NICKNAME(S). Fans would come to call him “Stone Face,” for the lack of emotion in his face, and his odd habit of spacing out. His family and fellow members, mainly his younger sister, would call him “Joongie,” for a cute nickname. Only such close ones have seen his cutest sides, where he would show an abnormally amount of affection, though he reverts back to seeming cold soon after.

PERSONALITY.
Hongjoong is at first a bit intimidating. He holds an almost scary and mysterious aura that can’t seem to leave him alone. He seems standoffish, and without knowing, is socially awkward around strangers. The boy uses formal language often and doesn’t forget his manners around people of not only authority, but managers and staff workers alike. Though he’s particularly hard to befriend at first, to those who achieve a friendship with him, he’s exceedingly faithful to. Hongjoong has difficulty with expressing himself, probably due to his lack of friends in earlier years. Though he struggles with giving advice or comfort, he has a strange way of understanding people and their problems. People say he’s a good listener. To very close friends, his shell that’s let down shows the other side of him which is honestly just one big softie. He loves romance movies and is honestly a misunderstood sweetheart that cant word his feelings. Despite all his awkward and needless to say, uncommunicative traits, he’s a good person at heart and wouldn’t fail to assist someone in need. He’s extremely dedicated to something if he chooses to pursue it, and a hardowrker, too.


BACKGROUND.
Hongjoong has had a passion for singing since his first concert. The show captured all of his attention, even if it was a small and short one. After that, he was mesmerized with singing. His parents let him take up vocal lessons, which he eagerly attended. He worked extremely hard, never seeming to be satisfied with his results. He spent most of his childhood in a studio or practicing alone. No classmates approached him, as they all got the impression that he hated them, when in reality, he just didn't know what to say. In the future he auditioned for several companies, one being SME. Though SME rejected him due to his lack of skills in dance, he was grateful to hear that Bighit had accepted him as a trainee, and took his opportunity humbly as an experience to grow.
His parents are more than supportive of his passion and dream, and allowed him to move away from home at a young age to start his trainee life (even if it was difficult to depart from his younger sister.) Hongjoong graduated from SOPA at 18 after promising his parents he’d at least finish high school education (not that he truly did pay attention.)

Father | Yang Joonyoung | 48 | pharmacist | Sort of close. Hongjoong’s father started to work very far away from home around freshman year. He would work late into the nights and rarely had time for Hongjoong (not that he left his room often.)

Younger sister | Yang Seoryoung | 16 | student | Extremely close. Hongjoong considers Seoryoung to be his best friend, as sad as that may seem. They tell each other everything, and are frequently mistaken for being twins.

HABITS.
• Hongjoong, as stated previously, has a habit of staring off into space at random moments. His attention span is small when the subject isn’t important (to him), and he doesn’t even have a single thought or daydream when he loses himself in a trance.


• The singer also has a habit of covering his mouth when eating. He’s always thought that he looked the ugliest when he ate, and felt insecure about his appearance.


• Biting his lip. Hongjoong gets nervous easily, especially before a stage or performance. He opts for biting his lip as a calming mechanism, which usually leads to peeled and swallowed skin or strangely red lips.


FEARS.
• To Hongjoong, dogs are quite frankly, the devil’s spawn. He doesn’t know why out of all things why it had to be dogs, but the mere thought of them sent him running home. Whenever one is in sight he could only think of possible “what ifs” and how much it would hurt if it but him on the arm or leg.


• Failure is the last thing Hongjoong to experience. Numerous times of getting beaten down and bouncing back up has left Hongjoong with not only helpful lessons from his mistakes but a burning fire of insecurity. He overthinks his performances to the last detail, constantly nitpicking and criticizing himself over and over again which only fuels the fire.


• His next fear would be his passions being taken from him. Singing has been an outlet for him to let out the emotions he fails to express on a daily basis. It’s like his safe haven away from everything else in his life. Losing it would be devastating, which is why Hongjoong constantly drinks water and makes tea to soothe his throat.


• Similar to losing his passion, losing the people he loves the most is a nightmare Hongjoong hopes never comes. The fact that he's unable to express himself scares him, and he’s worried that because of that he’ll be left in the dust.


STRENGTHS.
• Hongjoong’s hardworking personality aids him in his singing career. When he can’t get a note down he practices it until he can. When he stumbles around during a dance routine (which happens more times than you can count) he stays late into the night to get it down.


• Listening. Hongjoong doesn’t say much, and that’s sometimes a good thing for his close ones. He’s a good person to vent to when you have a bad day, and he’s supportive without even having to speak a word.


• Past his personality, Hongjoong has always had a talent with his voice. His tone is soft and soothing, but it’s also powerful and demanding. He hits his notes with precision and strength, and rarely ever fails to do so.


• Writing lyrics in his spare time and producing songs has helped Hongjoong develop a knack for the process. He’s able to quickly write down a song and make music for it soon after.


LIKES.
• Hongjoong loves to watch movies in his spare time. He’s a big fan of romance movies or sad-sob movies, and is often made fun of since he has such a hard outer shell. He doesn’t object to a good horror or comedy movie, though.


• Relating back to movies, reading and literature are absolutely fascinating to Hongjoong. He found no interest in the boring lessons at school, but took great interest in the fantasies and stories a book held. He loves reading, and could find himself lost in a story for hours. He gains a lot of his inspiration for song lyrics from books when he’s run out of inspirational juice.


