  1. Idris slumped on the fluffy mattress. She wasn't used to fluffy, and she wasn't in the mood to be pleasantly surprised by it. Straw was familiar.
  2. “- and if you have any problems, don't hesitate to come to me.” Idris hadn't been listening to Mrs Honeydew, a halfling with a cheerful face and a voice that made her bigger than most humans.
  3. “Okay.” She answered in what little Common she knew. She felt sorry in hindsight about ignoring the woman. She clearly didn't have much of a grasp of Giant, but had made an effort. “Thanks.” She offered in apology.
  4. “You'll get used to it-” She hesitated as she forgot the Giant word for 'here', “in this place.”
  5. Idris nodded, and Mrs Honeydew politely began to close the door, before suddenly dominating the doorframe again, “I almost forgot! Your room-mate is a lovely young lady named Kilik. She'll be along once classes are over. I'm sure you'll get on like a house on fire.”
  6. On her own at last, Idris looked through her meagre pack. She hadn't had much to bring. Another dress and her pan-flute. Laid on the bed was the school uniform she'd been provided with; a white button-up shirt, and matching blue blazer and skirt. To pass the time she folded the clothes and put them with the pan-flute in the square chest beside her bed.
  7. She picked up the parchment she'd been given detailing her timetable. Irritatingly, it was written in common, but she vaguely remembered what the lessons were. She had half-heartedly contributed to the discussion with Mrs Holden about which elective classes she would be taking and which classes she was obliged to take. Her classes were beginning tomorrow, so she scrutinised the entry for Thursday. She had Common As A Second Language first. Mrs Holden had assured her she'd be right at home, because everyone in that class would be like her. She had meant well, but humans rarely realised how stupid they were.
  8. She had Draconic after that, then Swordplay, which was an optional. All of the Academy's students were expected to learn to defend themselves, and she hadn't like the sound of fighting with a staff. The next box of time was the easiest to translate, because it was empty; a free period.
  9. It struck her that she had no idea how she would use the time.
  10. “Knock knock,” Came a voice from the door, speaking in chirpy, raspy Giant. Idris turned her attention to the doorway, and then swivelled her gaze down a few feet to where the head of her room-mate turned out to be. Kilik was a kobold, with a narrow head and white scales.
  11. “You speak Giant?” Idris asked in her native tongue.
  12. “Only about twenty words.” Kilik admitted in Common, then in grinding Giant, “My name is Kilik.”
  13. “My name is Idris.” She returned in Common.
  14. Kilik sat down on her bed across from Idris, which took some effort due to it being half as tall as her, “I was in the same position as you last year.” Mid-year transfers usually meant the same thing; your parents were killed by adventurers recently, and some scouts had found you.
  15. “I don't think I like it here.” Idris confided.
  16. “It beats the Hell out of the alternative.” Seeing Idris confused at the word, “Out of being out there in the world.”
  17. Idris nodded vaguely. She wasn't sure she agreed, but somewhere inside she knew that was just the sadness talking. A free scholarship at the Val'Rance Academy for Young Ladies wasn't to be sniffed at.
  18. “I mean, I lost my first home. I didn't like it here at first either. But then it started feeling like home. It's a place you can belong. There aren't many of those. Do you know what I mean?”
  19. Idris shook her head. “What does 'belong' mean?”
  20. “Uhm...” Kilik put a claw to her teeth and tapped as she thought, “Belonging, like, when you feel that you're in a place where you're supposed to be.”
  21. Idris nodded slowly. That, she thought, would be another feather in her cap in Common class.
