  38. Prologue:
  39. >Korra's Birth: Year 0
  40. >LOK Finale: 21
  41. >Korra Disappears: 58
  42. >Korra Dies, Earth Avatar Born: 80
  43. >Earth Avatar Series Begins: 96
  44.
  45. Background:
  46. >'80s-style time period
  47. >Cold war between United Earth Republic and Fire Nation, who are competing in colonization of the Spirit World
  48. >Northern Water Tribe is allied with FN, giving them access to the northern portal
  49. >Southern Water Tribe is allied with UER, giving them access to the southern portal
  50. >Air Temples and United Republic are neutral, and the central portal is highly sought after by both sides
  51. >UER is formed of Ba Sing Se and a few other Earth Republic states
  52. >The remaining states are independent, with a number of them alligned with FN
  53. >The independent states vary in their political systems, raning from tribes to theocracy to aristocracy, etc.
  54. >Both sides squabbling for power, trying to gain more Earth territory. It's unclear who would win if a full blown conflict emerged. In a late-CW scenario when the avatar appears
  55. >Suddenly the most valuable chip is in the game
  56. >If either side has the Avatar, it means that the indecisive states would probably side with them, giving them an edge in the conflict
  57. >Several states of the former EK + FN + SWT as NATO, while UER + NWT as Warsaw Pact
  58. >Spirit weapons on both sides
  59. >Quality of life continually dimishes as more and more resources are diverted for warfare
  60. >Fire Lord has just died, and his son is about to be coronated
  61.
  62. Book 1:
  63. >Introduce Shen and Bayar.
  64. >FN spies in the neutral Si Wong Desert region find out about Shen.
  65. >Kimiko (with Poi in tow) under Vachir's orders comes to recruit Shen (with Bayar in tow).
  66. >Taxman gets wind of the Avatar's possible return and starts his persuit.
  67. >Shen, Bayar, Kim and Poi return to the FN, where Vachir tells them to go find an Airbending teacher while Shen trains in Firebending.
  68. >World-building as they travel from Air Temple to Air Temple, crossing through several Earth States along the way, occasionally taking on assignments from the FN.
  69. >As they travel, Shen and Kimiko begin to reevaluate their world views; Shen's firebending grows stronger as he begins to care about his mission, and Kim's firebending gets weaker as she begins to lose faith in her's.
  70. >Shen finally masters firebending when he uses it to defend a (FN-alligned) Earth State citizen whom he previous did not care about.
  71. >The Eastern Temple seems promising at first, and Shen is noticably affected by the unconditional kindness that Ikki and her followers show him. However, Shen's presence causes it to be attacked by goons that Taxman hired, and Ikki's family is hurt. Shen & co. realize that they can't stay at any of the Temples, and have to find a teacher than can travel with them.
  72. >The Southern and Eastern Air Temples have no teachers that Rohan and Jinora are willing to let travel.
  73. >On route to the Northern Air Temple, Taxman hires Mud to attack Shen, triggering the Avatar State to prove Shen is the Avatar. It's a pretty close fight, but Mud loses.
  74. >Taxman makes a last-ditch effort to trigger Shen's Avatar State by attacking Bayar.
  75. >It works, but in the worst possible way for Taxman. Bayar is also noticably shaken by Shen's display of merciless power.
  76. >As Shen returns to normal, he meets Korra for the first time.
  77.
  78. Book 2:
  79. >The world learns of the Avatar's return, and the "Suicide Squad" (placeholder name) is sent by the UER to capture him.
  80. >Shen immediately starts butting heads with Korra. She attempts to act as his conscience, but he holds her in low regard because the Avatar never helped his people, and (unlike him) she grew up with lots of support, never fearing starvation or fighting to survive.
  81. >Shen begins to go out and fight people in his sleep. He can't figure out why.
  82. >They get to the Northern Air Temple, but again there are no teacher willing to travel with them, especially after the incident at the Western Temple.
  83. >A rebellious airbender kid named Wang stows away with them when they leave the Air Temple
  84. >After some squabbling about him coming with them at all, he offers to be Shen's teacher
  85. >Team Avatar start training, but realize the SS is after them and need to keep moving
  86. >Shen struggles to master airbending as his personal attachments to his people hold him back, while Poi learns to be more open and free about her feelings.