• Spicy food has a very large spot in Hongjoong’s stomach. No matter what the occasion, breakfast, lunch, or dinner, he’ll eat it.


• To suit his ‘dark’ persona, Hongjoong loves the color black. It’s easy to match with and it’s not too flashy.


• Math was Hongjoong’s favorite subject in school, and the only subject he managed to get As in.


• He loves to play soccer, and used to play with his sister.


DISLIKES.
• Most likely because of how horrible he is at it, Hongjoong isn’t too fond of drawing. He can barely draw a good stick figure without messing up the lines.


• Sweets are not Hongjoong’s favorite. He claims that they’re too unhealthy, despite the fact that his diet used to consist of potato chips and instant ramen.


• Chewing with your mouth open: the biggest pet peeve Hongjoong has. He despises lip smacking, and hates the disgusting sound the action produces.


• Socializing with strangers. He struggles already to start with his friends, it’s even harder to make small talk with someone he doesn’t know.

• Crowded places make Hongjoong feel very stressed out. He starts to lose a bit of his consciousness if it’s overwhelming, and has to link arms with a close friend or companion if it gets too bad. In recent years he’s been getting better at keeping his cool, as he’ll have to face these situations if he debuts.


ROLE MODELS.
• Exo’s Chanyeol is one of his main inspirations to sing.


Chanyeol caught Hongjoong’s eye at the very first EXO concert he attended. He was the main reason he took up the thought of being an idol rather than a normal singer, and still urge him to train today.


• Shawn Mendes is one of his favorite foreign artists

STAGE NAME.
GEM. Hongjoong chose this name because just like a gem, he needs to be refined and shaped to shine just as bright.

STAGE NICKNAME. /
Melting Prince, Hongjoong received this nickname because according to fans, he seemed like a cold ice block at first but is slowly melting. Fans say they can feel his warmth that’s melting away the ice, and his sincerity and love despite his stiff nature.

ON-STAGE PERSONA. /
On-stage, a whole new person seems to inhabit Hongjoong. Rather than his emotionless expressions, he’s full of life, smiling happily when necessary but mainly boldly staring into the camera and making rude smirks. He acts quiet on-camera as well, but manages to make small, short funny remarks that make the members and hosts or fans laugh. In the dorms, he’s often isolated away from everyone else. But if he runs into a member, he’ll continue conversation if the other starts one first.


TRAINEE YEARS.
Hongjoong has been training for three years, meaning he moved to Seoul when he just turned 16.

He produced some songs he posted on soundcloud (as well as some covers of EXO, BTS, and American artists.)

MUTUALS + FRIENDS WITHIN THE INDUSTRY.
Hongjoong is a very distant person and doesn’t make friends if it’s not necessary or if the other person doesn’t show interest first. Due to this behavior, he has zero friends or mutuals within the idol industry.

• Stargazing: this song will describe how watching their idols and role models on stage was like a guiding constellation to the path they wanted. Essentially a song about their inspirations and reason to push so hard for debut.

• Alcoholic: Mainly a rap song depicting how they drown out their worries with ‘alcohol,’ which is practicing as it’s their passion, and how sometimes having too much ‘alchohol’ or overworking yourself, isn’t a good thing.

• Beating Hearts: A song about how all people, no matter who or what they are, all have hearts. Perhaps not metaphorical, but physical, and everyone deserves a chance to be human.

MEMBERS THEY'RE CLOSEST TO IN RDV.
Singularity: Hongjoong finds Singularity to be, just like everyone else finds him, an embarrassing dad. But in a strange way, it’s comforting. Hongjoong is stiff and awkward, but Singularity manages to lighten the mood and take all the pressure Hongjoong has of socializing off his chest. Singularity constantly looks out for him, and their personalities fit together. Opposites attract? They’re proof.

Flower Bomb: Hongjoong somewhat relates to her demure behavior. They were both very stiff around each other, but somehow managed to get more comfortable around each other’s presence. She became louder, and he listened to her every step of their friendship. His small funny remarks always had her screeching with laughter. They would be close for relating to each other’s more reserved personalities. Whereas Flower Bomb isn’t as intimidating, though, she was kind enough to make effort to befriend Hongjoong.

WHY DO YOU DESERVE TO DEBUT? |
My training period has been hard, there’s no doubt about that, but it’s also been rewarding. I’ve grown so much over these past years. My vocals have improved to the point where they’re steady and powerful, and my dance moves have sharpened to the point that they are far better than they used to be. I deserve a debut because of my hard work and determination. I will constantly strive to improve, debut or not. My passion fuels me to continue and face the trials I may come across. I also have a strong stage presence, and an aura that many take notice of. Overall, I’m a strong candidate for debut.

WHO WOULD YOU LIKE TO BE IN A SUBUNIT WITH? |
A subunit with Fanxy Child and Flower Blossom. I admire Fanxy Child’s style and stage presence, along with his clear leadership skills. Meanwhile Flower Blossom has a softer and sweeter image. I think that as a group, we’d be able to show strong individuality. But along with that, we have strong rappers paired with my voice, which I’m confident will sound great together. We have chemistry, and the correct set of skills to group up.
