- As with other infinitive phrases, we use a “for” phrase if the subject is different:
- She’s too serious to have fun. = She’s very serious, and as a result she can’t have fun.
- She’s too serious for us to have fun. = She’s very serious, and as a result we can’t have fun.
- ---
- We can also use just the for phrase:
- You’re too smart for your own good.
- ---
- Intensifiers with “too”:
- That’s much too expensive. / far too expensive / (informal) way too expensive
- That’s a little too expensive. / a bit too expensive / slightly too expensive / (informal) a tad too expensive
- p. 132 exercise 7 - Take turns telling your partner about things you don’t like, and why (try to use “too” and an intensifier to explain your reasons).
- ---
- We can only say “far too many” or “way too many”, not “much too many”.
- We can say “a few too many”, not “a little too many”.
- ---
- We can “soften” statements with “not” and an intensifier:
- This food is terrible. -> This food isn’t so good.
- I hate homework. -> I don’t like homework very much.
- I’m great. -> I’m not too bad.
- Nothing. -> Not too much.
- ---
- Degree complements with “too” and “enough”.
- She’s too young to vote. = She’s not old enough to vote. = She can’t vote because of her age.
- She’s not too young to vote. = She’s old enough to vote. = She can vote.
- - “enough” goes after adjectives, adverbs, and verbs, but (usually) before nouns
- ---
