If u're talking about the unevenness of the grain in some scenes (which I assume to be few of the darker ones), that's mostly caused by the source having it uneven to begin with (more temporal noise away from the lines and more static grain near the lines, as well as frames with more pronounced grain than others with less grain)

In fact, if u were to actually compare the source with my av1 encode and the hevc encodes by watching them u would notice that the hevc encodes are way worse with non-uniform noise and huge random spikes of grain in certain areas of the image or in different frames. (does hevc need more developtment then?)

For example, still considering that there is a big comparison posted at the top of this description that should already show the quality of grain in both AV1 and HEVC, and that making an actual "watching comparison" would be way better (which means comparing the videos by watching and not looking at single frames, especially when comparing grain), I suggest u to give a look at this specific comparison: https://slow.pics/c/dGZYvCPz

Here u can notice that hevc is able to reproduce a similar quality of grain only at double the size of the av1 encode (that "grainretention" 9.7GB encode is not available publicy as I did it for myself forcing grain retention on hevc for a more complete visual comparison as the only hevc releases that were able to preserve the grain without horrible artifacts were way bigger than 10GB; VCB's hevc encode instead is **terrible** because of the denoising filter and every other hevc release is simply full of artifacts all over the grain as they didnt use the correct settings to preserve grain, or simply didnt have enough bitrate)

If u're referring to something else regarding grain that is actually worse on av1 than the hevc encodes at comparable sizes, I would like the specific scenes to be pointed at, instead of mentioning something very specific in a very general and generic way: u say that "some frames(? that's very specific) have unnatural grain pattern" and then point directly to "av1 needs more development" (which is way too generic) and just leave like that without even making a single example
  15. What if I did something that could actually be done better? I would like to improve that honestly.
  16. What if your findings could actually help in developing av1 *even* further? Many ppl work completely **for free** to keep developing a great codec like av1 and they constantly listen to our constructive criticism and to our requests to improve specific shortcomings of the codec
  17. In the end, generically addressing things without specifically stating them or at least making a single specific example is just empty and pointless talk tbh, as well as harmful to the people who may end up missing on a good release because of your comment :/
