the Zebras constructed their megaspells. If there remain Balefire bombs, or the means to create them, this is where they will be." She lights her horn and begins her descent into the darkness.
  17. [2015-10-14 13:15:40] * Mitzi pats Bookwright on the shoulder. "Uh'll keep yu safe. Under ground eez where Uh eez best."
  18. [2015-10-14 13:18:04] * CopyCat trots along with a bounce in her step that wasn't quite as bouncey as normal, on account of being underground and too much bouncing resulting in a bonk on her head (which is where the hard hat comes in!) but was still failry bouncy nonetheless.

  21. [2015-10-14 13:22:01] <Mare-Do-Well> 3The coal mines are a dark maze filled with poisonous gas, dull orange light and a continuous low crackling from multiple coal seems that have been burning for over two hundred years.

  23. [2015-10-14 13:23:22] * Noble_Heart stoops her head slightly to ensure she doesn't hit her horn on the ceiling. Keeping ahead of the group she checks her PipBuck's map now and then. She might not be well versed in how exactly it worked, but it wasn't that hard to read a basic map of the area.

  27. [2015-10-14 13:32:39] * Shatara isn't too uncomfortable underground, but this is like...the Stable's evil twin. And the good twin wasn't particularly pleasant either.
  28. [2015-10-14 13:33:41] * CopyCat starts to cough, her bouncing unfortunately on hold as the ceiling got lower and more tunnel-y. "The coal fire's *cough cough* still this bad after all this *cough cough* time?"
  29. [2015-10-14 13:35:16] * Mitzi knows nothing of coal or the workings if fire beyond using it to cook things.
  30. [2015-10-14 13:35:40] <Mare-Do-Well> 3Ahead, a motorized coal cart lays tipped and askew across blackened tracks. The metal remains of mining equipment lies scattered about.
  31. [2015-10-14 13:36:00] * Berry is looking around, it would be a lie if it was said that she was at ease "how do we find the stable?"
  32. [2015-10-14 13:36:51] * Golden_Dream looks around, cautiously. "Smart money's on it bein' on th' bottom.
  33. [2015-10-14 13:37:15] * Noble_Heart steps carefully past the cart. "Coal burns long and hot. But to still be burning for so long, there must be prodigious amounts of it here." She checks her map again. "That is a good question. Surely it would be well protected. Likely somewhere the miners wouldn't disturb it or wander into it."
  34. [2015-10-14 13:37:45] * Mitzi asks of the group: "Wud Eet be easier tu go straight dere?"
  35. [2015-10-14 13:38:27] * CopyCat exhales and takes a deep breath (then has to take another after a quick coughing fit) before focusing. Her horn lights up and a shine envelopes her Friends. "Ahhh..." she sighs, the spell casting and a light washing over each of them. The heat and even the smoke become much more bearable. Downright pleasant, in fact. CopyCat breathes easy and smiles. "There. Much better."
  36. [2015-10-14 13:40:01] <Mare-Do-Well> 3A little further beyond, the charred form of an arthropodic mining robot lies disfunctional next to the tracks.
  37. [2015-10-14 13:41:08] * Mitzi checks the robot for leftover power cells now that Copycats spell has her breathing better and sweating less
  38. [2015-10-14 13:42:09] <Mare-Do-Well> 3The robot does have remaining power cells in fair condition -- dead, but rechargeable.
  39. [2015-10-14 13:43:07] * Berry follows and takes a look at the robot "we can rebuild it. stronger. smarter. we have the technology"
  40. [2015-10-14 13:43:56] * Mitzi isn't entirely sure how they compared to the ones in her weapons. She looks to Get_Lost. "Yu want take any pieces?"
  41. [2015-10-14 13:44:09] * Get_Lost for a moment, felt like a donkey
  42. [2015-10-14 13:49:01] * Bookwright cleans his glasses /again./ "Let's not stop for too long, okay?"
  43. [2015-10-14 13:49:42] * Get_Lost nodnods and starts working on the dead bot
