- Homework: p. 66 part B - decide whether or not each “going to” will be pronounced “gonna”
- ---
- It’s very common (even in formal situations) to pronounce “gonna”, but it’s very informal to write it.
- (We can write it when texting or chatting with friends or posting on social media, because these are usually very informal situations.)
- ---
- Other reduced pronunciations that are common to write (in American English):
- wanna = want to (+ verb)
- shoulda/coulda/woulda
- gotta = (have) got to (+ verb)
- dunno = don’t know
- finna = fixing to (= planning to)
- ---
- p. 70 - Choose the correct words to complete each expression.
- 1 Dutch
- 2 doggie
- 3 down (cut down on sugar = reduce sugar; cut out sugaer = remove sugar)
- 4 bite
- 5 skip
- 6 tooth
- 7 on
- 8 pig (remember: “wolf down” also means to eat something quickly)
- 9 eyes
- 10 side
- (You can have “toppings” on pizza and ice cream, or for example waffles and pancakes, because the toppings go on top of that food.)
- 11 leftovers
- 12 chocolate (the others would be spelled “chalkaholic” and “chokaholic”, if the words existed)
- ---
- comparing apples and oranges = comparing two different things
- We can also compare “chalk and cheese” to make this same point.
- ---
- You can grab a bite or a cab.
- A flight, a restaurant, or a hotel can be booked solid.
- He doesn’t live anywhere near the city. I have to drive way out to the boonies.
- I don’t like impersonal hotels. I prefer to stay in a B&B.
- The jetlag was really bad after my flight from China so I was wiped out when I arrived in the morning. Then I drank coffee all day so now that it’s night, I’m wired and won’t be able to sleep.
- My original flight was booked solid so they put me on standby. Then the first available flight was the red-eye so I arrived at 2am.
