  3. Matthew was normally such a calm child, a blessing that Autumn had done her best not to take for granted. But he was hardly six months old and this week was proving to be rough. "I know, Mattie, I know," she murmured, pacing the bedroom and drumming her fingers lightly against his back. He'd developed a low fever over the course of the evening, and Autumn could only hope that the Tylenol kicked in soon - it was the middle of the night, but she could bring him to his pediatrician the first thing in the morning.

  5. Humming a lullaby under her breath, she took another lap around the room. While being a single mother was difficult, she wouldn't trade Matthew for anything in the world. Hopefully soon she would be able to start making more money, move out of the one-bedroom apartment with walls so thin she could practically hear her neighbors' breathe. Unfortunately, that meant they could hear her.

  7. Wincing when she heard a knocking on the door, she shifted Matthew's weight to one arm as she went to open it. A noise complaint was the last thing she needed, but it seemed nothing she did was helping soothe his cries.

  9. "I'm sorry, I just can't get him to stop crying," she rambled as she opened the door, hardly sparing a glance to her neighbor as she pressed her lips to the crown of Matthew's head, doing her best to stave off her headache. "I gave him some medicine a bit ago, it should kick in soon. He's got a fever and won't stop crying." Autumn was near tears herself, hair in a messy bun and exhaustion evident in her face.