  44. [2015-10-14 13:52:47] <Mare-Do-Well> 3Some of the bots internals are fried, but the amount of damage that it has suffered from being on fire, and being in this environment is much less that Get_Lost would expect. Zebras did some fine engineering.
  45. [2015-10-14 13:56:02] * Get_Lost rigs a couple of cables, bypasses fried circuitry and tries running a diagnosys
  46. [2015-10-14 14:01:24] * Mitzi waits for Get_Lost to finish working, then she would collect the power cells to have Bookwright look at them later
  47. [2015-10-14 14:03:03] * Golden_Dream coughs. "You got it." Another coughing fit.
  48. [2015-10-14 14:03:25] <Mare-Do-Well> 3Get_Lost's efforts are successful. The damage is substantial enough that the robot's days as a mining droid are done. Diagnostics of the robot reveals a change of programming shortly before going offline. The robot received an update that shifted it from mining protocols to emergency security protocols.
  49. [2015-10-14 14:03:39] * CopyCat lets Get_Lost work on the robot and instead turns her attention to the fallen motorized minecart. "Shatara, could you take a look at this with me?"
  50. [2015-10-14 14:05:15] * Noble_Heart looks up and down the tunnels. "Perhaps we should follow the rail lines? They typically lead to places of import."
  51. [2015-10-14 14:05:20] * CopyCat approaches the toppled cart. "Do you think we could get it to work again?... and maybe ride in it, perhaps?"
  52. [2015-10-14 14:05:36] <Mare-Do-Well> 3The source of the damage seems to be neither the heat, fire or smoke. Rather, the update card was not installed properly, leading to an internal short.
  53. [2015-10-14 14:06:23] * Shatara blinks and pokes at the mine cart a bit, looking over the workings of its exposed underside.
  54. [2015-10-14 14:08:06] * Get_Lost frowns "the robots were programmed for emergency... but it won't work again... guys, recover whatever you need and let's go"
  55. [2015-10-14 14:09:06] <Mare-Do-Well> 3The motorized mine cart seems to be in fair condition. Shatara is certain he could get it working again with a little maintenance and some recharged alchemical batteries (or an alternate but compatible power source).
  56. [2015-10-14 14:12:44] * Mitzi pulls out the energy cells such as they were and stores them
  57. [2015-10-14 14:14:49] * Bookwright "Well? What's the prognosis?"
  58. [2015-10-14 14:15:27] * Get_Lost salvages the robot and goes offering a hoof to the birdcat "hey cutie, can i help somehow?"
  59. [2015-10-14 14:17:12] * Shatara mrfs quietly to the others. "It...seems servicable. But out of power."
  60. [2015-10-14 14:17:20] * CopyCat pouts when she hears that even a birb of Shatara's skill would need time to get it working again. "Well I guess we could come back for it maybe..." she looks at the cart mournfully. "Someday Princess Battlewagon. Someday."
  61. [2015-10-14 14:18:21] * Bookwright "I've got some spark batteries, would those work?"
  62. [2015-10-14 14:18:56] * Shatara hmms. "Possibly..."
  63. [2015-10-14 14:19:48] * CopyCat turns back to Noble_Heart, who must have had the patience of a saint. "I think we're /nearly/ finished being distracted. Nearly."
  64. [2015-10-14 14:20:26] * Bookwright digs through his saddlebags for a moment. "Here we go." A quartet of spark batteries float out and into Shatara's waiting talons.
  65. [2015-10-14 14:20:28] * Noble_Heart nods her head to CopyCat, taking a look down the side passages. She had become used to her friends being taken by their passions, after all
  66. [2015-10-14 14:24:02] * Shatara sets the batteries down beside the cart and hmms. It'll probably still take a bit to fix it..."
  67. [2015-10-14 14:24:33] * Mitzi slips around in front of the Mine cart and sits, looking out like a good watchdog.
  68. [2015-10-14 14:27:13] * CopyCat joins Noble_Heart and glances back at Shatara and Get_Lost and the others as they work together. She smiles. "Other than the urge to see if I could ride the cart along the tracks," she tells Noble, "I thought we might enounter some kind of security in the tunnel which would automatically let a minecart pass." She turns to look at the way ahead. "Unlikely, perhaps, but it could still be useful."
