Foxconn points out that this is the third such raise since 2010, and that three years ago, their workers received 900 yuan per month.\r\n\r\n\"As a top manufacturing company in China, the basic salary of junior workers in all of Foxconn's China factories is already far higher than the minimum wage set by all local governments,\" a statement from Foxconn said.\r\n\r\n\"We will provide more training opportunities and learning time, and will continuously enhance technology, efficiency and salary, so as to set a good example for the Chinese manufacturing industry.\"\r\n\r\nIn addition to the raise, Apple has previously agreed to an independent investigation of their manufacturing facilities by their Fair Labor Association, seemingly in response to a New York Times investigation into unsafe working conditions.\r\n\r\nIt proves that companies like Foxconn and Apple, to a point, can be responsive to consumer concerns. As I pointed out last week, while neither Apple nor Foxconn may be particularly noteworthy in a landscape where oppressive working conditions are par for the course, consumers who came to trust Apple's brand found themselves uncomfortable about having formed a loyalty to a company that they now saw as unethical.\r\n\r\nStill, this doesn't make Foxconn some kind of worker's paradise. As Gizmodo points out:\r\n\r\n\"1,800 yuan is about $285, meaning around $10 a day, or less than a dollar per hour. Foxconn points out that this is the third such raise since 2010, and that three years ago, their workers received 900 yuan per month.
\n
“As a top manufacturing company in China, the basic salary of junior workers in all of Foxconn’s China factories is already far higher than the minimum wage set by all local governments,” a statement from Foxconn said.
\n
“We will provide more training opportunities and learning time, and will continuously enhance technology, efficiency and salary, so as to set a good example for the Chinese manufacturing industry.”
\n
In addition to the raise, Apple has previously agreed to an independent investigation of their manufacturing facilities by their Fair Labor Association, seemingly in response to a New York Times investigation into unsafe working conditions.
\n

\n
It proves that companies like Foxconn and Apple, to a point, can be responsive to consumer concerns. As I pointed out last week, while neither Apple nor Foxconn may be particularly noteworthy in a landscape where oppressive working conditions are par for the course, consumers who came to trust Apple’s brand found themselves uncomfortable about having formed a loyalty to a company that they now saw as unethical.
\n
Still, this doesn’t make Foxconn some kind of worker’s paradise. As Gizmodo points out:
\n
“1,800 yuan is about $285, meaning around $10 a day, or less than a dollar per hour.