  87. >The FN arms the Sandbenders with experimental spirit powers in the hopes that they'll attack the UER, but do to some disagreements these now super-dangerous Sandbenders attempt to do some conquering of their own.
  88. >Shen in called in to deal with the situation, but at the worst possible moment he has one of his "sleep fighting" moments while still awake. He pushes the conflict past the possibility of a peaceful resolution, and when he regains control he is forced to use violence against the Sandbenders, disgusting Bayar. The fact that the Fire Nation created this situation in the first place shakes Kim's faith in the FN.
  89. >Bayar decides to leave Shen and return to his home village - He declares that Shen is no longer his brother.
  90. >Shen is finally able to master Airbending by putting aside his attachments, but now Wang feels useless.
  91. >Wang sells Shen out to the SS.
  92. >The SS finally succeeds in capturing Shen, who gets thrown in a Dai Li prison to prep for brainwashing.
  93.
  94. Book 3:
  95. >Vachir gets the news that the Avatar has been captured by UER, and in panic sends troops to attack and rescue the Avatar.
  96. >Shen's brainwashing process begins, and he has visions.
  97. >Wang has a change of heart rescues Poi and Kim, and the three of them rescue Shen.
  98. >Vachir returns to the FN after finding out Team Avatar is no longer there. The Fire Lord is not happy.
  99. >The UER sends their experimental human weapon, the Soundbender, after Shen.
  100. >Shen trains in waterbending, mastering it quickly due to his newfound receptiveness to change. The group has a few close calls with the Soundbender during this time, and decide to hide out in the Spirit World.
  101. >In the Spirit World, they run into Sedna, who helps Shen realize that his "sleep-fighting" is being cause by Vaatu fighting from within.
  102. >Meanwhile, Bayar struggles with leading the Sandbenders and comes to sympathize with Shen's struggles.
  103. >Vachir's attack causes tensions to rise between FN and UER. Growing even more paranoid that the UER will strike against the FN, Vachir reluctantly imprisons the Fire Lord and claims that he has died, taking control of the FN for himself.
  104. >Bayar returns to the team and makes peace with his brother.
  105. >Nobody trusts Wang anymore. Maybe he makes a heroic sacrifice.
  106. >Vachir intentionally frees the Soundbender from her "leash", and (as he anticipated) she makes a beeline for Ba Sing Se to kill her former masters.
  107. >Shen & co. learn about Vachir's plans, so Shen head off to fight and stop the Soundbender while Kim & the others go to bust out the Fire Lord.
  108. >The fight between Shen and Soundbender is broadcast live, horrifying the public and turning them away from war.
  109. >The Soundbender smashes a spirit weapon into Shen, which detonates it, and then leaves Shen for dead.
  110. >This blast of spirit energy has shifted the balance of the two spirits within Shen. We get a debate inside Shen's mind with his spirit, Vaatu, and Raava's. During this conversation, Shen realizes that he needs to stop trying to fight Vaatu and instead accept him, fusing Raava and Vaatu together. This gives him the power boost he needs to defeat the Soundbender.
  111. >Kim defeats Vachir, but doesn't kill him.
  112. >Rather than killing her, Shen offers her mercy, and convinces her to let her anger go.
  113. >At some point, Taxman has a near-death experience and re-evaluates the legacy he is leaving behind. He decides he'd rather be known for peace than war.
  114. >Vachir attacks Shen. Shen kicks on his "Double Avatar State" and, rather than attacking back, just stands there and takes all the heat like it was nothing. Vachir pushes his stream of flames even more and more intense, even as they begin to engulf his arms, until the entire area becomes cloaked in fire and smoke. Eventually, it clears and we see Shen calmy re-emerge from the DAS, and he looks disappointledly at the empty, flaming crater.
  115. >War averted, Shen bears witness to the signing of a peace treaty between the FN and UER.
  116. >HAPPY END
  117.

  119.
  120. Protagonists:
  121.