  69. [2015-10-14 14:28:47] * Noble_Heart nods her head and contemplates that. "It is possible. Though We have difficulty imagining coal being integral to the creation of Balefire, stranger things have been found."
  70. [2015-10-14 14:30:18] <Shatara> "It's useful for forging metal or generating power, though..."
  71. [2015-10-14 14:37:32] <CopyCat> "And riding around in little carts..." CopyCat prompts.
  72. [2015-10-14 14:42:28] * Golden_Dream quirks an ear.
  73. [2015-10-14 14:51:58] <Mare-Do-Well> 3After some work, some spark batteries, and a little assistance from Get_Lost, Shatara has the motorized cart back on the tracks and running. The motor makes a mildly displeased chugging sound (something that would need much fresher parts to fix), but should remain functional for several hours of duty.
  74. [2015-10-14 14:54:31] * Shatara takes a moment to let out a mad cackle that would make Get proud
  75. [2015-10-14 14:56:31] * Bookwright "Shatara? Before we proceed any further, I think it would be wise to armor everypony up with that recon armor we fixed up back in the temple."
  76. [2015-10-14 14:59:52] * CopyCat pats the mine cart proudly. "I knew you two could do it, Shatara and Get Lost! Shall we have it run along with us as we go?"
  77. [2015-10-14 15:03:11] * Mitzi looks at the cart curiously. "Zebras have wierd ting fur mineen."
  78. [2015-10-14 15:04:08] * Noble_Heart ruffles her feathers slightly. "There is much danger left to be found down here. We should certainly be careful."
  79. [2015-10-14 15:09:00] * Shatara would be happy to help the others with armor.
  80. [2015-10-14 15:10:28] <Mare-Do-Well> 3Once armor is sorted, the group is underway. The cart allows for much faster travel, but at the cost of stealth.
  81. [2015-10-14 15:12:12] * CopyCat cheers. "Wheeeeeee!"
  82. [2015-10-14 15:12:57] * Noble_Heart being a rather large, rather obvious alicorn, does not usually concern herself with stealth. And today is no exception.
  83. [2015-10-14 15:13:33] <Mare-Do-Well> 3A few minutes down the track, they come to a circular switch, with mines tunnels heading in multiple directions. There is a structure here labeled (according to CopyCat and Parlay) part of the Central Valley Mining Consortium. The door was once locked, but someone in the last two hundred years bashed the door in.
  84. [2015-10-14 15:14:18] * CopyCat is super stealthy though. Yes. Especially when she rides in a loud minecart while cheering. With her horn shining.
  85. [2015-10-14 15:16:03] <Mare-Do-Well> 3In the vicinity are several non-motorized, link-able carts. More than enough to turn their repaired mechanical cart into a train that can carry everyone comfortably.
  86. [2015-10-14 15:18:47] * CopyCat gasps, her eyes wide, and puts on the brakes. "Stop!" She lights up the other carts with her horn. CopyCat grins. "We gotta make a train!"
  87. [2015-10-14 15:19:36] * Bookwright nods, pleased that CopyCat's imagination matches his.
  88. [2015-10-14 15:20:41] * Mitzi chuckles a bit, but then looks around the junction curiously. She taps Noble_Heart on the shoulder and asks to see the map. She did, afterall, learn much of mining from her father, who had lived in Splendid Valley.
  89. [2015-10-14 15:22:41] * Noble_Heart offered her foreleg for Mitzi to inspect. "It seems there are yet more tracks to be followed besides those we need. Side tracks, as they were."
  90. [2015-10-14 15:23:01] * Mitzi inspects the map as it was, and looks around the junction to see how much she can make sense of it.
