  1. Kesagake was a man-eater, one who knew how to attack from the shadows, how to break his prey's ability to fight back, and would not let so much as a bone slip free of his jaws. But he was no killer, no predator. That was an instinct that had never come naturally to him, nor had he ever practiced.

  5. There would be no great bite to the skull, ending it all with a crunch. There was no bite to the throat either, whether to throttle him or letting him slip away with blood-loss. Instead, Kesagake just ate him piece by piece, nosing his great muzzle further and further into his guts with each bite he took. Sometimes his teeth would fall on bone, making match-stick cracks between his teeth, and sometimes on popping flesh; it made no difference to Kesagake as he picked him apart.

  7. Still, Kenny fought back desperately, admirably for a human. Much as he could, at any rate, flailing his hands desperately at Kesagake's ears and head with balled fists. Something useless and not even worthy of the bear's attention; everyone struggled to survive, so why make a fuss of it? But there was one tiny detail in Kenny's fists, barely visible in the red splatter of the frenzy. A hint of glitter on his fingers, from touching Calamity's thighs.