  122. Shen, 16
  123. >Sandbending Avatar
  124. >Shen embodies neutral jing, he reacts to his surroundings rarely taking a proactive roll, this isn't to say he doesn't care. he loves his brother and tribe deeply, he is very observant and he sees things for what they are being able to see the beauty in Azusa, he hates to see outcasts and those of low stations oppressed and jerked around and seeing these things are one of the few things that will motivate him. Shen's problems expressing himself and the blase way he accepts every thing can lead to people amusing hes stoic at best and "odd" at worse. This allows for instances where he is comically serious, when weird or odd occurrences happen and shen reacts as if he was unphased and the occurrence was completely normal . This also gives Shen opportunities to snark at the situations he finds himself in. When Shen is pushed to extreme emotions it can be hard to bring him out of it. he can hold a grudge and be very hesitant to let it go.
  125. >If a girl does show romantic interest in him , its not that he wont understand their feelings he just won't know how to express him self the correct way, this is partly because of his personality, partly because the Shamans of the Sandbender tribes arrange all the couplings amongst there young people.
  126. >This has negative traits how ever. Its why he doesn't bother to learn more information nor examine the firenation's offer for aid, its why he assumes they are int he right by simply being allied with him. Its why he lacks the drive to fire bend properly in the beginning
  127. >Shen's character development shows a change in this, carrying about more people, his ability to observe expressing its self as empathy. this is part of what leads to Shen and Bayar's split, Shen in the beginning lets the bigger personalities (Bayar and Kimiko) make the decisions and lead the group. As Shen grows as avatar he takes more charge of the group growing out of his brothers shadow. Nether of them really know how to handle it.
  128. >A lifetime of poor treatment has left Shen with a strong sense of empathy and compassion for the downtrodden, but also a reluctance to reach out. He has a wall that prevents him from applying his empathy to people more well-off than he is, as he simply cannot see their problems as real problems. He feels as if the world at large has handed him nothing but lemons, and so he’s in no rush to give back to it. He is extremely attached to Bayar and his village, but is very hesistant to form new attachments. He’s lost too many loved ones to risk dealing with the pain of losing one again. At least initially, he views Bayar as the ideal of what a person should be, and tries to mold himself in that image. But unlike Bayar, Shen’s beliefs are not set in stone, and can (slowly) change.
  129. >Creates sand from earth by separating particles and then putting them back together to make simple constructs for increased .
  130. >An idea for how the sandbending would work: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T0R3043dneA
  131. >The kung fu style we propose it be based on, Ping Kuen: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WtssMhSCs9o#t=62
  132.
  133. Bayar, 21
  134. >Avatar's brother
  135. >Bayar is a very proud man, and will sing the praises of himself and Sandbender culture while harshly refuting any nay-saying about either. He’s used to fighting for his life, and a consequence of this is a need to puff himself up and hide any sign of weakness. Years of being on top was recently shaken by his brother’s Avatardom, and this loss has created a new fear in him: He doesn’t like change or surprises and craves any form of stasis/constance/order, such as his relationship with Shen. He’s terrified of losing that and will act very hostile towards anything he percieves as a threat to that relationship. He will quickly do anything he can to feel more in control.
  136. >Bayar has some feelings of envy towards Shen, but is aware of these feelings and tries to fight against them. He is also very reverant of spirits, but knows little about them.
  137. >A master Sandbender, Bayar does more than hit and block with sand - He can grapple with it.
  138.
  139. Kimiko, 19
  140. >Rich, noble firebender
  141. >A sophisticate with a superiority complex, she sets out on a mission to locate the Avatar and convince him to ally with the FN
  142. >At first she sees Shen as a dirty, uncouth tool, but slowly starts to respect him and feel guilt over manipulating him
  143. >Finds Bayar brutish and gross, but tries to be professional about it, but Bayar pushes her too far sometimes
  144. >Loves Poi like a sister, but kind of takes her emotional support for granted and doesn't quite realize how much she is dependent on Poi. Enjoys Poi's company because, unlike the rest of her social circle, she doesn't get involved in squabbles over the social pecking order and doesn't force Kim to be something she's not
  145. >Ashamed that she can't lightningbend
  146. >Uses small, efficient bursts of flame rather than big fireballs, longfist style: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bHUq4yGgg94
  147.