  91. [2015-10-14 15:25:53] <Mare-Do-Well> 3Mitzi comes to two conclusions. First, that they really haven't seen enough of the mines to make a determination. They are entering it from a "back door" as it were, and have really only seen one small branch. But at the same time, such a junction should have markings to help miners navigate. Or, barring that (and she doesn't see any), a nearby map.
  92. [2015-10-14 15:26:44] * Mitzi starts sniffing around for a map, although she also keeps her nose peeled for the smell of burnt paper, which seemed an entirely reasonable possibility
  93. [2015-10-14 15:29:14] * CopyCat and the others soon have a train made up out of the mine carts (with a lot of help from Shatara getting them actually attached). "We should be ready to continue whenever everyone's ready!" She tilts her head at their friendly hellhound. "Are you looking for something, Mitzi?"
  94. [2015-10-14 15:29:47] * Bookwright happily plops into a minecart and grins. "This is gonna be fun!"
  95. [2015-10-14 15:29:50] * Mitzi looks back at CopyCat, "Lukeen fur map. Junction shud have un, ur sumteen tu say wut's which way."
  96. [2015-10-14 15:33:58] <Mare-Do-Well> 3Mitzi's investigations have turned up nothing map-like. But in the process have taken her into the structure. An office of sorts, which appears to have been crudely looted. Busted lockers, torn wall hooks, and a shattered lockbox.
  97. [2015-10-14 15:34:30] * CopyCat blinks, almost overcome by sheer sensibleness. "That's... a very good idea, Mitzi." She turns to Bookwright sitting in the cart behind her. "Can you do your glowy-thingy to look for maps or stuff like that?"
  98. [2015-10-14 15:34:32] * Mitzi frowns. "Sumun been tru here. Aneeun wanna luk more closely fur not brokeen tings?"
  99. [2015-10-14 15:35:02] * Bookwright nods, and expands his perception.
  100. [2015-10-14 15:35:41] * CopyCat hops out of the cart for now, and joins Mitzi in lukin' fur tings.
  101. [2015-10-14 15:35:45] * Shatara looks up from coupling the minecarts. "Stuff? Whur?"
  102. [2015-10-14 15:36:23] * CopyCat shows solidarity with Mitzi by finding absolutely nothing!
  103. [2015-10-14 15:36:49] * Mitzi doesn't seem off put by not finding anything, given the signs of previous looting
  104. [2015-10-14 15:37:11] <Mare-Do-Well> 3It takes but an instant for Bookwright to locate something of interest. On the wall of the office are several pictures mounted behind glass in metal frames. The glass has turned black from the smoke. But whatever is behind the glass is waiting for a good cleaning to reveal it.
  105. [2015-10-14 15:37:21] * Noble_Heart stands watch in the junction. She wasn't much good at looking for things, and knew where her real talents were.
  106. [2015-10-14 15:38:36] * Bookwright points to the office wall. "In case of mine fire, break glass. By which I mean, break that glass. Or wipe it clean or something."
  107. [2015-10-14 15:38:58] * Mitzi looks to the frames and begins gently pulling them off the walls. Maybe there was something behind them.
  108. [2015-10-14 15:40:09] <Mare-Do-Well> 3The frames are bolted to the wall. Mitzi's claws prove more than sufficient to remove them.
  109. [2015-10-14 15:40:45] * Mitzi is looking for a safe or other secret compartments behind them, although them being bolted seems to preclude that. Safes were usually hidden behind things more easily moved aside
  110. [2015-10-14 15:43:09] * Golden_Dream offers a bottle of dish soap to Bookie.
  111. [2015-10-14 15:44:22] * Bookwright sets to work cleaning, using his extensive floorboard-toothbrush cleaning experience.
  112. [2015-10-14 15:49:16] <Mare-Do-Well> 3Bookwright's cleaning reveals a map labeled (as translated by Parlay) "Central Valley Mines - Section C".
  113. [2015-10-14 15:50:33] * Shatara pokes around through the remains of the various looted containers
  114. [2015-10-14 15:50:57] <Mare-Do-Well> 3The map reveals rather extensive tunneling under the valley -- this section being the mines directly beneath the town of Sunshine Meadows -- with many dead-end passages and a hoof-full of tunnels leading to other Sections.

