  5. - Egg cycle count starts at 20, regardless of what baby Pokemon it contains
  6. - Step counter cycles repeatedly from 0-255, starting from 0 on a new game
  7. - Egg cycle count decrements by 1 every 256 steps, but with one idiosyncrasy: it actually decrements every time it hits 128
  8. - This means that if the step counter is at 127 when the egg is obtained, its cycle count will immediately decrement from 20 to 19 upon the first step taken
  9. - This "quick cycle" is bad for the route, as the 20 egg cycles are just enough to reach the Radio Tower double deposit; 19 causes it to hatch early, late in the hideout
  10. - Thus, it's important to ensure that the step counter has just crossed 128 before talking to Oak's aide
  11. - Step count quirks:
  12. > Stepping in front of a live trainer ("!" icon) does not increment the counter
  13. > A step producing an encounter does increment the counter
  14. > A step into a door does not increment the counter
  15. > Stepping outside facing down does increment the counter
  16. > Escape Rope increments the counter
  17. > Stepping into any kind of cutscene or forced dialogue (including phone calls) does not increment the counter
  18. - Default step counter at Aide (Cruize route): 127
  19. > Talked to Ken
  20. > Walked left to Blue's sister
  21. > Got pre- and post-hills Potions
  22. > Walk in front of Lass Victoria
  23. > Talked to Hugo
  24. > Talked to Colette
  25. > Kurt -> Mart
  26. > Dodged Grace and took extra 2 steps to dodge below
  27. > Talked to Ping
  28. > Dodged Jeffrey
  29. > Talked to Neal
  30. > Dodged Li
  31. > Talked to Rod
  32. - Step variations:
  33. > Talk to Lass Victoria: +3
  34. > Hit by Grace: -3
  35. > Hit by Jeffrey: -1
  36. > Walk in front of Neal: -3
  37. > Hit by Li: -1
  38. - Grace variation accounts for taking the optimal path below her after being hit
  39.  
  40. - Solutions:
  41. > Only 1 extra step is required
  42. > Assuming you don't get Hoothoot before Victoria, talking to her is optimal anyway, as walking through the grass allows for a chance for Hoothoot
  43. > The only places that a single extra step can be taken is exiting Kurt's house (both times) and exiting the mart
  44. > Worst case scenario (didn't talk to Victoria or Neal, hit every spinner) is 119 steps at the Aide; in this case, at Aide, walk 5 steps right (to the dividing wall), then back to him before getting the egg