  148. Poi, 16
  149. >Waterbender handmaiden of Kimiko
  150. >The daughter of hired servants from the volcanic islands surrounding the FN, she was born into Kimiko's household, where she grew alongside Kimiko as a sister, and now she is a happy-go-lucky and loyal friend of Kimiko
  151. >Most people were jerks to her when growing up, on account of her lower status
  152. >Kimiko and her grew to be very close friends, almost sisters, as thus she is very defensive of Kimiko
  153. >She's also desperate for affection and terrified at the thought of someone not liking her
  154. >Values Kim's happiness to the point that she is willing to sacrifice her expession of negative feelings to avoid bringing her down
  155. >Finds Sandbender culture fascinating, and is very curious about Shen and Bayar
  156. >Uses a much less flowy form of waterbending based on Kiwi Hakka and Samoan Siva Tau, with lots of crashing waves. Her Earth-like Waterbending contrasts with Shen's Water-like Earthbending: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZDjy4Js-cTk
  157.
  158.
  159. Wang, 14
  160. >Airbending runaway
  161. >Wang wants to be hardcore, but his temple won't let him
  162. >Growing up in an Air Temple where everyone looked and acted exactly the same has given him a powerful urge to stand out. He craves attention and wants to be seen as unique and special.
  163. >Is very proud of his power, and doesn't take blows to his ego well
  164. >Uses Airbending to enhance fighting and his moves rather than using it in blasts, letting him do crazy movements like having punches turn into tornadoes, and moving faster than normal by thinning the air around his limbs
  165. >His martial arts is a mixture of Baguazhang and breakdancing, focusing on spiral movements from both types of physical arts: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MDawG_4nTjE
  166. >Breakdancing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RMBb-VvJShY
  167.
  168. Asuza
  169. >Rhino beetle
  170. >Shen's best friend, whom he rescued from a life of pit-fighting
  171. >She's virtually indestructible and can fly, but tires somewhat easily
  172.
  173. Korra's Spirit
  174. >Speaks to Shen
  175. >Her advice is usually about facilitating agreements and non-aggression, showing how she grew from where she started
  176. >Doesn't talk about her disappearance
  177. >Shen just ignores or argues with her for the most part
  178.
  179. -----
  180.
  181. Antagonists:
  182.
  183. "Taxman"
  184. >While at the outpost in the middle of jackshit nowhere, Taxman files through his colleagues paperwork because he gets shit on all the time for being a zealous patriot to the UER military despite being an ex-taxman.
  185. >Uses his dedication and frustration with being stepped on to fuel his search for Shen, which is considered a wild goose chase and a bit of a joke by his colleagues, who sent him off to spy on Kim as a bit of a joke.
  186. >As the season progresses and he becomes more dedicated, he takes on more of a clean and straight appearance and begins to look somewhat like Hans Landa.
  187.
  188. Vachir
  189. >A firebending General in the Fire Nation military, he is a FN zealot, is obsessed with FN history and is a collector of FN antiques.
  190. >Fear and paranoia of the UER motivates him to take drastic measures to ensure the survival of the FN.
  191. >He is from a FN allied Earth state, and his particular home state used to be a former state of the UER, before rebellions led them to independence.
  192. >He is very close to the Prince, and is fearful of outsiders corrupting him.
  193.
  194. "Suicide Squad" (placeholder name)
  195. >A group of skilled non-benders hired by the UER to capture the Avatar.
  196. >Captain - A rugged, cantankerous, old ex-sea-captain, who stinks of fish and booze. She is a master tactician and highly skilled with a boomerang.
  197. >Rhino - A juggernaut of a man who uses pure brute force to bring down his target.
  198. >Snake - A charming chi-blocker who uses his skills of acrobatics and stealth.
  199. >Eagle - A Yuyan archer, she functions as the marksman of the team.
  200.
  201. Mud
  202. >A powerful earthbender who specialises in crystalbending.
  203. >He is a vain attention whore. When he meets the Avatar, he becomes obsessed with fighting him to prove his position as the most powerful earthbender on the planet.
  204. >His name is ironic, AVATAH! Because mud is soft but he is HAAARRRRD!
  205.
  206. Sura
  207. >An eerie, silent, half machine/half human airbender who's bending has been augmented so that it can interfere with elements actively (countering and manipulating bending used on it). A "super-soldier" developed by the UER in conjuction with Future Industries, the Soundbender's inner machinations are an enigma.