[2015-10-14 15:53:39] <Mare-Do-Well> 3The map does mark several potential "emergency passages" out of the mines, including the one into the school's basement shelter, and a similar one into a theater. It does not reveal the location of Vault LIV... but one of the tunnels that goes off the map (supposedly towards Section D) is labeled as "ACCESS RESTRICTED PER ROAM".

  118. [2015-10-14 15:55:46] <Mare-Do-Well> 3A look at the map tells Mitzi that Central Valley must be home to several converging seams of coal.
  119. [2015-10-14 15:56:10] * Golden_Dream raises it up in the air. A jaunty tune rings out in her head. After she realizes what she's doing, she puts it back in her things, blushing. Copycat's been rubbing off her.
  120. [2015-10-14 15:57:10] * Mitzi nods and looks around the group. "Dat coal stuff, ur sumteen else valuable, dere's a lot of eet all cumeen tugethur here. Dat's why dis place center Uh tink."

  125. [2015-10-14 16:15:32] * Mitzi looks to Golden_Dream, "Uh meant da tings da mine was meant tu dig up. DAt coal stuff maybe."
  126. [2015-10-14 16:15:56] * Noble_Heart followed the others into the house, nwo that they were all apparently in the same place. "It is likely the coal veins coincide here. Or perhaps something rarer. Balefire was made of necromancy and dragonfire. Perhaps a dragon once made its home here?"
  127. [2015-10-14 16:16:55] * Mitzi shakes her head at Noble_Heart, "Dragons like gems. Dey wudeen't like dis coal stuff anee more den Ur kind."
  128. [2015-10-14 16:17:20] * Golden_Dream slumps. "Oh. I thought you were sayin'..." She sneezes. "Nevermind. I like goin' t' places I'm not allowed by order of long dead civilizations. There tends t' be some neat loot there." She points at Section D). "Everyone down fer'
  129. [2015-10-14 16:17:41] <Golden_Dream> a little archaeological larceny?"
  130. [2015-10-14 16:18:35] * Noble_Heart nods her head. "It seems likely that that is where we shall find this Vault of LIV."
  131. [2015-10-14 16:21:11] * Shatara nods. "I doubt 'secret balefire bomb factory' would be marked on the map."
  132. [2015-10-14 16:21:17] * Bookwright narrows his eyes. "Normally I would disagree with you, but... Well. Looks like we'll have to."
  133. [2015-10-14 16:21:38] * Mitzi then looks at the map, then around to the group, "Du yu tink dere maybe eeze gems here though?"
  134. [2015-10-14 16:26:55] * Bookwright shakes his head. "Few, if any. The zebras had scarce gem resources. If we find any, they'll probably be mined already."
  135. [2015-10-14 16:27:21] * Mitzi seems rather disappointed by that. "Coal eez ugly."
  136. [2015-10-14 16:32:40] * Golden_Dream shrugs. "Hey, we'll be back in the Crystal Kingdom soon.

[2015-10-14 16:32:43] <Mare-Do-Well> 3Minutes later, the caravan-pirate-hero group of friends is chugging down the tracks, through mines of fiery walls and poisoned smoke, on a train of mining carts. The tracks pass over a blackened metal bridges that overlooks a pit glowing like the mouth of hell.

  139. [2015-10-14 16:33:36] <Mare-Do-Well> 3The race by metal stairwells, twisted by the heat. And the hulks of large mining machines.
  140. [2015-10-14 16:35:52] <Mare-Do-Well> 3As the cart train rushes past a cross-tunnel, two arthropodic mining robots spin about at the noise, their dim mining lamps looking like angry eyes as they scurry in pursuit.
  141. [2015-10-14 16:36:33] * CopyCat dabs at Get Lost's drooling mouth as they pass the large mining machines... an eeeps as they pass the active robots!
  142. [2015-10-14 16:39:23] * Noble_Heart looks back as the robots pursue them. "We may have to repel boarders shortly!"
  143. [2015-10-14 16:39:49] <Mare-Do-Well> 3As the cart rumbles around a bend, the mining drones chase after it, one of them scurrying partway up the wall. The robots are gaining.
  144. [2015-10-14 16:41:19] <Mare-Do-Well> 3Shatara, Noble_Heart and Golden_Dream all notice their PipBucks detect a brief signal. A burst, there then gone.
  145. [2015-10-14 16:41:44] * Shatara flails a little. "Wait! There was a thing!"
  146. [2015-10-14 16:41:50] * Golden_Dream checks her pipbuck for a radio signal!

  153. [2015-10-14 16:55:01] <Mare-Do-Well> 3The arthropodic mining robot is blown back, collapsing beside the track as the cart-train races by, the robots behind it scurrying around or over its damaged body. The drone is still functional somewhat functional, but unable to pursue.

  155. [2015-10-14 17:16:51] * Golden_Dream raises her shotgun. "LEAVE US ALONE OR-" Oh for fuck's sake they're robots. She wasn't looking forward to firing this thing in these tunnels, this is more tinnitus waiting to happen.

  158. [2015-10-14 17:30:43] <Mitzi> With the robots gaining on them, but not quite in reach, Mitzi pulls the plasma rifle off her back and looses three shots into the nearest target

  160. [2015-10-14 17:36:18] * Mitzi frowns. These weapons were okay, but they just weren't as fast and penetrating as her claws.
  161. [2015-10-14 17:40:35] * Shatara takes aim at the undamaged robot first, firing a potent pulse slug into it.
  162. [2015-10-14 17:59:10] <Mare-Do-Well> 3Shatara's first shot does serious damage to the undamaged robot, but is not enough to stop it.