  208. >Her movements make mechanical noises, breaths oddly, wears a creepy metallic mask.
  209. >Is forced to serve the UER via an explosive collar.
  210. >Her vibrations sound like '80s synth pop.
  211. >Her gender is a mystery until her masked is knocked off by Shen.
  212.
  213. -----
  214.
  215. Other:
  216. >Meelo, Jinora, Ikki and Rohan are the only ones still alive from LoK
  217. >They each lead one of the four air temples
  218. >Meelo leads a militaristic branch (Northern), with airbending ninjas who utilize soundbending
  219. >Jinora leads a spiritual branch (Eastern), with a focus on reaching enlightenment
  220. >Ikki leads a humanistic branch (Western), with a focus on charitable works
  221. >Rohan is a non-bender who leads an academic branch (Southern), which focuses on education on the history of the Air Nomads, among other things
  222.
  223. Kaizo, 16
  224. >The Fire Prince, and later Fire Lord
  225. >Prefers adventure over the stuffy life of royalty
  226. >Major controversy exists in regards to having someone so young in charge of such a dangerous situation, but a cultural movement spearheaded by Vachir tries to paint these people as UER-supporters
  227.
  228. Sedna
  229. >A woman raised by spirits in the spirit world
  230. >She gets along with even the most hostile spirits, and they gladly help her
  231. >Teaches Shen some stuff about getting along with Spirits
  232.
  233. -----
  234.
  235. Characters that need to be expanded:
  236. Sufyan
  237. >A girl from a Sandbender Tribe that is in opposition to Shen's Tribe.
  238. >On a pilgrimage of some sort
  239. >Possible love interest for Shen
  240. >She uses a knife, and is extremely skilled with it. The knife is important to her, she carries spare handles, and memorized the pattern and design for the knife, recreating it anytime it's lost. There is a lot of spirituality tied to it, and the knife plays an important part of their culture, from weaponry to carving. She could do things like throw the knife, and if it misses (instead of rattling off of whatever it hits) she just kind of bends it back into the earth, and bends a 'new' knife back out of the ground, so it's like the same knife just coming back to her. The idea is that they only bend this one thing, but ais goddamn unreal at bending that one thing.
  241.
  242. Mari Lu
  243. >Girl from the swamps
  244. >Waterbender, especially good with plantbending
  245.
  246. -----
  247.
  248. On Sandbender Tribes:
  249. Sandbenders are the product of their environment, seemingly selfish, greedy and thieves. the Value survival above all things, having learn to make do with less, Sandbenders are experts at putting every thing to use, what some might see as junk becomes vital necessities to a sandbender. Sandbenders horde water and supplies form rival tribes and in harsh seasons ether from other members of their own tribe. Despite what other members of the earth king believe not all Sand benders are thieves, some tribes choosing to cultivate cattle, or work as merchants, in the years after the 100 year war one tribe has even been known to work as tour guides, leading rich earth kingdom tourists on safari. The Stereotype that Sandbenders are raiders and thieves are well founded however, Several Tribes Exist solely on taking the belongings of travelers and other sandbender tribes, Freely taking water, cattle, valuables, and in some cases even people as ransom or slaves. even in Tribes that officially disdain from this dirty work, members looking to increase their own fortune will indulge in this banditry
  250. Sandbenders are very spiritual, Believing all of Si Wong desert is the mortal coil for a Great spirit who protects and punishes them accordingly. many Shamans and spiritualists walk straight out into the desert wearing nothing. if they can survive for 3 days they know the great spirit watches over them. Individual Tribes also pay tribute to individual spirits like totems for example a Tribe favoring Wisdom would pay tribute to Wan Shi Tong and venerate owls.
  251. Sandbenders have a seemingly old world view on gender. Women generally aren't fighters, and rarely do the venture from the Sandbender communes, Outsiders mistake this as a misogynist society. this is a false assumption as in Sandbender communities Women hold most the power all Shamans and Village leaders are women, and their secrets are guarded closely, the secrets of sandbending belong to them, and it is they who teach the younger generations the lore of the spirits, the customs of the people and the secret to controlling the sands. one of the few rules sandbenders Exercise is when conducting raids on other Tribes is to never attack the shamans and Chieftains, doing so would allow them to fight back, the sight of a fully trained shaman or chieftain sandbending has been compared to a howling Sandstorm.
  252. Sandbending resembles water bending and airbending because of the fluid nature of the rock but their is more to it then that, to truly master sand one must master their concentration. a master sand bender learns to feel ever sand grand as he bends it. Despite its similarity to other bending arts the idea of neutral jing, is stil lvery much present in sandbending, because sand flows so freely a sandbender learns fell how the sand will flow and bend it in the way he desires.
  253. Are The Sandbender tribes part of the Earth Kingdom? On the one hand they are earth benders, they live with in the earth Kingdoms border, and they do use Earth kingdom currency (amongst other things). However They Do not pay taxes, they do not respect the authority of the Earth kingdoms ruling body. the thing that probably gives a best answer to this is that Man Sandbenders hate the Earth kingdom and its rulers, and the Feeling is shared by the denizens of the Earth kingdom. There have been attempts on both sides to mend this but they always end in failure. Because of the scattered and tribal nature of Sandbenders and the vastness of the desert they cannon be conquered as a people. This also means the Sandbenders cannot unite to decide a common coarse for their people. Not helping this are the Sandbenders perceived nature as thieves and killers, and the the tribes to willing to live up to this stereotype. Because the Sandbender Shaman pass down all their tales orally, the Sandbenders remember every slight the Earth kingdom has inflicted upon their people. There are many tales of Criminals, Refuges and Political enemies exiled into the desert as punishment, to be adopted by or even become whole sandbender Tribes.
  254. Many stories of aid sought for Plague disease and famine being met with apathy and violence persist even into the current age.

  258. On the Spirit World:
  259. The spirit world is vast and mysterious, Many of its denizens being older then all of recorded human history. The Spirits range in all shapes and sizes and levels of intelligence. Some spirits are just beings going about their daily lives, while others gain and power and influence amongst the physical world. The oldest and most powerful spirits, are vital to both the Spiritual and Physical worlds prolonged existence. These Spirits embody the fundamental parts of life, the ocean, the moon, the sun and so forth.
  260. The mind of a spirit is a inherently different thing, Long lives mean long memories, they can be narrow minded in what they view as important, becoming violent when any thing disrupts there routine. Many spirits look down humanity for their short lives, and their lack of cosmic awareness. But at the same time Many spirits are curious about humanity and the human world. Since the spirit portals have opened many spirits have taken up permanent resident in the human world, some living along side humans more directly. The Mayor of Oasis City is a spirit of chance, with a neurotic love for gambling.
  261. In the time since Korra disappeared into the spirit world, Humanity has ventured into he Spirit world, finding it an almost Infinite land for them to exploit. Future industries and Varrick Global Industries have stations constructed in the spirit world, for the sake of research and harnessing the raw powers held there. A Both these Corporations have stake in an independent colony that was founded 20 years ago, by a sect of spiritualists who wished to further their understanding of the hidden world.
  262. These exploits have not gone without there repercussion how ever, many beings who call the spirit world their home view these trespassers, as greedy monkeys who disturb the natural order, and this resentment has cause more then a few spirits to become dark and attack these human settlements.
  263. These concerns are well-founded, especially when a Scientist at Future industries after researching the effects the moon spirits death had at the Siege of the north pole realized, that if you control a Celestial Spirit, a Spirit who embodies facet of the physical world, you control that spirit's territory. This revelation immediately caught the eyes of those who wished to have an edge in the current conflict of the physical world.

  267. On Vaatu:
  268. Vatuu is a being of Chaos and Darkness, but because of the way he chose to bring about the concepts he embodied he is seen as evil. He is kind of a dick, after all. But from a cosmic world view, he is doing what he is meant to do. Too much order is stasis, nothing new can grow or be realized, from chaos comes new ideas, new life to be created and utilized. The dark is scary but creatures exist that can only function and survive in the dark, these beings are not evil. In Vaatu's shown existence only one individual has ever approached him believing that he was not an inherently evil force, and that person wanted to use him for his own gain. But even in opposing him Vaatu's nature has been reinforced by creating change where once their was stasis. By unifying Vaatu and Raava truly, a real balance in the world can be realized.
